I believe that all people have a right to have a decent place to live in and call it home. As far as religion goes I am ecumenical. If you don't know what that means, google it. I have a passion for life and helping others have a good go at it. Wars suck, most politcians suck. Give peace a chance.

I'm a Christian. My ethics tend to be based on the Bible and the teachings of Christ, but I may interpret those teachings differently than some other people. I believe in loving other people. Being honest. Living with honor and integrity. Doing the best I can with what I know.

My code of ethics is largely religion based, with a small sprinkle of learning and truth seeking (but not so much that I loose my common sense/base in reality as I live/know it); it's grounding is as simple as trying to take into account honor, integrity, benevolence, or at least minimizes harm, and doing onto others...   M

I try to approach people and situations with love.  For me, that seems to help all the other good stuff fall into place...patience, integrity, individual dignity, protectiveness & advocacy.

However, failing that, either on my part or theirs, I've found that a good swift kick often works wonders too.

My ethics are based on Tao and Christian philosophies.  Basically an amalgamation that I compiled for myself.

My Code of Ethics are spiritual to myself, because I hold myself to them. I do not Lie. I do not Steal. I do not cheat. I figure when it is all done and over, you can say anything you want about me, but you will not be able to call me a lying ,stealing ,cheating piece of garbage. I am a kind person to my family and friends and they know it LOL. I just made my own obituary. I do not burden anybody, I take care of all my responsibilites myself, so my family and friends can use their time to enjoy themselves.

Quivver!! I have that quotation taped to the inside of my computer office room desk!  I love it, too (maybe it is one of those "Pisces things", I know you are one, too)

" To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, act frankly; to listen to the stars and birds, and babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasion, hurry never; in a word - to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, rise up through the common. This is to be my symphony."

G'morning all:

I haven't read through the entire thread for sake of time constraint. In answer to the OP's queries; I do the best that I can at all times. I strive to be fair and consistent always. This is not based on any philosophy, spirituality or religion. It's my common, everyday way of life. Have they changed over time or due to an event? No. I was taught good manners as a child and they've stuck with me ever since.

There is a saying I'm fond of; "Courtesy is the lubricant of a well oiled society.". I wish more folks would practice this idea.

Stay safe, play nice, & share your toys w/ others...

I try to be a good person.
I have devoted my entire life to taking care of other's.  Caring about others.
Be honest with myself and everyone I come into contact with.
Don't intentionally hurt anyone.

I would have to agree with this.  Where it comes from?  A juvenile insistence on fairness and justice for all?  Reading books like the Lord of the Rings and Arthurian legends and the Song of Roland too much?

Or perhaps it was from studying Zen and Buddhism and Taoism and other philosophies in college, followed by years of martial arts training and meditation.

Throw in a study of people and their foibles and psychologies and the like.

Are people the sum of their experiences?

For some reason, I ended up with all the parts needed to do my job as a mock assailant in full-contact self defense.

Go figure.

Do as little harm as possible to others. Always be there for your friends. Grab all the fun you can. =)

Ignore the big issues of our times and therefore reduce your stress level. Never be afraid to challenge ideas. Don't worry about ultimate meaning.. chances are, it's there already.

Its funny, I like the one saying about courtesy being the lubricant of a polite society. It brings to mind a Robert heinlein line that an armed society is a polite society.

I believe in the golden rule, do unto others as you would do would have them do unto you.

Theres a whole lot of stuff that swirls around that, but the idea espoused there is the heart of so much of things for me.

I have some issues with cultural and ethical relativism. It is less anything for or against any one idealogy, but more that I can dovetail my ethics to fit any situation if I try hard enough, which doesn't cut it for me. Relativism means that evrything become acceptable. A sliding value system is no value system at all. In the end, you can define who I am by what I stand for. Douglass Freeman once said about Robert E Lee that the man doesn't wear the honor, that the honor wears the man, an idea that I find very appealing.

He who doesn't stand up for something will fall for anything. All law, all ethics are ultimately personal, I decide what is right/wrong/acceptable in my life, what battles to fight and where to smile and nod. The question is do have the courage to stand for what I believe in, the intelligence to craft my own belief systems and the willingness to take the hits for standing up for what I believe is right. Don't listen to my words, watch my actions, and you will know who I am.

Japan in the 16th century was an armed society and a polite society.

The United States in the 19th, 20th, and 21st century is an armed society and not a polite society.

I dont think arming bears, or bearing arms, actually teaches people good manners.

Just me, etc.

I would argue that medieval Japan was an extremely polite society, to the point of near obsession. Of course that didn't prevent them from slaughtering each other on a regular basis. Not to engage in point/counterpoint but I was doing word association with the phrase is all.

The Gods must be worshipped,
and no evil done,
and right behavior as well as the balance must be maintained.

All life is sacred, everything in nature possesses a soul or spirit, and all are responsible for seeing that this standard is upheld.

 Work with high standards.

 Make an honest living.

Be a good host as well as a good guest.

Excellence - physically, intellectually, artistically, & spiritually

Serve your community.

Maintain a healthy balance of the spiritual and mundane.

Uphold the Truth, starting with yourself. Truth is the life-giving and sustaining power of the universe.

Be sure in your convictions, particularly when judging or accusing someone, but also when debating. Ask yourself: Do you really know the truth of any particular case?

Every action has a consequence that must be observed and you must be prepared to compensate for your actions if required.

I tried that "Karma" thing once, it doesn't work for shit!
Bad people get richer and have it easier in life, mean bastards hit the lottery, and good people get fucked over all the time and suffer for the rest of their lives.
Not a very good track record for the believers in "Karma."
So when does that "good" Karma kick in?
In THIS lifetime, right?

I did not mention karma, mine is an older, bloodthirstier spirituality.

Take a life, pay with the blood gelt of your own.

You make your own karma but oft the fates make their own play as well.

Be content with your own self, strive your utmost in every field and only call to judgment those whose footsteps has brought darkness to your own path.

The Unholy

There is no rest from the unholy:
grubbers after others' dreams;
those who deny; and those, pretend;
vacated souls, befouled with death,
and ignorant of how it seems

or what it means to lie at life,
to falsify our trust and hope.
The unholy are the lost of self
who drag all other selves to dirt,
bound by blood and common rope.

There is no rest from the unholy,
feasters on our needed dreams.
We are their victims, choked by those
who wallow in their chosen mud
made from our blood in deliberate streams.

"See how you wound us!" so they cry,
hurt by truth, that mortal soap
by which they are unvictimized,
and so made less themselves.
"The fault is yours who pay for hope."

There is no rest from the unholy—
uncleansable, or so it seems.
No lime can burn their hurts away,
or teach them to regret
the carrion-eating of our dreams.

(Donaldson)
