Asatru seems to come up on these boards much more frequently than I might have imagined.

So who out there, of the 500 or so people who participate on the boards, considers themself Asatru?

From those I'm aware of here, (5 including me), we are at 1% of the population, which is pretty high by comparison to the general population I'd say; 1% of the UK population would be 600,000 Asatruar for instance, which would rank us larger than quite a few recognised religions.

That to all appearances, we arent 600,000 in the UK, indicates that the CM boards are over represented with regard to Asatru; is there any reason for this?

I was raised in a druid household that held the old Norse gods and goddesses in reverence. So i am of the (my family being believers dedicated to Our Lady of the Beasts as far back as memory and tales go) older form of Asatru.

The precepts of both being closely linked.

The virtue of Honor requires one to adhere to their oaths and do the right thing, even if it will ultimately hurt others or oneself in the process.

A Druid is obligated to remain true to friends, family and leaders thus exhibiting the virtue of Loyalty.

Hospitality demands that a Druid be a good host when guests are under one's roof.

Honesty insists that one tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth to yourself, your gods and your people.

Justice desires the Druid understands everyone has an inherent worth and that an assault to that worth demands recompense in one form or another.

Courage for the Druid does not always wear a public face; it is standing-strong-in-the-face-of-adversity, alone or with companions. Sometimes Courage is getting up and going about a daily routine when pain has worn one down without complaint or demur. (the sacred grove)

Milady-

I have a passing knowlege but I hadn't seen the word 'Asatruar'. Is it 'Asatruar' is to Asatru, as Wiccan is to Wicca?

Maybe for the same reason that so many into the lifestyle are also involved in so many other geeky activities(SCA, Scifi, RPG, etc...)? Because we are more open minded.

I think your sig line started this post. I posted this on the Fuck You very much thread but i'll repost it here.

For those of you unfamiliar with Astaru ( the old Norse religion which surprisingly troll, Wulfie and i share some belief in) a quick lesson ;

Vegtam the Wanderer is the identity assumed by the All Father Odin to search for the Well of all wisdom to ask for a drink of it's waters in order to save Asgard.

The story goes that Odin arrived and at the Well and asks Mimir, the well keeper for a drink of the sacred waters. Mimir asks Odin disguised as Vegtam for his right eye. It is a huge price for an immortal because he is a warrior and needs his eye for battle as the Norse gods may be slain. In fact it is almost guaranteeing his death. Odin pays this price to save his realm and earns the knowledge to protect Asgard. Thus becoming known as the One Eyed God.

It is a story of sacrifice and death for the wisdom to change playing out that which we must go through in the course of life. Odin gave up part of that which made him a strong warrior in order to gain the wisdom to save his people, his home.

Thanks for the quick lesson.  I fell into the no, but I know it is group....just barely.  Do you know any good sites where an inquiring mind could go to learn more?  I'd search myself but there's never any way of knowing if you're reading the genuine material or something someone made up to screw with people.  I was already taken by those pesky Christians but I still like to learn.

You know i wonder if the fact that Odin is the All Father isn't connected to his being the One Eyed God?

I mean, think about it, a one eyed god is actually the father of every human on the planet, except clones.

I know you watch over me
Father of all the past
And all that will ever be
You are the first and the last

The watcher of all that lives
The guardian of all that died

The one-eyed God way up high
Who rules my world and the sky

Northern wind take my song up high
To the Hall of glory in the sky
So its gates shall greet me open wide
When my time has come to die

Here is a site. I was raised in the religion as a druid with Nordic faith, but this one is pretty good.

twicehappy, very interesting post, yet without being much aware of the core belifes and practices of Druid, I find that I go by a lot of what you posted (not everything)....could this be a point in common with other religions? How did Druid came about? I will read your link....interesting post.

The issue is deeper than this....it is the heisenberg uncertainty principle

just like opening a door to see what is behind it, you cannot see what is behind the spot the now opened door occupies.

He gave up current sight for foresight.  Just as many times we give up instant gratification for future fulfillment.
