I love my neighborhood for the wild turkeys in my front yard, and the river next door, For the coyotes and big cats I occasionally hear late at night, For the deer who live with us in town, for whom I must slow down when driving, For the owls I hear and the bats I see; and the big ol’ vultures who roost in the tree on the corner, And for the bears who wander down the street from time to time. On balance, I do NOT love my neighborhood for: The lack of good restaurants, sidewalks and places to buy good bread, cheese or wine, The ubber-conservative politics and religions of most of the people here, For the lack of concern for recycling, light pollution, waste of water and other natural resources; including the killing or removal of the very wild creatures many moved here to be closer to, or that people here think it’s kind to allow their dogs to run loose.
