popeye1250 -> Al Gore's "Carbon Footprint." (2/27/2007 3:08:52 PM)

I'm listening to a talk radio station and they said that someone got a hold of Al Gore's electric bill for his 20 room home for the last two years.
My bill runs around $40-$50 per month for electricity for a 1300 sq ft 3 b/r 2 bath condo.
I think Al's getting screwed because his bill is running about $30,000 per year for the last two years!
They said that his "Carbon Footprint" (whatever that is) is twenty times that of the average American.
Kind of seems just a little hypocritical of him to be lecturing us on "Global Warming" doesn't it?

pulled from MsPoetress' post. This is the article.

Armed with Gore's utility bills for the last two years, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research charged Monday that the gas and electric bills for the former vice president's 20-room home and pool house devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours.

"If this were any other person with $30,000-a-year in utility bills, I wouldn't care," says the Center's 27-year-old president, Drew Johnson. "But he tells other people how to live and he's not following his own rules."
The Center claims that Nashville Electric Services records show the Gores in 2006 averaged a monthly electricity bill of $1,359 for using 18,414 kilowatt-hours, and $1,461 per month for using 16,200 kilowatt-hours in 2005. During that time, Nashville Gas Company billed the family an average of $536 a month for the main house and $544 for the pool house in 2006, and $640 for the main house and $525 for the pool house in 2005. That averages out to be $29,268 in gas and electric bills for the Gores in 2006, $31,512 in 2005.
The press release from Johnson's group, an obscure conservative think tank founded by Johnson in 2004 when he was 24, was given splashy attention on the highly-trafficked Drudge Report Monday evening, and former Gore aides saw it as part of a piece, along with an Fox News Channel investigation from earlier this month of Gore's use of private planes in 2000. Last year, a seemingly amateurish Youtube video mocking the "An Inconvenient Truth" turned out to have been produced by slick Republican public relations firm called DCI, which just happens to have oil giant Exxon as a client.

The "Center" which discovered this usage doesn't discuss the size of the home...It's twenty rooms!...The Center has an agenda...a conservative one!

So this is where you get your news....Whenever I read an article I always consider the source and do they have an overt or hidden agenda...left/right....

$30,000 in utility costs annually  is a shitload to be spending, but it is a twenty room house...The guy is rich!  The question one would actually want to ask is how much do other twenty room houses with a pool and a guest house pay in utilities a year.

Oprah has a mansion why not attack her? she has done shows on global warming...Because she is not in the political arena that's why. This is why politics blow right now.

Whether Global warming is a serious concern is something people can debate....What cannot be debated is the fact that pouring all of this shit into the atmosphere does and is going to have some sort of detrimental affect on the planet, us, as well as all other living things...

Lake Michigan is huge...We have fish advisories, beach closings, and the Chicago river (which connects with lake Michigan) is so polluted you are not even supposed to swim in it because of all of the waste we have pumped into the lake...there is always a cause and affect...Whether you dislike the message or the messenger it is something that is foolish to ignore or just simply push under the rug.

But I figure it would never occur for anyone to think like that. Is Al Gore entitled to live in a "mansion?" I suppose people are entitled to the lifestyle they have earned.... Is it hypocritical, maybe.

What is more offensive in this article is that a Conservative group put out a video on you tube...And tried to pass it off as an amateur production....I guess if you don't care about the truth you will seek your news from whatever source that doesn't contrast with your political views....This way you don't have to hurt yourself by thinking.

Poetress, they used to call them "Limosine Liberals" but now that they all have private planes they're "Gulfstream Liberals."
"Do what I say not what I do."
Like John "French" Kerry said, "(I) don't own 7 SUVs MY FAMILY owns 7 SUVs."
And a private jet ("The Flying Squirel"), 5 or is it 6 Mansions, an ISLAND, (Naushaun Island in Cape Cod, Mass), a yacht "Scaramouche".
I bet the jet and the yacht can chew up some dinosaur juice!
And of course they "believe" in Public schools but they *never, never, never* send their own kids to them!
"The Secret Service told us not to."
"It's too far away."
"The kids were ALREADY in Philips Exeter Academy so....."
Or the "better served" excuse.
"We just feel that little johnny would be "better served" by going to....."

Im not meaning to insult the guy, but am I the only one that noticed how much weight Al has gained? He's gained quite a few pounds since 2000.

The secret service doesnt like to take the chance they might be out gunned thats why chelsea went to private school, instead of a DC local.

Nosathro -> RE: Al Gore's "Carbon Footprint." (2/27/2007 9:06:21 PM)

I recall an interview when Al Gore was the VP.  It concerned Government spending.  It had been noted and sugguested that many of our elected government members have on the average 5 fully staffed office in Washington DC and in their respective home states all at Taxpayers expense.  VP Al Gore stated although some did not need 5 offices He did.

I wish you well

Dtesmoac -> RE: Al Gore's "Carbon Footprint." (2/27/2007 10:03:47 PM)

Lots of businesses use the principle of carbon offsets, whereby if they reduce someone elses carbon emisions then they can continue with their own releases. From producing the film and doing various talks old Al's "carbon offsets would now far outweigh his 20 room carbon releases. If you invest $200k and make $2 million the 200k initial extravagence is not normally questioned...............until someone has a political agenda. The neocon skeptics are loosing the argument on science and logic and so move to personality attack.

That is just one house.

Oprah has a mansion why not attack her?
I cannot find anything to despute she is isn't using some sort of energy saving system, but I cannot find anything that states she does.

quote:

Then there is the troubling matter of his energy use. In the Washington, D.C., area, utility companies offer wind energy as an alternative to traditional energy. In Nashville, similar programs exist. Utility customers must simply pay a few extra pennies per kilowatt hour, and they can continue living their carbon-neutral lifestyles knowing that they are supporting wind energy. Plenty of businesses and institutions have signed up. Even the Bush administration is using green energy for some federal office buildings, as are thousands of area residents.

This is what I am getting at! I can find something that says he is not using some energy saver system, but I sure in hell can't find anything stating that he has made the change.

How is making a film and travelling around promoting it a carbon offset?  How is tens of thousands of people driving to see Al Speak in a heated, lighted room, with electronic special effects a Carbon offset?

Gore should of left a bigger footprint of himself in his homestate of Tenn. Then he would of had the boost he needed to be the President.

Ah, I don't think his "home state" is Tennessee. He "claims" it as his "home state" but he grew up in the Washington, D.C. area in Georgetown because of his father being in politics.
He didn't grow up on the east side near Martin Luther King Blvd.

Sanity -> RE: Al Gore's "Carbon Footprint." (2/28/2007 5:44:30 AM)

Why not attack Oprah, you ask?

Because she isn't preaching to the masses about the dangers of gluttony like the Rev. Al Gore is. And "The Center" is unbiased. Why is it you feel you have to attack the messenger when you find out that your preacher man (Al Gore) is a huge hypocrite. Just face facts, instead - he doesn't believe what he preaches.

Well everyone. Here the rubber meets the road.

WHAT DO WE DO?

I hear people pissing on others because of where they stand on the issue. And I wonder if this has just become more bullshit to waste time on.

WHAT DO WE DO?

I'm tired of hearing about "RIGHT and WRONG". What's the next step in moving forward?

Did anyone even bother to think about that?

Perhaps FIRST we should decide what experiments and data are needed to draw conclusions useful for figuring out WHAT if anything is happening? And then we can decide if anything IS happening, IF it's good or bad, and WHAT if anything should be done?

I do know one thing. ANYTHING The Bush Admin. says can be discounted, given their established track record lying.

THEY no longer get to have an opinion. Fool me once, shame on you... We won't get fooled again.

Just to fill in a few more blanks and pick up where domiguy left off...

What they did not report was that he is paying more money for his energy than the average Joe because he is using renewable energy sources (that would be green, kids), which due to the lack of infrastructure, costs more at this point as an option for your energy needs.  So in effect, he chose to pay more out of his pocket to ensure that he is not using an energy source which rapes the earth.

Secondly, what is also not reported, is that both his and his wife's offices, and their staff, is located within and run out of that residence....

Thirdly, he has certain security issues with which he must comply (via the secret service) as a former Vice President.. and in general, as a person of fame who has serious security issues (Let's  not forget the bogus right wing story about Nancy Pelosi and the plane she demanded, which she actually didn't demand, and asked if she could not use, but was told by the pentagon was required for her position.)

Then of course, to top it all off... due to all the things Al Gore has chosen to institute within his own lifestyle, even taking a private jet, he STILL has a negative carbon footprint... I wonder how deep the carbon foot print is on his vociferous detractors?
