FelinePersuasion -> Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/15/2007 3:18:19 PM)

My mom says one of these days she's going to smack my dogs nose because he pushes people when he wants to get indoors and you're in the way she says that's how you train dogs, by smacking them on the bridge of their nose. I do not advicate smacking him for any offense exept biting, and then it's one  whack to the butt a very firm NO BAD NOT OK! and then he's put outside. or leaves my presence.

Anyway I told her not to ever be hitting my dog and she said she'll do it if she wants and I won't see it. Can you hurt them by whacking them on the nose?

It only takes two things to train a dog.
A bag of dog yummies and a hammer.

Why dont you just get out of the way and let the dog in.
Simple when you know how isnt it ?

Sorry, tell your mother that, it seems we both may think along the same lines.

seeks, He just rushes in and if you don't get out of the way you might getbowled over, she lets him. He don't bowl any one else out of the way, *usualy* because we don't let him. She don't try to stop him. If I come in and he's not welcome to follow me I stop outside the door point say sit stay and he does.

(Fast reply.)

Feline, I don't know if it would cause damage, but it isn't a good idea. You are moving your hand right in front of the dogs eyes to hit it, which is a -great- way to get bit. A stern "no" works a lot better and it won't make your dog hand-shy. Don't yell, don't try to make your voice all deep. Just look at the dog and say "no" like you mean it.

Try training your dog to wait at the door instead. It's fun. =) When my dog was a puppy, I'd block the entire opening with my body and tell him to sit. When he sits, he gets a treat. Then I tell him to wait. Wait a few seconds, then say "okay" and get completely out of the way. The dog should come in, and then you praise the hell out of it and give it another treat if you want. Gradually increase the time it has to wait before coming in and how far you are from the door (err.. stop blocking the door. I don't know how else to say it.) Shouldn't take long for the dog to learn. My dog won't go through exterior doors and into or out of my bathroom or bedroom unless I say it's okay. He just  sits at the doorway and wags his tail at me until I say it's okay to go through. Since I praise him like crazy for waiting, he thinks it's a huge game.

sparkle he's 15, hehe, he never was trained by us, but I think someone else before us did teach him sit and stay cause he knows it. now if he'll do it is another question lol.

If you tell him to stay out he will. *or he does for dad and I* mom just don't bother to make sure he's not hot on her heels and she gets pushed past.

Just to get the picture, how big is the dog ?

caitlyn -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/15/2007 3:54:00 PM)

If you hit them with a newspaper, probably not. If you hit them with you F-150 King Ranch, probably.

Well, that explains my last 15 dogs.

Sorry Cooper, Trooper, Pluto, Neptune, Bingo, Ol' Yeller, young Yeller, and the rest of you.

Next time I'll use the Miata.

Doesn't mean he can't learn now. My twelve year old cat knows six commands and didn't get her until she was about eight. Since your mom thinks your dog should have better manners, maybe she can take him to a basic obedience class. They're inexpensive and a lot of fun.

Consistancy is really the most important thing. One command means one thing - no matter who says it. Everyone needs to be on the same page or it won't work. Since I'm a huge dork, when my dad kept forgetting the commands his dog knows (I trained him) I wrote all of them down on a dry-erase board on the refrigerator. If there's any confusion he knows where to look.

If you'd like the titles of some great dog training books, let me know. Or, if you'd like, you can borrow mine. =)

Your mother is going to train your dog to fear and defend itself against a hand suddenly coming close to its face.  And what's the first thing people do to approach a dog but reach for it?

The first time your dog gets skittish around someone, especially a child, and bites their hand in self defense, you can ask her to pay your legal costs, and possibly say goodbye to the innocent dog, who may be labelled vicious and ordered destroyed, by law.

(Since she's already warned you that she won't respect your wishes about the dog, I wouldn't leave her alone with it, at all.)

I would recommend finding books or video about dog training, from those who are familiar with the way canines (dogs, wolves, etc.) gain obedience from each other, and incorporate those methods in their training.

When animals are over eager or acting hyper, the last thing you want to do is introduce hitting them as a form of "training."  You're trying to get them to be calm and focused and to view you as their natural alpha.  Then they'll do what you want, as soon as you make it clear to them what it is that pleases you.  They're eager as they can be to please their leaders, in the pack.  Positive reinforcement - associating perks with the desired behaviour - attention, petting, verbal praise, etc, the moment they do something right (sometimes you have to start with a little food treat, too, then move to those behavior perks), is most effective, for training.

Wishing you and your pet a wonderful time, together.  And if your mother disagrees, tap her on the nose.

If your dog is biting you have a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Please make sure no child is ever left unattended with this dog.

If the dog is 15 the dog is elderly ask your mom if that is how she would treat someone in their 90's at the end of their life.

You can't teach old dogs new tricks.  You're screwed.

kisshou he bites sometimes cause like if you have food and you gently push him away cause he's crowding you, or sometimes he bites if you pick him up because you need to say, put him on the grooming table or into the tub. he has temper tanturms basically. He gets very crabby with you at certain times,  like one time he put his feet on the bed and I gently put them down and he growled at me and I got after him and he deicded his reaction would be to try to bite me,  to which I sent him outside. he's usualy very sweet. He does get crabby tho.

I agree she should take the time to train him not to rush past her. If I ask him to step away from the door and let me in he usualy does.

To be serious I think the dog's age coupled with what  MadameMarque had to say point to letting the dog have its way.
One day when he's feeling "off" he may "lash out"

Having said that dogs will "try it on" if they think they can get away with it. Leader of the pack and all that.

pahunkboy -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/15/2007 4:45:36 PM)

HELL NO!

it is cruelity to an animal!!!

verbal prompts firm tones, ur body language, should for the most part control dog.

when my dog is bery bad i yell BADD!  over and over- i point and act real discusted.

gently promp the dog. violence should only be used if the dog is harming a person. THEN you may strike the dog.

Whatchoo talkin 'bout Willis?

Dogs need discipline.  Your Mom is telling you to create some...or she will.

Take control of your animal...
