I do find the newer stuff too much 'need to shock', have you lot heard of a 'band' called napalm death!? there tracks are soooooo fast they last like 30 seconds! imagine paying to see a concert!

Im also a huge fan of The Cult but they are a metamorphosis type band having started out doing goth music with albums such as 'love' and 'dreamtime' but i would recommend you listening to 'sonic temple' and 'electric' albums by The Cult.

No question. Unfortunately, I dont' know that I qualify them as Heavy Metal; I consider them Alternative (though today I suppose they're Grunge, considering the crap they call Alternative today.)

I'm sorry to see the original 'Heavy Metal Thunder' band, Steppenwolf isn't listed. The grand daddy, even if not the best, is still worth a nod as an option.

I would say Metallica, as they ushered in the Metal revolution but then they sold out in a big way.

I'll go with AC/DC then.

True, Stephan, much of today's rock is putrid lol. I'm not sure how the band members would place themselves, but whatever it's called, I love their music.

I never cared for the pure speed bands (like Napalm Death or Deicide), though much of Slayer is fast, and I like them; I'd listen to the Cult over the Napalmsters any day.

I'm really not current on the latest stuff, but there is a particular song by Killswitch Engage, "The End of Heartache," Mixes a stomping beat with vocals that are almost R&B (plus a bit of that raspy 'satan voice' death metal). I really hope some garage band is listening to this constantly.

Pantera all the way baby! Although, Slayer's so pure metal...Dead Skin Mask or South of Heaven...come on!

mmmm....getting chills just thinking about it :)

I do have to say though, don't discount all the newer metal bands. There's a few like Chimera or Shadows Fall that are worth the time to listen to. Right now, Chimera's "Nothing Remains" is my favorite song.

What about bands like Korn or Slipknot? i like the odd tune now and agian but are they more youth orientated?

Korn has done some really fun stuff (check out the "Another Brick in the Wall 1-3" cover).

Slipknot has quite a reputation for the live shows. I dunno, I got kicked out of the beer garden twice that day and don't remember a bit of their act.
