[RANT ALERT]

I am a news junkie...and now, I am an outraged and disgusted news junkie.

With the current Walter Reed scandal, the struggle for debate of the single most important American issue raging in both houses of Congress, the stepped up lethality of attacks against our troops in the occupation, further revelations of signing statements and bill attachments sneaking in breaches in our civil liberties and further stripping our economy, I turn on the news to see both how the media is covering these pressing issues, and to find out more information.

...and am subjected to a farce of a court battle about a bloated dead celebutard corpse and a self indulgent idiotic girl who is self destructing...... ON THE NEWS!

Our news has been interrupted for almost an entire day with some moronic weeping judge performing his melodramatic monologue about his anguish at having to make a legal ruling which should have required about 10 minutes of common sense time,  and the bad behaviors of a second rate pop singer shaving her head and checking in and out of rehab.

What a sad commentary on or society that this is what we allow to override the news when our citizens are dieing abroad, and our people are suffering at home in so many vital ways.

What is wrong with us all?

Great topic.

I read the other day that more votes were cast in ''American Idol'' than George Bush had in the 2004 election.

To me that speaks volumes as to where our nation could be headed. Most folks don't realize it.....but they are subconsciously dumbing themselves down by interacting in /with such a passive medium. This type of medium allows ''simpleton like'' information  to flow into the subconscious unregulated, which in turn makes them intellectually lazy and uncaring. It’s really hurting our country.

puella,
Nothing. We are getting served exactly what we are ordering. Is is a simple matter of economics. Broadcast news must generate a profit. Profit is the only motivating factor when decisions are made concerning news content or its delivery. Gossip sells, sex sells; and it is cheap to produce.

People are frustrated with politics and politicians. They don't have the desire, and perhaps most don't have the ability to differentiate fact from rhetoric so they avoid news of that nature. I believe most don't want to be drawn into the frustration of the war in Iraq, and don't have a clue regarding the news issues that you raise. Congress just spent four days debating a referendum on the war that had no impact; and people applauded the result.

Look at the focus of the candidates for the presidency in 2008. They are here in Hollywood soliciting handouts from the entertainment industry. Their platform will not be built upon effecting any change that isn't approved by Geffin, Spielberg, and others of their ilk.

Sunday, Al Gore will get the biggest ovation when he wins the Oscar for his dramatic documentary version of the movie "Day After Tomorrow". Its entertainment. News? You have to be willing and dedicated to go get that on your own.

"Bread & Circus" provided by a media whose only goal is the bottom line.

Hi Merc....

Other than the first paragraph in your post..... I think you're on the money.

However, if the first paragraph in your post were true......why doesn't any of the mainstream news networks assemble a panel of experts and have a show that dedicates itself to alternative theories surrounding subjects such as the Oklahoma City bombing and 9 /11?

George Noory and the Coast to Coast program has almost 600 radio affiliates in this country alone and is fast closing in on Limbaugh and the most listened to radio program in the world. Every time there is there is a show about 9 /11....it gets the highest ratings.

I guarantee you if the networks put together some of these types of shows with a similar panel of renowned experts, it would gain them ratings /advertising dollars and supplant all types Michael Jackson / Anna Nicole Smith coverage that regularly dumbs down the public.

I sure hope you're right. But if it's that easy, I can't help but wonder what has prevented it from happening thus far.

I know, both stories are being pushed into the local and network
news to boost ratings.  IMO they should be covered in the entertainment
sections of newspapers and Web news sites only.

This kind of nonsense is a way of distracting people from the
very important and very real problems that need to be
resolved.

A very diplomatic and feminine way of putting it. Nice style.

I suppose it's easy to get lost in the world of celebrities. It doesn't require much thought and there isn't going to be a slow, painful realisation that the world can be a rough hole. Celebrities feed peoples' fantasies of being someone, being noticed and not just the bloke/lass who comes in the shop for their papers and a bottle of milk in the morning. People want to be somone and while it is impossible for 99% of us to be a Bill Gates or a Richard Branson, there is a slim possibility that people will achieve fame through celebrity - i.e. pop idol and all that. It's a dream people can relate to.

Off topic, but a point along similar lines. A photographer was recently paid £2m for a photograph of prince william's girlfriend in a bikini.......she's a bonny girl and all that, but priorties are completely and utterly out of order.

Mass media is not going to ask you or me what 'issues' we are interested in hearing about.  They are going to produce news of all sorts, that all sorts of people may or may not like to see.

I think perhaps we can find interest in,  learn from, acknowledge, and create awareness for all types of human issues and experiences out there.

It's a fair point i.e. the definition of news is a matter for personal taste and news of any description is available (to an extent e.g. official secrets act etc). No disagreement here.

More importantly however, society has the balance completely wrong in terms of the sort of news the majority seek out i.e. priorities are completely and utterly out of order. I appreciate priorities are subjective (hence, this is my opinion).

If you get a chance, read the following "Why The World Hates America" (by an American, Mark Hertsgaard). It isn't really about the world hating America. It is concerned with Americans' perception of the world and why, when they consider non-Americans' sense of bewilderment when viewing US foreign policy, they can jump to all sorts of strange conclusions such as hate and jealousy. The important conclusion he made is this: the majority of Americans don't understand the outside world and they don't appreciate what their government is doing and their destructive policies. The lesson here is too much concern for celebrity news equates to not enough consideration of government policy and this gives them the platform to do as they please. This is not unique to the US by any stretch of the imagination, but, reading between the lines, this is more deep-rooted in the US than say Europe. Whenever I hear views on the Middle East (the "they're all lunatics" approach) on this board, this book springs to mind.

I saw the recent announcements speculating about a possible
engagement and footage of the paparazzi following the girl
as she walked from her home to work.  Then the eerie feeling
of deja vu came over me, remembering how Diana was followed
by the paparazzi when her engagement was announced. Too bad
the princes do not appoint body guards to their girlfriends to lessen
such behavior.

Very kind and the feeling is a two way street :-)...or am I being naive and missing a more sinister plot?

Anyway, I think the author in question writes for one of your newspapers - possibly The New York Times. He did a spot of interviewing and tapped into his experience of the US. His conclusion.

the media can suck my dingleling

the public OWNS teh airwaves. you and i.

they lease them, and must serve the public.

programming has gotten so crappy- too many commercials, promos, content to ads per hour-
and we pay via our time. for the tv set itself, elcectric, cable/sat  AND all taxed.  keep in mind you and i OWN teh airwaves.

set up a pirate radio station, see how fast clearchannel shuts you down.

so if say- all of us here- put up an antenae- and broadcast-         -we would be law breakers- possibly even felony.

the point is- we the peons dare not participate. [thats the problem]

the media  now want the Internet.  the days of teh Internet as we know it are numberred.  MARK MY WORDS.

Nothing wrong with me, because if I ran the network, that shit wouldn't be on there lol. But yeah, puella, it's sad when that stuff crowds out real news.

See, this is a very serious case of being in the wrong fuckin' place at the wrong time.....

On a brighter note, I'll soldier on with the thoughts until I land on your doorstep.

How's your cooking these days? Scale of 1 to 10? Explanation required.........in fact, I have a questionairre in my back pocket that I may just type up and send over there.

Im a fine cook; an 8 on a scale of 1-10, but I have higher potential when given regular ass whippings for not getting the sauce quite thick enough.  I can also scrub a mean kitchen floor after you're done using me on it and making me eat my pasta e fagioli out of that pretty bowl that says "NGs Pet" on it.  And when all that is done, my place is in front of the sink, the washing machine, and then cleaning your toilet if you'll so allow me the priviledge.

Oh and did I mention I polish good head?   ;)

Politics however,  are a hard limit.  A female's mouth is put to better use I'm sure.

and you're single?! what a criminal waste of a good woman. I can't believe there isn't a man in New Jersey who isn't falling over himself to watch you eat pasta from a bowl, do you wipe your paws when you've been out for a walk in the rain, too, like a good little pet? I have been known to bundle my submissives into the washing machine and give them a quick spin dry when they get a bit uppity. They tend to come out of the experience with a far more grounded approach to life. A friendly spot of advance notification :-)

Not to dredge up another corpse, no pun intended, but ironically applicable to this OP... did anyone see the Fox news guy criticizing Anderson Cooper for chastising the priorities of the news services for spending so much time on these stories when we have men and women dying overseas, with no foreseeable out?
