Does being overweight influence the low self esteem and hence the lashing out at people being overly critical and flaming others in the forums?? Is there a connection? Ross

Nope.  People flame others for all sorts of reasons...I doubt that one's weight has much to do with it.

in one word - no. my self-esteem and confidence is high merely refusing to agree with the "standard norm" way of thinking (inside the box)

rainasmiles -> RE: Does being overweight influence the low self esteem and hence the lashing out at people being ov (3/5/2007 3:36:07 PM)

i am overweight and my self esteem definitely suffers for it, however, as a naturally submissive female it is completely against my nature to be overly critical of or "flame" others here or elsewhere.  i think that weight has nothing to do with it.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Does being overweight influence the low self esteem and hence the lashing out at people being ov (3/5/2007 3:39:32 PM)

People with weight issues have low self-esteem and is frequently the target of ridicule and humiliation. That would more likely lead to a submissive personality and would be unlikely to express themselves in a bullying manner against others.

That is my psychological opinion on the subject.

GeekyGirl -> RE: Does being overweight influence the low self esteem and hence the lashing out at people being ov (3/5/2007 4:14:18 PM)

I was overly critical and had low self esteem when I was 120lbs, a size 3, and winning beauty queen contests.

Now I am overly critical and have low sel esteem even though I am 200lbs and a size 14 and don't look a thing like my old beauty queen photos.

In other words, no, I don't think it has a darn thing to do with anything. If anything, my self esteem has been better since I got heavy because I've been asked out more often and by a higher calibur of guy. For example, I went on a wonderful date saturday with a truly drop dead gorgeous looking guy who treated me like a princess and turned out to be truly kind, intelligent, stable, looking for more than just sex, and all around wonderful. I never met those kind of guys when I was skinny!

My low self esteem is not because of my weight....I think it has a LOT more to do with being abandoned by my father as a child which happened long before my weight problems.

Either way, I have also always been very critical and snippish..and for the record, so is my mother who has never been over a size 3 in her life (and usually is closer to a size1). Maybe it's genetic or has to do with how we're raised?

I am naturally submissive to my sexual/romantic partner but I'm still very much overly critical and have a tendency to "flame". I don't think there's a connection between being submissive and being critical.

I'm 100% submissive to my dom (when I have one). Everyone can kiss big ole white booty [:D]

Ladies and gentleman and distinguished persons of the senate. I would like the following bill attached to this...

Fat Threads of all nature, questions, positions, etc... etc... must have the following addendum included for the stupid.

"The poster being of (questionably) sound, body and mind understands the sloth is not the leading cause of obesity. Many medical conditions exist as well as poor diet and exercise (see medical) that can and will lead to obesity. After reading the aforementioned addendum should I choose to post, I accept all flames, hate filled comments, snide remarks, etc... etc... and the Dommes may use me in lieu of their sub/slaves foe CBT and any other tortures their sick minds can muster."

... How say you?

Many if not all of us are damaged by life and / or the way we were brought up and sometimes that may result in becoming overweight. So in some cases there may be a correlation - that would have to be researched, though.

Being overweight because of hormonal causes or because of use of medication may also correlate with effects of the same on the mind - but that hypothesis also needs research to back it up or to disprove it.

Then there are people for whom a large body mass is natural for their type of people. Nevertheless they may be damaged mentally because they differ from the norm, because people judge them for differing from the norm.

Also there are overweight people who are perfectly happy.

I guess that most disagreements arise because of misunderstandings. There are different types of people with different views of life and reality and because those views do not match and they cannot imagine having another view, they collide violently.

Then there are differences in intelligence, in degrees of wisdom, in the ability to comprehend and to create, in the ability to perform logic, in emotional range and attunement, all of which differences can give rise to misunderstandings and hostility.

This is a complex issue and though there may be some specific correlation with being overweight in some cases, there doubtlessly are many other causes that do not correlate with being overweight and that in fact may show an inverse correlation.

Great, now the fat chicks are being blamed for the forums being snarky as of late.  We also made global warming, poisoned the sea, and don't forget Katrina..... [&:]

I will always say what I think, whether anyone agrees or not, that's not really my problem.  If one prefers to think that I can only form original thoughts based on my weight, I will be happy to give them my opinion when I have taken off a few pounds.  Then we shall see if they can come close to grasping the intelligence of my words as they fly right over their heads.

Crap, there I go again..being snarky.  Bad, bad fat chick, go back to eating donuts in your sweatpants locked away in your house on a Friday night where you belong.

I'm overweight and the only time I flame someone is if they're a total moron who posts something so innane that I can't help but comment. I'd say that the majority of my posts on the forums are either lighthearted or constructive in some way. (at least I hope so)

justheather -> RE: Does being overweight influence the low self esteem and hence the lashing out at people being ov (3/5/2007 4:38:11 PM)

Do people who sell things via links from their forum posts tend to post frequently in order to drum up business, even when they have nothing new, productive or relevent to say?
Is there a connection?

I can't have chocolate, (gave it up for lent), but can still do the glazed... don't worry, I will bring plenty for all of us grumpy fat chicks with low self-esteem...a sugar high will make us more fat, and even happier.[;)]

This is a thread hijack! I like it. Let's discuss this hypothesis instead.

It did occur to me that there is a simple test that the OP may perform. If he is not overweight, he may gorge himself on chips & soda & chocolate donuts until he is overweight. Will it cause him to flame more and to lash out more? Will he suffer from low self esteem because of it?

If he is overweight, he may try to reduce his overweight. Provided that he succeeds, does he flame less and lash out less? Is his self esteem higher?

Please inform us of the results of your experiment in about six months.
