All life is sacred and holds the same value. Except in self-defense or defense of another, no one has the right to claim another life, whether it be plant, insect, or animal. I won't even go into the fact that "Humans" are just another offshoot of the animal family, either.

If I am reading this right, you're saying we don't have the right to kill plants.  By that reasoning we don't have the right to eat.  Human beings are indeed part of the aninmal kingdom.  We are omnivores and it is perfetly natural for us to eat animals.  Certainly we should not be unnecessarily cruel to animals but if Bambi, cute as he is, comes within my range -- Bambi is dinner.

I believe in PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals.

Here a guy is saving a polar bear that the animal rights people say he should have probably killed.

Because the polar bear will never lead a normal life. He'll probably be exploited as some sort of attraction. Their habitat is disappearing.  Not much of a future.

Here the Animal Rights people are sueing the Navy on behalf of whales and dolphins because they think the Navy might have injured them.
Whales also are nearing extension and want to figure out if the Navy is harming them.   Why not just try to save both?
The whales and dolphins are in their habitat and just trying to exist.  We are the ones intruding and making them miserable.

Just because we should treat animals with respect and give them rights - doesnt mean they get taken off the food chain.

Just because a human walks into an African jungle - doesnt mean the lion pride there is going to take him off the food chain.

IMO the Native American's had the way of it.

Animal's are also NOT there to SERVE us.  They're there to balance the eco of the planet.

What i cant wait for.......... is when us humans meets a higher species that relates to us, the way we relate to cows.

Its all about respect, really folks.

Never did anyone say "dont eat the cow" "dont eat the meat" "dont eat the plants"

All we, as humans, need to do, is treat them respect.  Respect due to another living breathing life.  Because ya know what - with out all the "life" on this planet.. this planet would be fucking dead.  Maybe humans need to learn to be thankful and learn to appreciate what they have.......... and ooooooooo (tough concept) respect it.

I had a really intelligent post and concept about this wole subject...but I got that weird timeout thing or whatever so it's gone now, so I guess i'll have to resort to my second thought:

You ever stopped to wonder if their arent different 'species' of human, im not talking about races, i mean 'species'. It was found by archeaologists that Neanderthal co-existed with modern man, they were thought to be just humans that evolved but indeed they cross-bred with modern man, Neanderthal man has very different traits, we are NOT all the same and like animals we are also part of the food chain.....of ourselves!!

Some people can kill for fun, some simply can't, if you took all the animals off the earth they would just kill other humans, lok at Iraq for fuck sake, somewhere in the human psyche some people just get a kick out of killing, no reason in particular just satisfaction!

We arent as 'nice' as the media like to portray!

Homids are omnivorous and predatory.  Our eyes face forward
and we have canine teeth.

You mean fertilized?

I don't have a definite time.  I simply don't know.  Do you?

And this question relates to animal "rights" ... how?

Sure, in an evolutionary sense, we certainly are.

So, where do "rights" come from?

And if you want to make the argument that since we are "just animals", what "rights" does evolution give us, or any other animals?

That i am not sure i can answer to be honest. Rights tend to be given to us by govenments. Although moral rights may be religiously founded. Its a bit of a big open question is that one.

On this one i would have to go with that we are all, human and animal, part of one big circle of life, one long food chain and because we are at the top we have the most rights. Probably because we take them.

Since I am just another animal, I only one right, the right to survive, and by surviving like an animal, that means I will destroy, devour, kill, rip, tear and break anything and everything I need to do so, luckily as a species a bit further up the food chain with the ability to create civilizations we dont really NEED to do those things anymore.

Exactly, but humans have become more refined than most animals have. We go to the supermarket for our food - very civilised. Animals kill their own food by the means they can.

The only animals that might have "rights" are domesticted animals that we as humans give rights to. Does a zebra being chased down bt a lion have rights?? i don't think so..

just to reiterate...Bears suck.

Just out of curiosity, what niche do Bears fill really? I mean...they only very rarely hunt so pop control of herbivors cant be it, unless you count Bears eating us, and what? they eat berries too?
