Military considers recruiting foreigners
Expedited citizenship would be an incentive
By Bryan Bender, Globe Staff  |  December 26, 2006

WASHINGTON --

"The armed forces, already struggling to meet recruiting goals, are considering expanding the number of noncitizens in the ranks -- including disputed proposals to open recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to US citizenship if they volunteer -- according to Pentagon officials."
"The idea of signing up foreigners who are seeking US citizenship is gaining traction as a way to address a critical need for the Pentagon, while fully absorbing some of the roughly one million immigrants that enter the United States legally each year."

Maybe if they promised additional virgins as a mission bonus they could recruit some nutbars away from the bad guys.

It's worth a try.

Yanno.... I'd would swear on the good book that there was a thread a short while back bragging on how the military had accomplished its recruiting goals. Well... since they know Dave and John have become a lil' smarter and don't want to be exposed to depleted uranium, they're gonna go after Pedro and Miguel instead. See....you just can't trust the Pentagon.

Many people could tell we did not have enough troops, despite what they tell us.
Why are many of the servicemen deployed several times?

Wouldn't be the first time.  They were recruiting in Ireland back in the 1860's ;)

And making a lot of the micks fresh off the boat into citizans so long as they joined up.

I do believe that France has a foriegn legion, I see it as a good idea....Recruiting goals were met do to a widening of the standards. I'n sure they have increased the cat 4's in all branches. It is a global war and I do believe the terrorists recruit from all over. I might go back for a bonus of virgins, shiny new slave girls...AWESOME idea? Is Caitlyn a virgin?

These type of statements that fly in the face of reason, but that are supported by neo-cons and thinktankers with no real world experience are oft forwarded by the armchair world rulers in other forums.

To run a war and its aftermath, you need lots of cannon fodder. The real plus to this, is that the talking heads can say, see we were right, 125,000 american troops were all we needed or any variation of that (with it being understood that the others dont cound)

The problem that arises is that with our belligerent attitude to the globe in general, we will find ourselves on slippery slopes in these matters (cites: machiavelli, clausewitz, sun tzu et al)

Throwing that out there just shows how much the war has depleted or military capabilities.

Historically nations have often hired mercenary troops or recruited non citizens into their armies some voluntarily and some not but this really is no different then what is done just expanded. Instead of the mostly poor who join up to the service it just expands into other people willing to gamble with their lives for a chance of a better tomorrow.

And historically, those that do will be overcome by them.  You can't outsource your defense.  Wergeld!!!!!!

Yes xBullx the French still maintain a 6,000 man Foriegn Legion, however the current Government seems not willing to use them.  They just deployed a Task Force to Africa and only an engineer detachment of the Legion was included. Spain also maintains a Foriegn Legion.
Historically the US offically has been against hiring Mercenaries but that seems largely ignored.  Washington maintained a group (about 600) of Professional Soldiers as his "Shock" Troops.  Washington had one hell of a time getting the Congress to send the money to pay them.  The Congress wanted more "Citizen Soldiers".  In Vietnam we hired those who fought with the French and the Mountain Yards...saddly when we left we abonded the Mountain Yards.
The idea of offering US Citizenship to those willing to serve in the Military is rather standard.  Getting back to the French after 5 years in the Leigon you become a French Citizen.

I wish you well

Ron,

Agreed, you can't outsource your defense. But we have outsourced offense for years. Just not in plain site. If you can't get the Rest of the worlds Governments to engage this new enemy, then borrow a thing or two from them that they don't want anyway. Their people. I do believe you do it in a Foriegn Legion capacity. They are going to serve a seperate purpose than our own warriors, Nothing better or worse, just different.

Sending foreigners off to fight is an excellent way to avoid the shedding of good American lives.

Of even greater value, is that foreign fighters who later become U.S. citizens will become some of the highest quality citizens; they will have learned valuable skills, and have spent several years of their life willing to risk that very life, for the defense of their new country.  As a former Marine, we learn to value our society and way of life a great deal more, when our lives are risked in it's defense.

I see very few reasons this should not happen.  I'm hardly worried about potential spying or infiltration of people with the intention of causing harm; a foreign fighting force would not have any greater access to information than is already published on the internet.  I imagine there would be steps taken to effectively separate groups of enlistees from different countries, to prevent any sort of collaboration.

Multiple comments:

1 - If they got them in the service at least they would be legal in this country.

2 - The military has outsourced (historically and currently) components of its service.  for example, All those liberty ships during WWII weren't manned by GIs,  That is why we lost so many in the Merchant Marine.  During Viet Nam, we flew the troops over on charter aircraft as opposed to putting them on troop ships.

3 - I have worked with the French Foreign Legion.   For many, the incentive was to avoid prosecution for crimes committed elsewhere.  Also I think there is a prohibition against fighting on French soil - but I could be wrong.

I thought Mexican Nationals could earn citizenship through military service, perhaps I am mistaken about that?

If you are mistaken so am I.  I recall several making national news not long ago.  Serve America and we will speed up your citizenship.
Two of three at that time was the story.

Perhaps they are just merely taking it national again for those who hadn't heard?

I remembered it stuck out in my mind because Rome doing the same thing is part of what caused its empire to collapse... but people rarely learn from history
