Anyone who uses the earth's resources by bothering to post to a silly e-group can not be an environmentalist.

Unless your OWN house is perfectly clean, how can you talk about the dirt in another's?

Unless you do not drive, unless you do not use electricity, unless you only wear clothes made of leather, wool, flax, cotton, or linen that you know was cultivated in a natural way, do what is needed to clean your grey and black water before returning it to the earth - you do not have the right to bitch.

If that is in response to me, I will state that I do not believe that being a smoker keeps someone from being an environmentalist, and if you read my first post I stated this blatantly. I stated that there could be an argument that arable land used for this destructive habit could be put to better use.

julia, honey sweetie, baby!!!! It was NOT a response to you!

Just a general response to folk who are looking to persecute easy targets like smokers!

p.s. on a related note, I moved 5 minutes from work and fill my gas tank on Friday whether it needs it or not.  Last year I had to fill the stupid thing every other day.

I saw where Al Gore was catching heat for being a meat-eater and claiming to be an environmentalist (I don't get the connection) then someone at work was wondering if smokers could be environmentalists. Evidently in addition to the gases produced by smoking the cigarette butts choke a lot of birds and small animals. What do you guys think?

I think if the environmentalists start adopting that view, they will quickly lose any credibility they've gained.

Smoke from a cigarette, is nothing compared to the pollution released transporting the raw materials to the processing plant, then those materials to the factory, then that product to the warehouse, and then that product to the store, then the gas one burns to drive to the store and back.

LOL.

I'd say a better question, might be is it possible to be an environmentalist and take part in commerce. I do believe you can but at least it is in the realm of rational debate.

But large scale tobacco growing is very wasteful of arable land and resources

Yeah but so do old coal plants and I think that's a worse direct issue to deal with.

We've got plenty of desert land and other places to farm renewable resources and such to start working on the long term issue.  While I think smoking is an issue, it's pretty low on the list right now.

OOopppss!  Best to use "fast reply" and start off your message by
saying, "To no one in particular".  That is a good way to avoid
these types of misunderstandings.
