   My state of West Virginia is a clash of modern living vs the traditional ways.  One major topic of debate is hunting.  The state is abundant with deer, bear, wild boar...several other smaller game species.  And hunting here is heavily regulated by the state.  Those in the state say that hunting is needed to keep animal populations under control.  Whitetail Deer being the most regulated.  They are an introduced species and have no natural predators. 
  I wanted to see the opinon of those on this site as a actually respect many on your perspectives.  My opinon is that hunting is fine for two purposes.  
  1.)  Hunting for food.  I no difference between the grocery store and hunting...other than the deli is a lot easier.  If an animal is to be killed for food I believe hunting is more humane knowing how most farm animals meet their ends. Besides, living here I've eaten my share of meals prepared from Venison(deer).  I have to say that everyone should try it at least once in theie lives, except the vegetarians, who are no doubt foaming at the mouth over this post.  You will find nothing in a store that has the same flavor...unless of course you find it in a store.  I haven't yet, or I'd buy it.
  2.) Population control. I've had some first hand experience on this.  In years where the harvest of deer in the state is decreased more vehicle accidents involving them occur...I've had a few myself.  The damage it causes is amazing and the animal is always killed or otherwise crippled.  Again, what's the difference if it's by car or bullet.  Deer also do a lot of damage to crops so I can see needing to keep the numbers down for that reason.
Now, my gripe.  I hear on a near daily basis about the sport of hunting.  This I cannot explain.  I don't see killing an animal as a sport and can in no way condone killing one for no more than a trophy.  What is it a tropy of...you sat in the woods for an afternoon and pulled a trigger...or drew a bow.  Unless you charges the deer/bear/boar/racoon and wrestled it to death or the animal has a laser on its head firing back at you it is not a trophy.  So I reject the sportsman arguement.
Sorry about the novel, but I didn't see anything I could really cut out.  Your turn, like I said I'm very interested in your opinons.

Since hunters are probably intelligent give the animal a gun and let the hunter approach bare handed.

In my state recently they tried to make a "dove hunting season". Doves. The Sportsman were in favor of this.
I don't understand what thrill one could get from shooting a bird that i have to chace out of my driveway.
I do find irony in americans shooting a symbol of peace.

I am an avid outdoors person...Though I do not hunt I can see the appeal of it...Whether you hunt by bow or not. In many parts of the midwest you have to use a shotgun which means you have to get relatively close to be in the kill zone. (lovely phrase) It is something that is passed down from generation to generation...It is one way for a father to spend quality time with a son/daughter to teach respect for wildlife, weapons, and the sanctity of life.

Using a rifle means you don't have to be so close but you still have the wind, hiding your scent, not being visible against a skyline, the weather and other variables to contend with....also you have to be a relatively good marksman....many people flinch and have a hard time composing themselves at the point of taking a shot. Hunting is by no means an automatic kill...by learning patterns, trails being able to call in your game.... rattling horns, calls etc all take time to perfect and there is a huge amount of knowledge that goes into to becoming a "good" hunter. I have found that hunters and fishermen tend to be at the forefront of protecting the environment setting aside lands from building and protecting our diminishing wetlands, they are tremendous responsible stewards of our waterways and lands.....I personally don't know anyone who does not view their "sport" with a great deal of respect and a certain amount of humility.

I have a rule around my place. If you kill it you eat it, unless it is trying to kill you or is harmful.

Agreed, why would you even want to.  Even if you were claiming for sport I can't see the little feather dusters as prize trophies.

I support hunting and hunters rights. Venison is my favorite meat right after moose [:)] . Sadly not all that hunt should be allowed a gun but for the most part I have no problem with it, even on my land. Mmm bambi burgers! I'm currently begging a neighbor to share his meat hahahahaha.

Have you ever tried to shoot a dove?....You should know something about the sport that you are criticizing.

My friends who are avid hunters say that shooting doves is one of the most daunting tasks...they are extremely quick and wear armor....lol.

I am cool with deer hunting, used to do it myself once upon a time. I never enjoyed duck or pheasant hunting. Hunting doves, I honestly do not see the need. I mean, really, how many doves does it take to make a meal???

Just so we're clear before I get anymore ..."you're not up to the challenge" insults.  I do hunt...I can shoot a clay disk(conveniently the size of a dove) with a rifle at over 100 yards...shotgun at 60.  I hunt for food.  And again as a hunter,  since I had to out myself to answer your arguement...hunting the little feather duster is not my idea of sporting.  If all you're after is a hard target shoot the clay variety.

I knew there was a reason I like you.  Ever have in a stew cooked all day...it's great.  They should serve it on the cruise.

I think the op doesn't realize the dgree of skill that is necessary to be effective as well as successful...Bow  hunting is extremely difficult....tons of practice and you have to get very close...then you have to prepare (field dress) what you have shot....Much easier to go to the store....But tell me who has more respect for the anmal... the person that harvested it or the person who removes its flesh from plastic wrap?
