Chiquita to pay $25M fine in terror case

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - "Banana company Chiquita Brands International said Wednesday it has agreed to a $25 million fine after admitting it paid terrorists for protection in a volatile farming region of Colombia."

If they were a person, they'd be sentenced to Life in prison.

I wonder why a Corporation gets to support terrorists, and not be judicially dissolved, and their assets seized?

1 - I always thought that Chiquita meant peel and eat    -    could be wrong tho

2 - Not meant to defend Chiquita but only to try and understand a corrupt system.  My experience overseas has taught me that many many companies (most in fact) pay protection money to whomever is in power and threatens them.   Failure to pay costs them in resources (lives, materials, supplies, etc.).  Sorta like we see on TV where gang warlords take protection money from small buisness or they suddenly burn down or get blown up.  The system is corrupt, but failure to pay may and probably will cost lives.  What is the price for them?

in the 80s i worked at a gay bathhouse in chi. i seen the owner donate money to some policemans organization. i asked him why.  his reply- was thats how biz is run. [they wont come in event we need them..if we dont contribute.....] now that i rethink it it could also be hush money- so as to be warned of any coming crackdown.....[date -time, etc]
so ild suspect- many big cities have the sim type of greasy hands greasing hands.

greasy hands every where. GEEASY GREASEEEEEEEEEE

I saw it first hand when I was in Africa.  We had to grease the hands of the customs inspector (usually a case of beer) or he wouldn't clear our freeze and chill cargo going to the troops.

I couldnt even get my mail in Turkey without paying for it.
And if you got a package....forget about it.

LOL   yeah I bet he was the customs inspector when the Arc of the Covenant was brought through that port by the Queen of Sheba (yeah that old port was where she landed when she went to the Lion of Judah)

When the government does it they call it taxes....when the private sector does it they call it extortion.

Easy solution to that!
You just get all the terrorists together like at a party or something and kill them all. Bury the bodies.
Or, you tell them to come get their money and if only 3 show up you wack them and three more etc.
Any questions by the terrorists you say the others took the money and ran.
Then when they come for the money you wack them.
Problem solved.

You guys are so amusing.  Doesn't the term "Banana Republic" mean anything to you?  In the good old days they just hired the US Marines to do their protection racket but right now Bush has them busy working for the Israelis and Exxon.

In the good old days if  a country objected to our stealing whatever we wanted or wanted to stop the abuse of workers we simply changed their fucking leaders for them, thus the term "banana republic".

Google Smedley Butler, a marine who got a bit tired of being an enforcer for the banana companies.

SimplyMichael:
The marines recieved no extra pay for being enforcers.
Smedley also points out that standard oil and what is now citibank were also his employeers...his opinion was that they had enough money that they should hire their own thugs.  The book is called "War is a Racket"

I used "hired" in the rhetorical sense...
