Time to change the subject....how about smoking, and how nasty it is?   [:D]

That's one of the things we are supposed to talk about, Chymes.  Now if someone wanted to suggest there were positive aspects to smoking, I think we'd have ourselves another example of things you can't say.

wickednnc -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 5:39:51 AM)

I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that smoking increased your IQ a couple of points for a brief period. How's that?

You have now made this post about things that you are unable to say....Go ahead say them!!!
No one was saying you don't have free speech...You aired your concerns about a particular story...You used your own words....You got flamed!  Where was free speech not allowed?  Instead of apologizing which it seemed was the original intention of this thread you have shifted it to poor pitiful WyrdRich....Everything you received you brought upon yourself!

To refresh your memory this is what YOU wrote last night.

WyrdRich

Ok, so can somebody explain to me just why I had to click to the second page in the link before I get enough information to figure out that the guy who murdered those people in the Utah mall was a Muslim?

Which was mentioned in all of the related links to the story as well as in the original

quote:

WyrdRich

It's an act of terrorism.  By a Muslim.  On American soil.  Why is it on page 2?

Your words....Offensive? Well thought out?  Racist?

quote:

WyrdRich

No, you didn't offer a solution.  It was inaccurate of me to say otherwise.  If your analysis of the situation is correct though, then the solution would be that people must be forced to conform.  That I'm going to have a problem with.  The kind of problem where I go join somebody's Army of Resistance and bring my own ammo.

You act like you are being forced to conform to a specific mind set....Good luck with that argument!...It seems that the majority of what you speak of I can find while watching Fox News....You CONFORM strictly to a conservative agenda...It seems you lack the ability to think outside the box...However I do think you do take bigotry/racism further than most conservatives just in the fact that they possess the common sense to keep their mouths closed

Let's just handle this the easy way, Julia (I think it's the right way too.)  My OP last night sucked.  I blew it.  It wound up on the screen easily taken the way it was.  I apologize to anyone who may have been offended.

Why couldn't you leave things at that?....But Nooooooo!  Had to add this little gem.

So, do we achieve conformity on the "1984" model, or the "Brave New World" paradigm?  I'm not liking those choices.

Poor WyrdRich can't spew racial/religious hatred without getting dragged on to the carpet....Sell it somewhere else...I'm not buying!!!

Free speech is wonderful....Go ahead spew your hate...It's your floor...Just don't be surprised when someone mops your ass with it.  (figuratively speaking of course...Mod11 is very particular about being to mean spirited...lol)

My Irish blood gets to flowing when it comes to Free Speech and that was part of the problem.

Wyrd, a good argument could be put together to suggest the problem is in this sentence (as you insinuate), but it's not what you think it is.

What does Irish blood have to do with free speech?

sensualmagirl -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 10:57:07 AM)

I think NorthernGent, he means his hot "Irish" temper gets flared when he feels his freedom of speach (i.e, his right to equate a muslim as a terrorist) is being infringed upon. (My mother often used that "irish temper" thing on us kids). But, then again, this is just another broad generalization. He seems to keep getting himself into trouble with those broad generalizations -- will do it to you everytime.

Meanwhile, Domiguy, over on another thread, this same person seems to advocate, or at least agree with another poster, a beleif that he does not hate based on race, religion, creed, nationality, etc.... go figure?

Sensualmagirl, from personal experience the Irish are a very reflective people. You go to Ireland and get a taxi and they are very quiet but pleasant all the same (they always seem to be deep in thought). There is a term "the fighting Irish" however and it's an indication of what's inside. The point is though, they're like any other part of the British Isles - they like a beer, they like to gamble and they'll take on all comers if there's a brawl involved - just like the Scots, Welsh, English.

sensualmagirl -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 11:09:29 AM)

heheheh... NorthernGent, yes, I never quite understood where my mother got that phrase when I got older and actually met people from Ireland (my grandparents were from there) and took a class in Irish Literature. It stopped making sense to me then.

Edited to say: maybe it's the watered-down American Irish decendents that have a hot temper? My father didn't, but, my mother sure could [;)]

NorthernGent -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 11:13:53 AM)

sensual, I'd be the first to recommend Ireland, but as always, things aren't necessarily what they seem.

Where the Irish do excel, and have a head start on most, is their hospitality.

Jim Kieth's thesis here seems a bit personal, arbitrary and scattered actually.
Good topic though.
Z.

Thanks for the reply, Zensee.  Hehehehe, a lot of Keith's work is a bit scattered.  My guess would be that he wanted topics far ranging enough to ensure that everybody would get a reaction to at least one of them.  In the early '90's, suggesting that AIDS had been cooked up in a military lab got the same kind of response from the "good Americans" that the claims of 9/11 as an inside job gets today.

Hey we all believe what we believe.

Of course when talking about 911, the problem is you are forced to believe that all the coincidences that took place on that one day just happens to be somehow normal.  Now you claim to be into science and math, and taking into consideration of just a few main coincidences and calculating the odds of this taking place on the same day it comes up to 4,100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 to "1" odds that they could have all happened on the same day!!   Combine that with all the physical evidence such as bombs not even being mentioned in "any" government report even though we can both see and hear them on many recordings and tapes pretty much shows that disbelievers are living in their own little bubble....of course you have the right to do that.

Operation ajax, tonkin, northwoods, now unclassified and open to the public not only demonstrates that the us engages in this kind of activity they are telling us point blank to our faces that they do!!!  including against the american people!!!  yet everyone loves to believe that reality is otherwise.

If people blamed a us military lab for aids maybe there is a good reason for it especially since the anthrax scare was us military grade anthrax created here.  think about that!

wyldsubmissive -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 12:09:43 PM)

To touch on point 6: Islam itself is not a religion of violence. Do you know what word appears most in the Koran (spelling is terrible I'm sorry)?

Love.

Honestly AIDs is the next plague, and we'd be better off utilizing biochem warfare. Harder to trace.

So a little this and a little that on both points...

sensualmagirl -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 12:12:44 PM)

Yes and Islam means "Peace" -- the terrorists who hijack the religion are an embarrassment to the other Muslims... from my personal experiences, I know how much it hurts other Muslims... This whole topic, keeps bringing up a lot of old wounds for me, but yet, I can't seem to turn away... I must be a massochist... ha ha ha [;)]

Actually Domi, this is an entirely different post.  I blew it on the other one and issued an apology.  You quote it a bit further down, but I guess you needed to vent a bit more first

Yeah, I indicated I stepped on my dick.  Trying to take a lesson from the experience and explore how such things happen, is how we grow.

Yup.  Pretty sensationalistic fact.  When the American media ignores an opportunity to exploit one of those, it trips my radar.

Which was mentioned in all of the related links to the story as well as in the original

quote:

WyrdRich

It's an act of terrorism.  By a Muslim.  On American soil.  Why is it on page 2?

And there is where I lost any chance of pulling that thread back where I intended it to go.  I wonder if this is how a pro athlete feels when they watch tape of a critical missed shot?
Maybe if I hadn't used the word terrorist...  That's the word I use for crazy violence.  Tell a shopkeeper you are going to burn down his store, the charge will be "making terrorist threats" in a lot of states.  When I think of Columbine, Oklahoma City, the shooting at the Jewish school in LA a few years ago, that's the word that pops into my mind.  People aren't mindreaders, I'm going to have to make an effort to use that word more carefully.

Your words....Offensive? Well thought out?  Racist?

We kinda covered the 'rascist' thing already.  That word is inappropriate.  Islamophobe might be a better choice.

WyrdRich

Again Domi, ( I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to say your name in my head.  Is it "Do Me Guy?) this is a different thread.  If you think I'm a rigid adherent to any particular "line," then you obviously haven't read very many of my threads or posts.  I believe Conservative solutions are the best to many social ills, but I'm not a kool-aid drinker.

As I explained at the time, that line was an lighthearted attempt to move this thread back towards this thread, with someone I know is quite familiar with at least one of those books.
Poor WyrdRich can't spew racial/religious hatred without getting dragged on to the carpet....Sell it somewhere else...I'm not buying!!!

      Then don't.

Free speech is wonderful....

Now here is something we can agree on.  I'm passionate about it, passionate enough that when I see something that makes me think it's being messed with, I see a bit of red and have been known to just lower my head and charge.  It's a dumb tactic, you run into walls and step in nasty stuff.  I'm a stubborn sort though, I'm going to pick myself up and come back for round 2 with that adrenalin working for me and my eyes open.

Go ahead spew your hate...

That wasn't my intention.  I meant to question why a sensationalistic media wasn't cashing in on an opportunity to do so.  The ratings would have been huge.
It's your floor...Just don't be surprised when someone mops your ass with it.  (figuratively speaking of course...Mod11 is very particular about being to mean spirited...lol)

My ass has been kicked before and probably will be again.  It's the price of being a smart-ass, opinionated, jerk.  I think the Mods also take a dim view of any sort of playing around inside the quoted passages.  I know it causes me to immediately lose whatever ammount of respect I might have had for the credibility of another poster, even if that amount was pretty much nil anyway.

WyrdRich -> RE: How to get called names (2/16/2007 4:17:44 PM)

      North

You got pretty much the answer I'd have given.  "Irish blood" is a phrase I grew up with to describe losing your cool.  Can't call me rascist on that one though.  I'm one of those ethnically muddled Americans, lots of UK/Northern Europe, and a bit of Chickasaw/Cherokee, but from what we can tell in the geneology research, more Irish than any other single thing.  Does that make me a self-hating Mick maybe?

Hate speech aside, I wanted to tackle this seperately, since it is on topic to this thread.

Do you think that is a good thing, Domi?  Having the common sense to keep your mouth closed about your opinion?  Do you think maybe we should have laws to protect society from people who don't have the right kind of "common sense?"  Wouldn't the world be a better place if we all just toe the line and 'go along to get along?  Are you some kind of Fascist?

Or did that just come out a little bit wrong?

Should CM have a flame zone?  A place where the gloves come off, and the "F-you's" can fly?  The online masochists can just start there and the botched ones can go there to die.

Since your Flame Zone thread got locked I had to come here to agree with the Mods. This is a related thread it seems.

Interesting idea but dangerous. We had a No Hold Barred area on a very good poetry forum I frequented and it did indeed spill out and poison the creative community, even those who did not participate. Eventually it led to the demise of the forum.
