I think the difficulty is that you are trying to define something that is an acronym. Split it down to the words and you already have your definable qualities - it speaks for itself.  The whole thing about consent/powerplay/needles/mentorship or other items etc are tools and not just confined within BDSM itself.

Ofcourse they are tools, i dont think anything is purely unique but merely a group of qualities melded together. I am just interested because it seems to encompass a vast community and within that community perhaps certain people live their lives by that code.

I am sure there are people who live by a code, but not a BDSM one.
Just because you spend the day in a chastity device, does not mean you have to identify as a BDSMer.

BDSM is a sub culture.  Within it are different elements, maybe for example - MS or Ds... now those have more of a specific 'code' if you want to call it that - those being a dominant and a submissive in a power exchange of some sort or another.  Some people live that.  But even within those - there are unique paths.

If you really want to single out what makes a BDSMer think they live a BDSM lifestyle (a term I loathe) then it is the individualism is what singles it out - the one thing you dismissed slightly.  Most people here have said it is an individual choice.  If you want to know what makes BDSM - BDSM it is individualism.
But then, isn't that still present in other 'Lifestyles' too?

You cannot define an acronym, only the words that the acronym stand for.
Bondage/Discipline/Sado/Maso
Those are in an acronym, the definitions already.

You misunderstood or perhaps my choice of words are poor. In order to be attracted to something there must be qualities for that attraction. I was seeking whether BDSM (i use that term to encompass everything) has an appeal deeper than just clothes and fetish, whether people live by those rules. I know each and every person has an individual core this goes without saying but i am really talking about the D/s element to how people live.

I know a lot of people dont choose it it chooses them so to speak, the needs are met by the entirity of BDSM and therefore they cannot live without it. Many people who come on this messageboard for example don't just do it because they wish to meet new people but because they identify their needs which are sated by others who understand what BDSM means to them. I entitled the thread 'is BDSM a craft' because if you look at other ways of life as a doctrine or code to live by BDSM in my view would class as a structured belief system. People worship the power of other people who understand it. Just an observation.

In which case, I would state that BDSM isn't so much a craft - but a religion in a sense (wonders if Merc will back me up here ) .  But this isn't democracy or communism -  there isn't a creed or a code apart from the notion of consent.

But consent is not purely a BDSM 'notion'.

Now, if BDSM is a craft, I would say as an artist myself - only if all the people involved where inventive and artistic... and that isn't the case for everyone.  There are specific crafts within BDSM - like single tail whipping, caligraphy, needle play - these are all crafts and the people who do them are like picasso or adams and it all depends what from you are into as to whether they are worthy 'craftsmen' or not.
