This is where we have a mild communication issue.

The British ales you mention, they're not even in the fourth division of British ales. These are the mass produced stuff akin to your budweiser. Newcastle Brown Ale is considered to be dish water over here. Theakstons and Bass are mass produced rubbish. None of that stuff is fit to use to power your car. We have thousands of ales which you won't have heard of. Try the link I provided and you'll get a quick view of the magnitude.

If you consider we have more than 50,000 villages across Northern England brewing their own ales and tapping into thousands of years of experience, you'll begin to understand the potential for quality. I go across to Yorskhire and there are ales over there I never knew existed - the same goes the other way. If you're a beer lover, you have to go to a British beer festival - you'll be like a kid at christmas. The difference in Britain is ale brewing is not some sort of fashion fad or recent phenomena, it's not a past-time and it's not a social enhancing drug - it has been entrenched in our make-up for thousands of years i.e. it's part of the national psyche and holds huge significance in our society.

This is the third time I've heard non-Britons make a judgement on British beer based on the mass produced stuff you see over there. Come over, try our village ales and then we'll see what's what.

I'm game enough for a sample, Domiguy - send it my way.

ummm... wondering, am I the only one that noticed, you all are having very lengthy, somewhat heated, discussions about Beer?

Maybe somebody could be so kind as to answer a few questions since you seem to be experts. Back in the 80's when I was in Europe, I remember that the alcohol content was higher in beer there than in the states... is that the same now? Does that have anything to do with the taste? Also, wouldn't shipping something overseas affect the taste of beer? My friends dad loves beer (he's from Switzerland), but, he says to drink what is local to you for the best taste, he travels a lot, so searches out local favorites. Do you all agree?

Well, I just think everybody is going to like what they like. I personally, don't care much for beer, only on occasions, and depends on the company I'm with at the time... although, I had a delicious Strawberry Beer imported from the UK -- was about $5.00/bottle in the store 4 years ago though!

Arrogant bastard is a damn tasty beverage....like it much better than the Rogue ales...Rogue does make some pretty damn tast stouts....Mead is good. Sweet but good...definitely for sipping..Had a very tasty one from Germany recently...Have you tried Pizza Port Brewery in Carlsbad...was there last fall...Very tasty brews going on there...Higly recommend it.

Some beers get better with age usually the darker varieties...stouts..etc...most ales should be drank relatively quick...I.P.A's will lose some of their desired characteristics with time....the short time for shipping would pose no consequence...The sun is a killer for beers..."Sun struck" brews get a funky taste...also you should keep beers warm and then lightly chill toward serving or just keep them cold not back and forth...too much beer talk...need to have a pint...wail on sub susie and call it a night....take care.

Status: offline 		on the topic of beer...I love "Stella Artois" beer....specially when icey cold...I also tried Alhambra beer from Spain, but I prefer San Miguel, lol...in Chile I drink Kunstmann one of the few local beers with a touch of German tradition left (all other breweries have been bought out by the large CCU company)...int he US my favorite beer is Sam Adams...

Has anyone ever tried Tsingtao beer? or "Stella" from Egypt? curious.

As for mixed drinks...I love this drink called "The Incredible Hulk" its green and hardcore...lol...a mix of Hypnotiq and other licquors, can't ever remember the ingredients...LOL.

I've had Tsingtao quite a few times... it's tasty, but I find that it lacks the sort of back-of-the-mouth body that I find in ale. Still makes a nice change of pace when I want to drink something that's not American-made.

for the local beers there are Firestone Walker and
SLO Brew.  The more popular vineyards include Wild Horse, 
Edna Valley, Adelaida Cellars, etc.  The local wines
produced are usually chardonnays, merlots, cabernets
and white zinfandels.

I live about 10 miles from there. If you liked Pizza Port's ales you'll love Humbolt Hemp, especially their IPA. Seems to have rated pretty well on the rating site you linked to earlier. I have a group of guy friends who are beer afficiandos that put Humbolt's IPA on their list of top 3 beers they've ever had. These guys go all over Cali for beer tasting weekends and couldn't bring back enough of the stuff. You might want to try it out.

As someone who was once in the business I think the Belgium people are excellent craftsman /women when it comes to their beer. I'm looking at a bottle of Stella right now and it doesn't mention the alcohol content.....but I'd say its right around six percent.  

One that's very popular around here with the locals is ''Fat Tire''......and Portland has a whole ''cult'' following of Pabst fans also. Most of the barbershops / salons have the tradition of offering you a 16 ouncer while you wait for your turn in the chair.

As for "domestic" beers, Rolling Rock is ok, the rest suck.

Yay! Someone else who likes Chaucer's mead! They sell it warm at the ren fair near us and I simply go ga-ga over it.
