I went to a belly dance performance where one of the women was fat -- like rolls of fat fat.  She was fabulous!  At first she was, I think, a little tentative, but after a while she really owned it.  It was very cool to see.

As to dancing in a group, I have seen some dancers wear clothing that offered a little more covering.  Don't let that stop you.

I looked for belly dancing sites today, and all of them their these lithe thin lean sexy women in skimpy costumes. Now I suppose that's because they've been at it a while, but it don't lead me to believe fat people, ever dance.

It's true.  In Illinois fat people aren't allowed to dance...It's wrong!...The story of the plight of these weight impaired dancers was made into a movie....Originally it starred Dom Deluise and was called "Fatloose!"...But Hollywood and it's producers got ahold of the script and made all sorts of changes...Replaced "The Dom" with Kevin Bacon and you know the rest....

....Edited to add...When  I stumbled onto the shores of CM....Dom Deluise was going to be my screen name...Unfortunately "The Dom" as he is referred to by his legions of fans and all women....Didn't think it was such a good idea....So...It is Domiguy.

I belly danced professionally for a couple of years, and took classes for even more years and YES, yes, Y-eee-EEE-ees, there are fat dancers.  Heck there are dancers of all ages and sizes.

In our dance school, we had a troupe of older ( and I do mean older 60 something) women who were pertty chubby and they got bookings all the time.

We've had girls from the age of 12 all the way to late 60's, girls who were clearly heavy to girls that were clearly to thin.  Anyone can belly dance.

There are costumes that hide the belly, in tribal dance most of the body is covered.  There are nettings that can tuck a tummy in if you want to wear the caberet (bra and belt set).

I think every dancer holds her own beauty and grace no matter what her size.  Each dancer brings something special and all her own to the dance, even if she's dancing in a groupe.

If you take a peek at Dondi, a world famous dancer, you'll see that she's a bit chubby (not big just fluffy) and she's gorgeous.  Size doesn't matter in this art.

Personally, I like watching the more curvy girls dance, each move is more defined and graceful.

It's also "funner" to watch a fat belly dancer...They tend to lose their balance and knock over patrons and drink filled tables....It's a fucking hoot!!!

Oh hey Feline, I forgot to mention, if your wanting to start with tapes, check out amazon and look for the old Neena and Veen belly dance FITNESS for beginners, it has all your basic dance moves broken down. It is afitness tape, but it's a really great way to learn the most basic and fundelmental moves in the dance.  Do not buy the actual dance tapes, as those could be to hard to start with.

A lot of beginning classes start with a routine right away and don't break down each move enough to really learn them and perfect them.  I always suggest this tape to new class members.

Yes there are. I can say this because I'm a belly dancer. And quite a few people in my class are overweight, or pudgy. But one can make it move in the most interesting fashions.

J-E-L-L-O its alive!

Belly dancing is also developed to strengthen and enhance particularly female muscles... those of the hips, lower back, thighs and the womb area.  It helps with feminine complaints, toning and strengthening the necessary muscles and body parts.

Basically, anything that is affected by pregnancy, will be strengthened and toned in a good belly dancing class.

Let's go back to belly dance history 101.

Only women considered being of "lesser beauty" took on the  art of belly dancing. The moves, jewlry, and mystery behind cloth made these women more attractive by a males eyes. The idea from the get go was to entice men for marriage. A shimmy is just not the same when you don't have anything to shake.

Maybe it's the fact that I live in a chubby girl kind of area, but almost all the belly dancers in Spokane are 200# plus.

i'm about your size and during the winter, i took a belly dancing as an exercise class at a local park near me.  it was so much fun learning the hand and body movements that i'm planning to take it again soon.

Yes, let's go back.  Belly dancing was something that women did primarily with and for other women.  Some believe that it was prepratory for childbirth.  Catching a man?  Making a "lesser" woman more attractive?  I don't believe so.

Hey Feline~*
i use tapes because i live in such a remote area. The ones i like best are The Goddess Workout Series by Dolphina. GoddessWorkout.com will bring it up. Dolphina is very encouraging and empowering as she teaches.
My current favorite is her Workout With Veils dvd. It works more the upper torso than the whole body, but it's fun and the veils are a nice distraction. It might work for you if your back can not handle the whole body workout.
Just be sure to talk to your doctor. Back problems are nothing to mess around with!

Be Well~*

Women dancing with other women only and preparing for child birth was primarly for the Ancient Egyptian Culture. I was refering more to the Middle Eastern Cultures. Turkish and other middle eastern culture have dominated belly dancing over what the egyptians did. In the middle east, the flashy clothes were to attract while coins worn presented as part of a dowry and sign of eligable wealth. When traditional methods of meeting a man and being married to him did not work, a little bit of flaunting was encouraged.

Google Belly Dance History/Orgin all you want, you'll see that I'm right.
