Vendaval -> "Faith in Public Life" (3/12/2007 12:36:14 AM)

Founding

"The 2004 elections brought a resurgence in religious advocacy for social and economic justice. Yet the Religious Right continued to dominate public discourse on issues of faith -- primarily targeting issues of abortion and homosexuality -- and virtually ignoring issues of justice and the common good. In December 2004, national religious leaders – including Jim Wallis, Rabbi David Saperstein, Rev. Jim Forbes, Rev. Bob Edgar, Sr. Catherine Pinkerton, Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, and Rev. Timothy McDonald -- gathered in Washington, DC to confront the challenges facing the burgeoning social justice faith movement. They recognized the critical need for increased and effective collaboration, coordination, and communication on the national, state and local level. The meeting resulted in the creation of Faith in Public Life -- a permanent organization providing critical organizing and communications resources to strengthen diverse faith movements that share a call to pursue justice and the common good."

Hmm and people call Iran a theocracy.

There are no atheists in foxholes, as any dogface soldier could tell you, and neither are there many atheists in politics. Looking death in the face, whether in a foxhole or at the polls, makes a believer of almost everyone. You could ask almost any Democrat. Democratic office-seekers have been to the mourner's bench, and they're drenching their campaigns in religiosity, if not necessarily authentic religion. Be prepared to hear a lot more about the "Religious Left."

I particularly enjoyed Hillary's sermon in Selma.. but what was up with her accent lol  can you say pander, can I get a witness....lol

Normally Dems use religion as a punchline but I guess value voters will be important in the next election cycle.

“Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet”
Napoleon

Only fools don't realise that. That speach of hers is so patronizing though I don't expect religious people to see that. I can't remember who said it but the poor belive in god and the politicians find it convenient. That is so so true and frightening ly so to say we live in the 21st century.

As for there being no atheists in foxholes. Absolute bollocks.

Couldn't agree more. It's bullshit. I bet being shot at in a foxhole have caused a great many theists to walk away from their faith. It's just one more snide insinuation that atheists are somehow incapable of having ethics or morals... that those who lack belief in a deity/deities are incapable of loyalty and bravery. It's false and downright slanderous.

Cheers,
Stella

Sternhand4:
I can't speak for dogfaced soldiers because I never was one.  Perhaps soldier boys need god, I don't. All I needed was a designated field of fire and more ammo.  Two years in I corps and I traded my belief in god for a belief in Sam Colt and John Garand.

I see the post was mistaken,
I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the Dem's running for office. Most of them go to church only for the political advantage. But there are some exceptions. I think Jesse and Al truly believe in their version of faith, as well as others.
Whether you choose to believe or not is up to you. I personally am more of an agnostic. There's only one time when we get to find out if there is a higher power, and you don't get to share your results with anyone else lol

Lordandmaster -> RE: "Faith in Public Life" (3/12/2007 8:43:48 AM)

If that's what you believe, you're not agnostic.  If you were truly agnostic, you'd believe that we might never know, even at death.

Awwww <blush> Yes, happily owned, but very flattered. =) You can pontificate about the benefits of atheism any time with me. =)))

LOL, Stern. =) Believe it or not, there are as many variations of atheism and agnosticism as there are religious paths. Strictly speaking, being an atheist means " lacking a faith in any deity or deities" That leaves room for all kinds of philosophical debate.

I myself am what is known as an "apatheist", lol. Meaning not only do I lack faith, I could give a rat's ass whether there is a god or not. <g>

Stella =)

A woman I was working with and I were discussing relationships, and she got in to trashing her God Squad ex-husband for lacking morals for his profligate womanizing.  She went on to say she could not understand how a Christian would have such a lack of ethics.

I listened to it for a while and pointed out "ya know, it really doesnt take a religious belief structure to possess a strong moral compass."

Agnostic doesnt know about the divine.

Athiest is the negation of the word (think "theology) thiest, which would be a person who believes in a supreme being of some sort.

Clearly a trick designed to set up competing loyalty scenarios that exploit wedge issues that at the end of the day have no real effect on an individual’s life.

for the record

Agnosticism implies uncertainty about the existence of God. The basic problem here is that there are many answers to the question "Does God exist?" However there is only this one term available to cover all of the meanings. Some of today's possible overlapping answers to the question are:

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
I don't personally know.

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
I don't know but will lead my life in the assumption that no God exists.

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
I don't know but will lead my life assuming that God does exist.

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
I cannot give an opinion because there is no way that we can prove the existence or non-existence of God given currently available knowledge.

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
I cannot give an opinion because there is no way to know, with certainty, anything about God, now and in the future.

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
Yes, God exists. But we do not know anything about God at this time.

[image]http://www.religioustolerance.org/_themes/topo/topbul1d.gif[/image]
Yes, God exists. But we have no possibility of knowing anything about God, now or in the future.

popeye1250 -> RE: "Faith in Public Life" (3/12/2007 8:12:14 PM)

Agnostic is when they burn a question mark on your front lawn instead of a cross.
The older I get the more I believe in "God" and the less I believe in religions.

Thank you for that lucid analysis.

I apologize that my comment "agnostics have not made a decision about the whole divine" thing was unclear and failed to fall into the categories listed.
