Hello. I was chatting to a rather opinionated and defensive sub earlier. She seemed rather set on the definition of a "scene" being scripted while "play" is not. She also stated that everybody she has met from her local community defines a "scene" as being scripted as well. I had always generalized "scenes" as any encounter where people "play" out a scenario, not necessarily scripted. I looked up the definition on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scene_%28BDSM%29 In BDSM, a scene is a complete encounter. It may or may not involve sexual activity. It may help to think of a scene as the BDSM equivalent of what might be considered a romantic interlude or erotic encounter. While what constitutes such an encounter will vary depending on the people, kink and lifestyle involved almost everyone in the community uses the term. A scene can take place in private between two people, or in a club where it can be viewed by an audience. When a scene takes place in public it may be because the participants enjoy the thrill of being watched by others, or because of the equipment available, or because having third parties present adds safety for play partners who have only recently met. There is an etiquette in most clubs which regulates how the onlookers may interact with the people in the scene. Wiki's definition of a "scene" would seem to support My generalization. Am I correct in this? Is Wiki correct? Thank Y/you for your reply(s).

For us, a "scene" usually takes place in a dungeon. It has a set mood, theme, ect. We do "play" during a scene...meaning there are "toys" (floggers, ect) used....but sometimes we just spontaneously "play." Gah. I think I've confused myself.

It's not something i usually do but i said what the hell and did it anyways. i practically gasm from the word flogger (not literally LOL) so when someone came up to me and asked if i wanted to be flogged i jumped on that like white on rice! LOL! i'm also a bit of an exhibitionist so i supposse maybe scening in public had some to do with this also.

for us, "scening" as defined as "bdsm play" happens just about every time we have sex. personally, i don't care all that much for the word, but whenever i use it in reference to us, i use it in that sense.

Both can be used just fine. San Antonio people for some reason seem to say "I was played last night" or "I got played at the party." This is the first time I have heard that particular usage. Always before it has been "I played last night" Play can easily be used as a synonym for scene, though scene tends to be more a singular and specific noun versus the more general open-ended play. If I didn't want to get into the details of a scene, I'll likely say "Yes, we played last night" and move on. So while for me, scene is a specific portion of time taken to enjoy kinky activities with another, play can be used either as a synonym for scene OR as a less specific casual form of "playing around."

Since i am one of the 'true subs', my definition is the 'true' answer. Scene: a planned encountered for BDSM activities. Often starts with negotiation, set up, (the Top may have an idea of where he wants to go with it but it is usually not scripted), the bdsm activity, wind down and then aftercare, and contact the next day or later to do a check in. Play: the actual bdsm activity done. Sometime used to refer to doing a scene as in "Do you want to play?". All the different things that we do, such as spankings, floggings, bondage, or maybe wax play, fire play, pony play. These are all different kinds of play. You can play with out a traditional scene. Since we live 24/7 we play casually often, might be a 5 minute canning, or might be some bondage, or even a few wicks with a flogger,, (good thing i don't live with Michael since i like floggings..), we don't do a scene, just some impromptu play. There you have it, the one true correct right absolute factual approved precise definite answer. No need to search any farther...

Damn! Learn something new every day! Now I know I've never partaking in a "scene", and only "played" throughout the years. I really wish I could plan things out better when going to a club. If I did I wouldn't have to pack what amounts to a steamer trunk because I don't know what I'll feel like doing until doing it. What about impromptu arranged play? Is there a label/name for that? Perhaps "Whose Flogger Is It Anyway?"

I alsways considered a scene as play that had more formal guidlines. While play was just hap hazard. Thus in a math sense scening is part of play but play is not necessarily scening.

Hm, I regard "a scene" as what one does when one "plays." I've heard "to scene," a verb, but I don't care for it. "Scene" can also refer to a BDSM community or group, but it's usually used with the definite article "the" there, and I've never experienced any confusion. Frankly, I've had more difficulty distinguishing "doing a scene" from "having sex." Monica

For me add me in the list of synonyms... Here in the US Pac NW the terms are used pretty interchangably. I tend to use the word play more frequently than scene wether it is impromtu or some very thought out intricate series of events. One thing to note though since the Poly/swinger <yes I know the difference> and BDSM communities overlap the use of the word play may or may not include BDSM where as the term scene may or may not include sex.
