AquaticSub -> Help An Artist Please? (3/1/2007 3:24:18 PM)

So, as some may know, I'm a student working on an art degree. Once upon a time I did a painting of myself with wax being dripped on my breasts. In explaining it to my teacher, I commented that the government was cracking down on images they consider deviant and that people had gotten fired for being outted as living a BDSM or D/s lifestyle (whatever you wanna call it). Her response was to not believe me, citing that business and government had better things to do with their time then investigate these things.

Now I've been assigned a project where I am supposed to take a cause (social, political, whatever) and do a piece to raise awareness on it. Well, I've already done this assignment twice before since painting 3 is just painting 2 again and now I'm taking painting 4. So, having already done gays in the military and not judging the choices of a young mother (whatever they may be), I'm thinking of making this my assignment. I'm not sure what image I'll be painting but I was hoping to paste/collage articles in the background. Perhaps taking pages from BDSM texts and mixing them in with whatever horror stories I can find. I know I have an article about a man who was fired for being a dominant.

What I was hoping to get help with is finding articles or recommending texts. I know that many of the people on this forum have been around the lifestyle longer then me and perhaps some link to an article saved away, or even just your own personal stories. Thank you so much for reading this and thank you for all the help you can give. I'm not even sure if my teacher is going to allow this, but I hope it will become something wonderful.

Try searching "Paddleboro." It's the nickname for an event gone bad in Attleboro, MA a few years ago.

Aqua, I would like to point out, although you may have already considered it, that the worst prisons are the prisons of the mind. With so much negative media and harsh treatment of BDSM folk the prison of the mind is being built block by block.

This is true. I'm having trouble thinking how I want to explain this project to my teacher. And honestly I'm scared of what my classmates will say. But at the same time, I don't want to be imprisioned by what others think. I'd rather show people, through outing myself, that subs and doms are nice normal people. I'm lucky in that Valyraen doesn't mind my doing this.

Look up Jack McGeorge. He was a weapons inspector in Iraq who was outed in the Washington POST. The UN backed him while the US government didn't. If you want more info, email me on the other side.

What if you do it with the approach of how the BDSM is missunderstood.  That sometimes the public or officials think it is a
case of BDSM when it is just a couples own fetish that caused the problem.  This would show how BDSM is the scape goat for some maritial games that go bad.

Personally I could think of many other subjects that are much more relevant and important than folks being maligned for participating in BDSM....This is not a united front...And are you going to address all aspects?... from breath restriction to scat..to cbt...just to name a few....I think you are looking at wiitwd through a bit of tunnel vision, and all though your sentiments are real they just might be a little misplaced.

But good luck. I hope you can find a topic or a people that are truly engaged in a meaningful fight that are worthy of your skills..

Oh by the way....I would fire most of you....lol.  And I would sleep like a baby.

Wow Aqua, that's a really powerful project and I didn't know about that for you and it brings a delicious depth to your personality.  Try looking up NCSF and all the stuff they have.

*blushes* Thank you. Right now I'm not sure where it's going to go, but I've had the idea of using various "manuals" in the piece and then having intact copies that my classmates (or whoever) can browse through to learn about what I do, what others do and why we do it.

teacher sounds uptite. i know of a fine arts student at FIU in miami where he did his masters work showin photos of him n friends shootin heroin.no kidding. he is an amazing photographer, but people were interested in the content as well. artistic expression shouldn't be homoginized or made to conform, then its not art.

It wasn't so much that she wanted me to conform. She has no problem with me doing sexual pieces. She just didn't believe me that there was a problem and more or less waved her hand at the subject. She's a fanastic teacher who was a real rebel in her youth, I just don't think this is something she knows about.

I admire your courage! I have painted several works with bdsm themes, but I doubt I could ever turn one of them in to my professor! I dunno where to find new articles, but I wanted to wish you luck in this marvelous endeavor!

AquaticSub,

Your project may be right here, in the message boards. I'll try to be brief (for a change):

I met Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, a few years ago. He is a simply wonderful man, and as I listened to him speak about his experiences it occured to me that here was a sort of Jackie Robinson figure. Somehow, he was picked to be the first openly gay man, living with a male partner, to be made a bishop of the Episopal Church, and both he and the church knew full well how rock-tough he was going to have to be to withstand the horrible things that would happen because he was willing to be the first. I've followed his story closely, and all this has taken a toll on him, but it's still clear that the church picked the right person. He hasn't apologized for who he is, he's been a magnificent pastor, and he is going to go down in history as a decent man who would have gotten better treatment in a more enlightened time.

Did I say I'd be brief? Sorry.

All I meant to say was, the threads here in which those of us who might feel shame for this part of ourselves or who would risk our jobs and any future employment in the careers we love because of our private, consenting, adult relationships, could really have some fodder for your art. There are so few "acceptable" prejudices out there any more (meaning, people get away with expressing them, even in polite company -- NOT meaning they areally ARE acceptable). One that is "acceptable" is against fat people. Another is against anyone who deviates from some ficticious sexual norm.

So...why is that us? And will we ever have a Jackie Robinson, a Gene Robinson? Do we need one?

Maybe something there...

This

http://www.cinematical.com/2006/01/13/wachowski-sex-scandal-behind-matrix-suckage/

is kinda interesting, and your classmates/prof would probably catch the reference - might make the message more accessible?

If you can get your hands on the original RS article, their fonts and general design are usually much more artistic than the 12pt Times New Roman of newspapers, might give you more to work with.

I did a mixed media piece along similar lines a few years back, and during the presentation, as I carried it to the front, the thing completely shattered and its various needles/claybits/wires went eeeeverywhere, had to bullshit my way through an impromptu "performance piece", hehehe. Anyway best of luck with the research and *do* let us see the result. :)

This is probably a case of how she can't/couldn't conceive of people judging others in a way that she wouldn't. I do this, too. I wouldn't judge a lesbian for being lesbian, but I was reminded that there are still areas of the country where gay and lesbian people are still victims of hate crimes. Same thing with stealing. Many of use wouldn't steal, so we forget that others will and make ourselves easy targets.

Aquaticsub,
First, let me say that I find what you are choosing to undertake is quite commendable as an artist.
From my experience in creating artworks intended to raise awareness on specific subject matter, I have found a few things that have proved quite successful.
A primary purpose of art is to communicate; convey if you will, not merely an idea, but to invoke a feeling. A feeling being the physical response to our emotions from the input. The results will vary per individual. However, the key, I have found, is that as humans, we ALL share the same set of emotions. Given that, I find my intentions are communicated much simpler and clearer when I show a common relation between the subject matter and the viewer. All things are related. It is this aknowledgement that breaks down the barrier that seems to "compare oneself out" from others, and opens up the option to "compare oneself in", if even on a small level to begin understanding of the artists intention.
Perhaps this may serve as a little food for thought to consider during your project.
Best of Luck.

That's what I think too. She's been doing this a long time and, given the nature of artists to push the edge, I can't believe I'm the first one to go "I want to take pictues of me having sex and paint them" or anything along those lines. She definately isn't uncomfortable with it, though the rest of my classmates were a bit iffy in giving me feedback.

Read Page 69 of "When Someone You Love is Kinky."  It's a letter written by a friend of mine after she was fired from her school job on a reservation because her boss discovered a handful of emails to her Master.
