So here is a query for a lazy Sunday evening for you all.

What code of ethics do you live by?
Are they based on a particular philosophy, spirituality, or religion?
Or are they yours alone?
Have your ethics changed over time or because of a life-altering event?

Please, no flaming of others beliefs!

I am a seeker of others truths. My truths are based upon what I can see as evidence and my lifes experiences.

I try to never lie - I get caught every time - even about presents.
I try to protect the innocent - this is an impossible thing but I keep trying

my ethics are based very much on the vows i have taken as a buddhist (-some- of which can be found at http://buddhism.kalachakranet.org/resources/bodhisattva_vows.html if you are curious). generally, i believe it's wrong to lie, steal, kill, etc. and make a habit of trying not to do such things. i also hold myself responsible for helping people when i can - whether it's financially, emotionally, with education, or anything.

I'm a Christian, but you could boil my beliefs down to "But now we still have faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love.", and from the Dali Lama: "My religion is simple. My religion is kindness."

I try to be a good person.
I have devoted my entire life to taking care of other's. Caring about others.
Be honest with myself and everyone I come into contact with.
Don't intentionally hurt anyone.

When I was young, it all seemed so simple. My karma ran over my dogma a long time ago though. I try not to do any harm.

Don't hurt others ....unless they are in to it.
Being seen to win is irrelevent.......knowing you got what you wanted is what matters. not what others think.
Wealth is like matter it can not be created or destroyed only transfered from one place to another. If one gains it someone else is loosing it.
Anyone who is absolutely sure of something, knows nothing.
Belief, conviction, faith....... can not replace fact. There are very few absolute facts and most will be disproved / contested at some point in the future when greater knowledge is gained.

I found this over the New Year, it speaks of what I strive for.............

I do not know what a code of ethics even is. This is the third version of this post and I keep hitting the cancel button. I think I have taken one too many anthropology courses and now I know how relative ethics are, I have a hard time claiming a code of them for myself. They are often situational and temporal.

My code of ethics stems from my martial arts training. Never start a fight when you can aviod it gracefully. Never lose a fight when you cant. And never, ever let someone defenseless get bullied becasue you have better things to do. I am fiercely prtective of those who are close to me, but I wil never turn my back to someone who needs defending, even if Id never met them before. White Knight mentality
Aside from that, things vary from situation to situation.

I like that philosophy.
I do believe in revenge though if someone really screws you over.
I waited 32 years to get back at an aunt who abused me when I was young until she was old and frail and then I closed in for the "kill" without compunction or mercy.

Personal ethics: Survival of the fitest. You're either going to make it or not. I'll help a man when he's down but I'm not a charity. I'm a beliver in tough love.

In the USA, the belief was written for the right to persue happiness. If you want something, you have to earn it. I see to many who only beg for what they want. What gives one the right to deserve something they are not willing to work, fight, and sacrifice for? When a begger gets what he wants, how good does he take care of it? Once it's gone, he just goes right back to begging. When you work for what you want, you take better care of what you get. Pride and respect for yourself kick in.

Whatever dose not kill you, makes you stronger. The game of Chess teaches that to win, sacrifice has to be made.

Work Ethic: In the medical field, I've taken the advice to treat every patient if they where my mother. With that mind set, I've kept myself from making critical errors and have always elevated the standards of quality care. Whatever you do, pretend that you're doing it for you mom/loved one and your work will come out just fine.

Religious ethics: WWJD? I'm no 100% bible thumping, Ten Comandment following, Jesus Freak; but I pay close attention to the Golden Rule. I respect others and often start off with a nice greating and words of encouragement. If you get rude with me, then I may change my tone.

Team eithics: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Everyone has there part and failure is not an option. In dominoes, if one falls then they all fall. Chess teaches sacrifice. Sometimes, you have to let a few go to make the team stronger.

Philosophical ethics: Good and Bad. Sometimes I wonder which one is more evil. After all, I find myself doing bad things to accomplish greater goods. Many bad people are known for doing good things to start off with before showing there bad side. I see where I have to be bad to be good and good to be bad. So how bad must Good be in order to defeat Bad in this enternal strugle?

In a nutt shell, these are the eithcs I go by.

Um... Ethics?

Being honest to myself. I don't know if it counts as ethics but one of my personal philosophies I carry on my skin in quotation form: "Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 5, Line 115". "One may smile and smile and be a villan."

The other is don't cry over spilt milk.

I guess my ethics follow Shakespeares words: "To thine own self be true."

I also take military ethics very seriously, being a military brat & all that jazz.
