Who would you vote for the best metal band of "all time"? I am a die hard Slayer fan---I lost count how many times I have seen them live, checking the ticket stubs (26 times and in 6 states). I have met all the members of the band, they definately kick ass...Danzig and Overkill are my second two faves....so much metal, so little time[8D]

' cause " I want a Mistress for x-mas" and I am "Thunderstruck" with "The Jack" who's a "squealer"   .
Besides that I'm going to "ride on" on the " highway to hell" till I'm "back in black" with a handfull of "TNT" and some "hells bells"...........any more questions ?? Or do I have to get Dirty Deeds ??

I don't know if I can tell you who is the "Best" heavy metal band of all time, but I can certainly tell you my current FAVORITE metal band:

Their latest CD "Catch Thirty-Three" is simply amazing!

     Thanks [:D]   I was hoping to see Sabbath or Ozzy.  I'm still blown away by the early Metallica albums, but they've just slid down into suck since losing Burton, can't bring myself to vote for a band that has been releasing garbage for better than 15 years.  Alice in Chains are a slightly different genre, but well worth cranking up and scaring the neighbors with.

The weird-ass thing about the age we live in, is that you can't really put out any "offensive" rock nowadays.  After GG Allin, Cannibal Corpse, and every other group with zero socially redeeming value, nothing shocks the under-40 crowd.

Sabbath. They're the band all the others aspired to, and cobbed from. Brutal, jackhammer riffs, lyrics unafraid of man's darker corners, and to some, a surprising amount of melody. "Megolamania", "Heaven and Hell",  "After Forever", "War Pigs", "Changes"..... all classic.

The Seattle boys, Alice in Chains (as Rich mentioned) and Soundgarden delivered some incredible music in a fairly short time. Check out "Room A Thousand Years Wide" and "Sunshine".

Agreed, Level.  Ask nearly any metal band what their influences are, Sabbath will be in there somewhere.

No question.  Unfortunately, I dont' know that I qualify them as Heavy Metal; I consider them Alternative (though today I suppose they're Grunge, considering the crap they call Alternative today.)

I'm sorry to see the original 'Heavy Metal Thunder' band, Steppenwolf isn't listed.  The grand daddy, even if not the best, is still worth a nod as an option.

I would say Metallica, as they ushered in the Metal revolution but then they sold out in a big way.

I'll go with AC/DC then.

It's all metal (except for a few,I mean AC/DC is a rock band,no more no less).The best is in the eye of the beholder(a nod to Metallica) if there ever was one.But if you are going to talk longevity,consistency,dedication to the art form,it begins and ends with Motorhead.
I mean my favourite band is Maiden,but I cannot listen to the "Blaze" years,one or two songs excepted.But Motorhead,I mean c'mon,it's not even close.Ask Lemmy,the only band he would ever allow anyone to say was better than his was The Ramones,and he was right!
