I take the ends off veggies and stems and throw them in a pot with hot water...wala...soup base...same way with meat...if I boil meat i keep the broth, or when I cut up meat I take the bones and boil them for the same. Put the cooled broth in ice cube trays, freeze then transfer to freezer ziplock bags and whenever you need a base for soups or sauses you have it!
Coupons, coupons, coupons. Plus mail in rebates. Take the money you save put it in an IRA and you help yourself out for retirement.
Several of the stores in this area have a 'mark down section' I fondly refer to the 'dent and bent' section. I shop there all the time. You can save up to 50% off the shelve price PLUS use coupons if you have them.
I also have a veggie garden most summers. And a fresh herb garden that mostly sits in my windows. Ends up costing less to grow your own most of the time.
Use gas cards that offer 3 cents off the price of a gallon of gas if possible. Might not seem alot but it does add up over time.
I use the employee discount at the place I work to stock up on dated items. Usually save from 50% - 75% off the ticketed price...plus my 30% discount can add up.
Yard sales, garage sales, flea markets and estate sales are a good way to pick up named brand items in good condition at a fraction of the price. You can also pick up items for resale on the web. I've done that for years to add to the household income.
Have to thank my mom for most of these. I grew up one of those 'working poor' who had to pinch pennies where ever we could. Something that has just stayed with me for years and something my now grown children now do as well.
