My Immortal - Evanescence

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

San Diego Serenade - Tom Waits

I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.

I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind
I never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bind
I never spoke 'I love you' 'til I cursed you in vain,
I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane.

I never saw the east coast 'til I move to the west
I never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breast
I never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal,
tried to steal it away
I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face.

wow! can't beleive there isn't any country songs listed in a post called "heartbreak music" I always thought there was a lot of cry in your beer country songs..;)
I knew a guy who listened to "The Dance" over and over after his wife left him..
I love that Bonnie Rait song... had meaning for me at one point in my life.
songs can bring you  instantly back to a feeling.. a time.. good or bad.

The first one that came to mind is Willie Nelson's Wiskey River.

Then, in the "I need lots and lots of therapy genre," there's Lyle Lovett's LA County.

She's Got You - Patsy Cline

I've got your picture that you gave to me
And it's signed "with love," just like it used to be
The only thing different, the only thing new
I've got your picture, she's got you

I've got the records that we used to share
And they still sound the same as when you were here
The only thing different, the only thing new,
I've got the records, she's got you

I've got your memory, or has it got me?
I really don't know, but I know it won't let me be

I've got your class ring; that proved you cared
And it still looks the same as when you gave it dear
The only thing different, the only thing new
I've got these little things, she's got you

The Vandals have something to say about this.  And yes, it is a remake of an Elvis Presley song.

Vandals - Heart Break Hotel Lyrics

Heart Break Hotel by the Vandals
Ever since my baby left, found a new place I
dwell
It's down on the end, a lonely street called Heartbrak Hotel
Left
me in the gutter, mud on my face
Left me in the gutter, a total
disgrace
She took my manhood and broke it in two
Now what's a broken
hearted man sposed' to do?
Ever since my baby left, found a new place I
dwell
It's down on the end a lonely street called heartbreak hotel
Been
so lonely, so fucking lonely
So god damn lonely I could shit
I been so
lonely, so fucking lonely
So god damn lonely, wanna kill that bitch
cuz...
She was a cunt, she was a bitch, she left me with a cocktown hitch
(x2)
Go Gonna go grab some wires, put em' around her neck
I'll sit on her
face, make her eat my shit
Tie her up, feed her to the bats
Put her in
the cellar, feed her to the rats...

"I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor

I Will Survive Lyrics
by Gloria Gaynor[ Download Free Lyrics Software featuring Gloria Gaynor ] [ Send to a friend ]

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you're back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's loving me

I have a few,

Stormy Weather  (Lena Horne)
Funny, Here's That Rainy Day  (Sammy Davis Jr. did a very poignant rendition)
                                              (with Larendo Almeda)

And for me, this list must include

The Way I Feel   (Gorden Lightfoot)

The way I feel is like a robin
whose babes have flown to come no more
like a tall oak tree alone and cryin'
when the birds have flown and the nest is bare
Now a woman Lord is like a young bird
and the tall oak tree is a young man's heart
among his boughs you'll find her nesting
when the nights are cool she's warm and dry

Your coat of green it will protect her
her wings will grow,  your love will too
But all too soon your mighty branches
will cease to hold her and she'll fly from you

Now the way I feel is like a robin
whose babes have flown to come no more
like a  tall oak tree alone and cryin'
when the birds have flown and the nest is bare
when the birds have flown and the nest is bare

Another one:

Cleo Laine and Ray Charles did a "Porgy and Bess" album.

Her version of  My Man's Gone Now  will put cold chills down
your back on a hot summer day.   And the album has the most
witty liner notes I have ever read.

I cry when I hear No Woman No Cry.

I do not think it is a heartbroken song.  This person has nothing to give the woman he loves except a campfire in a poverty stricken town in Jamaica.  Yet he hopes she will come and share the fireside with him and accept what he has to share.

To me it is the most profoundly heart-wrenching love song ever put to paper.

A real oldie but a goodie

She thinks I Still Care
George Jones

Just because I ask a friend about her
Just because I spoke her name somewhere
Just because I rang her number by mistake today
She thinks I still care

Just because I haunt the same old places
Where the mem'ry of her lingers ev'rywhere
Just because I'm not the happy guy I used to be
She thinks I still care

But if she's happy thinkin' I still need her
Then let that silly notion bring her cheer
But how could she ever be so foolish
Oh where would she get such an idea

Just because I ask a friend about her
And just because I spoke her name somewhere
Just because I saw her then went all to pieces
She thinks I still care
She thinks I still care

I Can't Make You Love You Love MeBonnie Raitt  Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, dont patronize - dont patronize me

Chorus: cause I cant make you love me if you dont
You cant make your heart feel something it wont
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and Ill feel the power
But you wont, no you wont
cause I cant make you love me, if you dont

Ill close my eyes, then I wont see
The love you dont feel when youre holding me
Morning will come and Ill do whats right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
Chorus: cause I cant make you love me if you dont
You cant make your heart feel something it wont
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and Ill feel the power
But you wont, no you wont
cause I cant make you love me, if you dont

Well to me it's a heart breaking song.
The person I loved most in this world died of cancer, and she told me to remember her by it.
It can mean whatever you want it to mean to you.

The Beat 'Can't get used to losing you'
Morrissey's version of 'moon river'
The Damned - 'Alone again or'

A great instrumental to listen to that will open up feelings you may not want is DeBussy's 'clair de lune', best listened to with headphones alone.
