The US housing bubble is bursting, so I hear? Coming to every street in the UK too, soon. I live in an apartment with one bedroom that has a current market value of c. 80,000 GBP. Whats it worth? About 30k really. To rent this place would cost about 350 GBP a month, ex services etc. A mortgage for 80k to buy it would cost about 500 GBP a month. I also part own the house my ex lives in; 3 bed mid terrace c. 1890. Market value 120k, actual worth about 40k. Rental value 500 GBP a month, mortgage cost for 120k, about 650 GBP a month. Meanwhile, the kids whom we told to work hard at school and get a job etc, cant even afford to buy my apartment. There is a whole bunch of people in their late 20s and early 30s who still live at home with their parents for this situation, with consequent effects on the birth rate. Fewer new people means we will need more immigration - if the house prices are at a level where workers cannot afford them, then how will the immigrants we need be able to live here? They will be given social housing to live in (of which there is a huge shortage in the UK) - thats going to go down really well! Its all mad. And the worst of it is, its all relative! My two houses have gone up in value by over 100,000 GBP since we bought them. But if we sold them, we'd still need somewhere to live and all the prices have gone up too so our extra capital means nothing! That RV is sounding ever more tempting. Except in UK you get classed as a gypsy and pushed out of town wherever you go. E

I rent and would be better off buying but not sure I want to stay here in OK much longer. I pay 425.00 for a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath 1 car attached garage and a large front and fenced back yard. This doesn't include any utilities/extras or yard work....but its not a bad price considering the economy here. I live in a nice area and the house is only 25 years old...a crackerbox but decent none the less. Houses generally go from 60 to 90 thousand in this general area but there are some mini mansions that are upwards of $200,000.00.

a house like that here....would be sold for over half a mill...600,000.00 plus to rent something like that....over two thousand plus everything else you say...yard work, bills all of it...so for 425.00 omg be thankful!!!

Reporting from Atlanta, GA I just stopped renting a 3br 2ba 2car carport house in the middle burbs for around $1100 per month. I moved seven miles further out, doubled my square footage (and change the carport to a garage) and am paying about $350 per month more. A friend of mine bought an 1100 sq foot condo for around $110k last year. You can find townhouses/houses/condos from $75k - $10 mil, just depending upon what part of town you wish to live. The further away from downtown, the lower the home prices get...with notable exceptions of the McMansions. My ex rented a SMALL 2br 1ba apartment in 2004 for $460 per month, but hardly had enough room in it to change her mind. laughing

Detroit is the 'foreclosure capitol' of the USA, you can buy a house for as little as 1500.00!! In my immediate area sales are seriously down, some homes have been for sale longer than 2 years. I live about 90 miles north of Detroit, the tip top of the northern burbs. Their average price is about 200,000.00 and I'm worried I won't be able to sell my piece of paradise even after fixing the house up and prettifying (I made that up) the house n property.

I had my house built five years ago for $138k and my payments are around $1050/month. It's 3 BR, 2 BA ~1550 sq. ft., lot is about a third of an acre. It's all one story with no steps or stairs anywhere, and a nice wide front door. I did that to accomodate my wheelchair-bound family and friends who visit. My neighbor with a similar house listed his house for $177k last year and sold it in less than a month. Now you can't get into my neighborhood for less than $200k. Owning better than renting, especially at tax time.

rental prices in Chicago depend on where and which neighborhood you live - for example they are building new mix income housing (after tearing down old CHA housing projects) near the West Side where studio/one bedroom are $900 a month meanwhile rental prices in Wrigleyville or Wicker Park - studio/1 bedrooms begin at $1200 or up/a month. or in other areas they are renovating old factories/warehouses and converting them into condos with a starting price of $250,000 to $350,000 for one 1 bedroom. where i live, my rent for my 2-bedroom basement apt is $550 a month - rental around here is between $450 to $600/month depending on how many bedrooms you have. most here have section 8 or other housing assistance. recently certain neighborhoods had their property re-assessed by the city and county - expect rental increases soon.

I live right in the heart of my town, and for my apartment (the first floor of a house) we pay $1700 a month plus utilities (about $100 for cable and internet, then anywhere from $80-$250 for heat and electric, depending on the weather). We have 3 BRs, 1 bath, Kitchen, Dining Room, LR and a very very small porch with fenced in yard. No where to park the car though. My friend who lives out near State College, PA just signed a lease on a 3 story, 3 BR, 1.5 bath, kitchen, dining room, LR, basement and garage for only $650 a month. It's a freakin' scam out here, I tell you.

One bedroom apartments in Omaha, NE are about $500 a month. Two bedrooms, are about $600-700 a month. Houses w/3-4 bedrooms and 2-3 baths, fireplace, garages w/room for 2-3 cars, and a patio or deck, in a nice but not super-luxurious area, range from about $120-275,000. My house appraised at $175,000 last Fall at (it's in an older, but nice and very safe area). My renovations may bump that up slightly (not sure yet) - it has 4 bedrooms, LR, kitchen, DR, den, office, 2-1/2 baths, a nice deck, and a tandem garage. The really luxurious homes here cost anywhere from $400,000 on up to $700,000-$1,000,000. - Susan

Question - whats the average wage/salary per annum in the US please? This will give us Brits something by which to compare your housing costs vs salary. UK average wage/salary is around GBP 25k per annum (before c. 25% deductions at source for tax etc) Meanwhile, where I live 1 bed apartment 80k - 3 x average pre tax salary (formerly the max possible mortgage was 3 x) 2 bed apartment 100k - 4 x average pre tax salary (about the max you can sensibly get a mortgage for now) 3 bed house 120k-160k - 5 to 6 x pre tax average salary E

Having never rented I can only go by what I see in the newspaper. There are old farm houses that seem to go for 300-400 a month. Doug was talking about getting some rental property...but our house payment would be around 2500 a month if we owed the full amount. How can you charge someone 2500 a month when they can go down the street and get a run down shack for 300? Even in the larger cities houses seem remarkably cheap around here. Lincoln and Omaha you can buy a brand new never lived in house for 120,000. Coming from California where you couldn't even rent a condo for that much. I still have sticker shock. If it hasn't changed in the last few years I think the last time I knew anything about average wages was between 38-40 thousand a year. I know in NE it is 35 a year. Been reading a lot of statistics lately trying to get a better feel for the place.

i rent a two bedroom two bathroom flat on a third floor apartment building. has weight room two pools garage. allows one small dog. rent $$2835.00/month, electric av $$300.00/month , gas av $$100.00/month , water/sewer $$150.00/month, phone $$200.00/month, TV/cable/internet $$300.00/month. all in the lovely picturesque mountainside of rancho santa margarita perks? living with neighbors who are doctors lawyers nuclear physicists downside? cops literally beat a man to his death for hitting his head on the driver side window of his own car..granted he had poor coping skills with regards to the verbal altercation he had with his wife. but my question is.....who had to poorest of coping skills? he or the cops? quote: ORIGINAL: Vendaval Greetings A/all, What are housing and rental prices like in your area?
