Actually Lockheed begane acquiring material and signing contracts for the SR 71 in 1962 I chose the example of the SR 71 not because it was the only time we used titanium from Russia but because it was symbolic of the cold war...the fact is that Russia is the primary source for all of the titanium that the U.S. uses in our microtechinical society. The SR 71 is relative minor in its percentage of our use of titanium. Without getting in to the issue about the United States doing things like trading arms for hostages with nations we are having issues with, I would point out that having an enemy in the media does not necessarily prevent the United States from engaging in trade with this enemy.
