I started out many many moons ago, shortly after Al invented the internet using the moniker LdAragorn. First, the ID was limited to 9 characters, and I have always been a big Tolkien fan. It was a good way to ID the ignorati too. But, unfortunately, after the movie came out there were many variations of Aragorn and Iwas always getting slammed for shit other morons did. Of course, defending yourself only is a losing proposition no matter how you cut it. I never was real comfortable using the Ld either, just not my style. So eventually I formed this nick. I'll allow y'all to speculate on its genesis if you want. And I agree, when someone has the Master this or that or whatever I tend to snicker at them and not take them to seriously. Just my peccadillo. Sorry.

What fantastic replies!

I enjoyed reading every single one of these posts, I have an interest in people and how people think etc..

In answer to creativedominant I'm glad that My name applies a straight off possable "They might have a hearing loss", as that was the purpose behind My name at least, too many a time have I gotten bored with being a parrot and telling people I'm deaf, so if it comes across straight off the bat then I'm happy.

The other reason why I ask is because as a deaf person, someones name holds a bit of weight as we use what is known as "sign names", these sign names show a part of our personilty, and what we are like as a person. I used to wear a spikey collar when I was a teenager and I was very good at RE (Realious Education) at school so with that combination of the spikey collar (most people who know Me, know I'm kinky, but at the same time I think on My replies) plus they sometimes said I had the paitence of a saint so in time My sign name became "Priest". The sign incorparates the collar (spikey collar, my paitence and My kinky side)

Thanks again for all the replies, as said I have a curious streak with humans in general and I hope everyone enjoyed this topic in some way :)

I've been using the same nic wherever I post for years. I chose it because it really does describe me -- even in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, I prefer to be barefoot whenever possible. And "gal" (although most of the time I hate that word) seemed to state the obvious -- hey, I'm a girl.

Over the years, I have discovered that it does attract a certain variety of fetishists. Ironically, that's a kink I don't share. So I usually just politely say "no thank you" to the offers of toe sucking and the like.

I've also learned that the chat abbreviation sometimes used -- BFG -- can really throw the Brits out of whack, as that is the name of a fairly popular children's book by Roald Dahl.

Personally, I am attracted to names that seem to have a story behind them. Not only online, but in real life too. My given name is very unusual (due to having been born overseas) and I've been known to ask waiters/waitresses and cashiers who are wearing nametags about the origins of their unusual names. It's amazing the motivation some people have for selecting a name for their baby!

I've always had a chip on my shoulder when it came to names that showed up in my inbox. The more dom, master, sir, etc that there was in their name, the more I was sure I wouldn't like what they had to say. Then LaM showed up and that all flew out the window. He's an exception though. For the most part I like names that could be used in a vanilla site. I think one can be so much more creative and revealing with those types of names.

Both my nicks I use on the net where picked out for me. I went with rascallymisty because it does not draw a lot of attention....my other nick on the other hand, does...."BuxomBlonde".

When I hosted for MSN the Bux nick got me the attention I wanted. When I learned that I was submissive I did not want to stand out but to learn more about the lifestyle....so misty works well.

Nice replies.

I forgot to mention the name I use now WoS, I do cap the W and the S to show it's a big part of My life, however it came from a t-shirt I had made which went "My World of Silence" at the time I thought it sounded good, and I've been using it alot recently :)

Another of My fave's is "Medical Messup" which gets some glances from people when I wear the t-shirt but decided against using it as a user name, as I felt it sounded too extreme.

I had given some thought a few years ago and recently when I entered this site. I think that titles such as Master really have to be earned in the hearts of those who recognize your dominance over them. I grew up as a child in South Texas calling all my elders Sir and Mamm. It's a habit that has carried on till today. I have no problem showing respect and courtisey to anyone. It cost me nothing and does not demean me in any way.
I chose my screen name years ago after doing some research and found that the cateran were 16th century Scottish brigands, or highwaymen. It made me smile to identify with rakes of old. I am who I am and do not pretend to be anything else. At my age I don't have to put on pretences or live up to anyone's expectations other than my own.
Cateran works for me. Of course I do like the occasional.. Oh God!.. Oh God!

I would hope that people don't judge simply because of thier handle/ nic name.
it goes back to the saying that our mothers taought is as children- don't judge abook by its cover! my professional email and other acounts are my full name @ wher ever.com, so here, i struggled to think up an anonomus nic name . I 'm shy so shygirl it was, and the 86 for my birth year. Not original , I know, and i hope that it doesnt discriminate from people talking to me.

Heh. I was much the same way, shygirl. All my email addresses have my last name and either my initials or my first name. I just didn't think it would be appropriate for a fetish site...

While I do tend to read posts before I really pay attention to usernames, userids with titles or sexual references in them do tend to tip the balance for me when I'm not sure of what to think of a certain poster. When they show up in my CM bulkmail, as they usually do, my opinion is pretty much set before I open it. Occasionally I get a surprise, but not terribly often.

But I'll go a step further and suggest your post smacks of posturing hypocrisy!

My name has zero bdsm connotations to it, other than the connections people make with posts I've made under this particular name. The name comes from a character in a novel I wrote. I embody the "little" character of the overblown character in the book, if that makes sense.

But for other people, names really don't mean much to me unless they are specific enough to cause me to NOT want to know the person behind it, like when the person's name is something like BIGCOCK72 or GRLHATEZMEN, although the latter one might STILL cause me to take a look at the email.

Hi

A persons profile name does sometimes stand out to me if it is something specific. For example if someones name is refering to a type of play they like to engane in a lot and I dont I usually wont look at their profile. I dont think someones name always reflects on them though as people have pointed out , sometimes trying to think of something unique and perfect for yourself is difficult. I was a bit drunk when i made my profile on here and i picked my name as canupleaseme becasue i didnt want mistress or godess and couldnt think of anything else.

I do however love seeing really unusual names and trying to work out why they had been picked. And friend of mine told me that she uses anagrams for all her profile names so if I am really bored and someone has a bizarre name i will try n see if its an anagram of something else ( that sound sso sad now !!! though i have found 4 before!!1)

I started using this name long before the internet, when making contacts was rather more difficult. If I was with a 'vanilla' or unknown group and someone picked up on the name (better known in those days) perhaps by a raised eyebrow or grin, I had a start of sorts. Not really needed these days - but Ive used it a long time.
