With all the Flaming Fat Threads and talk of Diets in the negitive sense I hope to start something on a Positive note.  So many of us, Male and Female fight gravity, inactivity, and extra pounds I thought possibly a thread to encourage, share tips and general better health, and or work out ideas.

I'll start with my own journey.
I have a few extra pounds I am trying to shed.  I've never been skinny.  I've totally wrecked my metoblism by not eating, I'm trying to eat right.  I'm working at targeting my weak areas in the gym but progress is slow.  Somedays life gets in the way and that brownie looks too good to ignore.  My curent goal is to loose 20 pounds and tone up.
I'm looking for encouragment, how about you?

i'm not going to focus on the number or on losing weight (as that is what usually leads me, personally, into destructive habits), but i would like to have a more regular eating pattern (eating more often, and on something more schedule-y, because my eating right now isn't unhealthy but it is all over the place), and i really need to be more consistent about exercise. i do go to the gym when i can - i live close by to our campus one and it's free, and they have good stuff there, so i like it a lot.

i think it would be good to have a supportive thread/group for members to check in with each other on meeting their health/fitness/eating goals. :)

I always plump up a bit during the winter. Less hiking and more comfort foods will do that. In addition, I hate hate HATE gyms. Exercise for the sake of exercise is pure torture, boringggggggggggg. And it just does not fit my lifestyle. I need to fit exercise into my daily activies. Hense having big dogs that need alot of exercise.......gets my butt outside and moving year round regardless of the weather.

I find that spring is a great time of year to get motivated. In addition to the warm weather clothes that will expose more skin I want to be able to take my dogs for a run without my lungs exploding.  Fortunately the fresh produce improves, grapes kiwi strawberries are better and less expensive. Last night I steamed some fresh asparagus, sauteed some chicken breasts in olive oil  and it was AWSOME.

Plus I get outside alot more. Took the dogs for a walk thru the fields enjoying the song birds that have returned, breathing in the spring air. I love nature so the physical activity this time of year is easy, not too cold, not too hot, not too many annoying bugs.

As far as eating, for those like me that hate feeling deprived and hungry, look into volumetrics.

When I moved to Texas, the idea that we had all the food we would ever want, put some extra pounds on me. I'm 5'4" and got up to about 145 pounds.

The diet I used, was to list all the foods I really liked, and put them in order from the most fattening, to the least. You can get books that will help with this. When eating, I would check out the list. I could usually find something further down on the list that would substitute for something really high on the list. This worked great with snacks ... example, low-fat ice cream tastes like shit, but low-fat sherbert tastes identical to regular sherbert in my opinion.

The best think about this diet, is that you aren't eating stuff you hate ... you are picking off the list of things you selected as things you like.

Exercise ... start slow and build up. All I do is run. I don't really enjoy other exercises. I started out doing about one mile, twice a week. I now do four to five miles, every other day. There is a major payoff, because I can eat almost anything now, and not gain any weight.

Rewarding yourself is really important. Find what flatters you and go for it. For me, it was abs. Being small chested, I wanted abs really bad. I bought some huggers and a lot of cool short tops, which forced me to really go for it.

Hope this helps.

I have mentioned my journey before through these threads. (I need to blog it on yahoo or something, for both me and others. When I take time to look at the pictures and the process, I get overwhelmed and them appreciate the changes that I have been able to make.....I have lost 120 pounds since about August of 2005. I would like to lose another 30 to 50 pounds..perhaps...lol )

It has been a curious journey. And I don't know if it has ever REALLY been about the number of pounds or inches or sizes for me.  When I focus on that, I stall.

Instead, I have focused on the process and that it is a process for life for me. I have so enjoyed the discipline that I have found in both eating and exercising.  Lately I have been experiencing grief in a new way....Some of the great new outfits that I have don't fit because I have lost more inches...lol. Change is always painful in some way...even if it is change for the good.

It seems the healthier I get, God (or that creature that moves the chess pieces of this game), allows me to see more reality (usually a big YUCK!)....and that motivates me to get healthier, physically, emotionally, spritually.

Thankfully, I have met a Man that is teaching me to treat myself well. Until this time, I found great solace in taking care of myself like a steward of something that belongs to another. It allowed me to get ready for a relationship.  Now, through his valuing of me, I am learning to value myself.  And that allows me to remove this armor of fat.  But it is still VERY PAINFUL.

Sorry, that I have rambled...I guess that is the mood I am in this morning.

I think that hisannablle's idea of a SUPPORT THREAD is marvelous.  And if anybody is mean in the thread....WE CAN ALL SIT ON THEM!!!

best!

Personally I find forced Cardio (30 min on a bike, stepper or treadmill) punishment.
So I tend to mind phuck myself into doing it.  Somedays I'm more sucessful then others.  I realize that is exactly what I need most right now to boost the calorie burn.

On the other hand I have always loved weights although the repetition does become tedious.  What I've tried to do it pick up new ways of using the same old machines.  Just yesterday I learned to stand up and or squat on the thigh machine to target inner thighs and butt more.

It's been tough making myself go, especially when the only time that really fits on a daily basis is like 0530 and going alone kinda stinks too.  But I am starting to meet the locals now.

I have gained a lot a few people in my lifetime lol.  This time I am taking everything that I have learned and taking the best of each and making one that I can stick with. For me portion control and exercise work best. I eat what I want nothing is off limits and it loses its power over me to want it.  I stopped exercising a few years ago got distracted with real life and just really got back into it. Starting out slow is difficlult for me because I have no middle lol. I am working on that.

My gym (which I haven't been to in months, but plan on getting back to this week) has the cardio equipment facing the free weights.  All the eye candy and my ipod make it bearable.  There's also a bank of tvs overhead that you can plug your headphones into the machine and listen to too.

edited to add...I'll join you in losing twenty.

I have found great success, mentally, with circuit training (I go to Curves). I get in that circle, turn on the autopilot and do what I am told ("move to the next station")...lol

I go in the morning before I am too awake. I go alone, but rarely is there NOT someone else there. But I don't usually talk to others much.

On the machines, I try to work to fatigue on each one (it is only 30 seconds). During the whole time, I process what is going on in my life, what is happening with my growth, with my Sir, encouraging myself to be brave and grow (and shrink  ). But I rarely think about working out as I do it.  Not having to count and know where I am frees my mind to do other things. It is sorta like sceneing.....

best!

I agree.  As a reward to myself, I have done some mineral body wraps this month. It has helped to tone the skin and to make it feel and look glorious...and I have lost inches through that toning.  And for those of us that like that kind of bondage stimulation it is fabulous!  I tell her to wrap me as tight as she can. Then I sit and listen to music and soak up the minerals and travel....again like a scene (I am noticing a trend here..uh oh!).  She comes back and unwraps me, hugs me, and I am on my way. The detoxification effects are marvelous. If you can afford it, body wraps (from a place with a proven track record!!!) are wonderful in a number of ways.

best!

i recently began taking the advice of a personal trainer. (my son recently became certified as a level 2 trainer, only way i could ever afford it)  he has given me some basics that really seem to work for me and i hope they may work for others.  because of the amount of weight i need to lose my workout consists of cardio only for now, to get me moving and losing.  i began slowly (literally about five mins at a time) and gradually built up week by week.  i am now doing about thirty mins at a time with my goal being sixty mins at a time.  although i dreaded the idea of exercise all of my life, i am now finding that the time i spend on that eliptical is very healing and empowering for me psychologically, hard to explain but true.

the other important thing my son has me focusing on is what and when i eat, not so much on how much.  the goal is to speed up my metabolism as much as possible.  he recommends a high protein/low carb diet.  (not no carb)  i eat the bulk of my daily carbs at breakfast, usually a bowl of oatmeal and an egg sandwich. as soon as i feel the slightest pang of hunger i eat a high protein food item. (a foil pack of tuna no mayo, or a homemade banana smoothie with whey protein powder added)  i do this each time during the day that i feel hunger between meals.  at lunch i significantly decrease my carbs by having a fresh or frozen green veggie, another protein and only a half cup portion of brown rice or other not too processed carb.  by the time dinner rolls around  i am eating a serving or two of protein and lots more green veggies, no carbs.  my son stresses that eating a high protein food each time your body signals hunger is important to keep your metabolism going.  the hunger itself is a sign that your metabolism is in fact doing what it should (burning calories)  i know this is a long post, but really wanted to share this with others who might find it helpful.  to date i have lost 28 lbs. and have no plans on stopping any time soon.

Hello Quivver,

Firstly, I would suggest you consult a nutritionist and a professional trainer for a more reliable accounting of what would work best for you.  No two people will lose weight, optimally, in the same way.

I have found that I need to keep my calories at no less than 1500 per day, keeping my lean protein very high (chicken breast, turkey breast and fish... nutritionists say that women should eat fish at least twice per week), keep dairy consumption low, and always low fat, do not consume refined sugars or flours and carefully monitor my sodium and fat type (keeping as many saturated fats out of my diet at possible).  I also do not eat after 7:30 pm, and am very careful to take a multi vit-mineral supplement.

Beyond that you need to drink water, and lots of it. Water boosts your metabolism (or rather, how well it works), and hydration is essential in both breaking up and flushing out the fat in your body, as well as distributing the nutrition from your food to your body.  The minute your body thinks it is not getting enough nutrition, you go into 'starvation' mode and your body actually works double time to store fat.

It is also important (for me at least) to have 'free weekend'.  I do not eat my way through the weekend on dorritos and nutella (though I would love to) but I relax the regulations somewhat, allowing for some goodies.

Work out at least 5 times a week.  Cardio is essential, and if you can get at least 45 minutes in a day, you are doing well.  I like to break my cardio into two parts.  I shave off half of my lunch hour and take a 30 minute brisk (very brisk) walk during the early part of the day, as I sit at a desk all day long, and after work, go to the gym and do a MUCH more intensive 45 minute cardio blitz, followed by 15 minutes on a stationary bike at a moderate (but not leisurely) rate.

Weight training is essential for toning, and also increases your body's capacity to burn fat.  Rotate which muscle groups you work each day, so that you have a resting period for the muscles before reworking them.  After my cardio I rotate between 'leg/butt day', 'arm day' and 'chest/back' day.  Sadly, as I have a lot of trouble getting any results in the ab area, every day is ab day

Stretching is your friend.  After working your muscle groups, stretching is essential as it elongates the muscles, which will otherwise get bulky.  I do some quick stretches before leaving the gym and then do a 20 pilates routine at home.

It probably sounds like a pretty rigorous routine, but by breaking it up with the early walk, and the pilates which I do at home (while my cats walk all over me), I am only at the gym for about 1 1/2- 1 3/4.

But... I am in reduction mode, not maintenance mode.

In maintenance mode, I keep the half hour walk and pilates every day, and do 45 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week, as opposed to 6 and keep the rotation of weights and eat much more freely.

I have an elliptical trainer at home, but used to go to the gym.  I found the best way to do long cardio routines was to have a favorite, upbeat playlist on my MP3 player.  When I would start getting tired, I would look at the next song and think to myself, I can keep going for another 3 1/2 minutes, just to get through this song.  Then the next song and the next.  I had worked myself up to 45-60 minutes on the elliptical.

But I vary the amount of time and intensity so my body doesn't get used to it.   I'm just starting back post surgery, so I have to start slow and build back up.  I'm also getting back on Atkins, and doing my free weights, stretching and resistance.  I have a big goal in mind for the weight loss, but rather than focus on that, I'm gonna go with how I look and feel.  My first goal is for my size 14s not to be so tight, then get back in my 12s and then I'll go from there!

Keep doing whatever you're doing. It's obviously working and forget the person who sent that to you.

I'd like to join in. I get lathargic during winter and I tend to put on weight anyway when I'm single.

I try to start out each morning with miso soup. Only 35 calories and it breaks the fast. Wait 1/2 hour, then eat breakfeast. I notice the days that I've skipped it, I eat more throughout the day, not just the breakfeast. I make up healthier sweets for when nothing else will do.
1/2 container cool whip free. 2 tbsp natural peanutbutter, mix it up and put into cupcake tins. Top each with remaining coolwhip. Put a light streak of chocolate syrup on top. Freeze and yum. Tastes like ice cream version of Reeses Peanut Butter cups with a lot fewer calories.
