1)     Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?
I shop both in Houston and online.  If My sub heads for San Francisco again though, I'm sending a list along with him.

2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?
You bet I do!  The store where I shop is not a location that I'll be running into anyone I know other than lifestylers, anyway.

3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section?
Heck, no. I might be the only Domme, though.

4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in? Nope, I'm not interested in other's orientations, I'm there on a mission.

5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement?
Implement or fetish wear.

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before? I wait until I'm ready to try it out.

7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so? Because I can't find what I'm looking for at the shop.

8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service? No.

9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own? No, I prefer to buy ready made toys that appeal to me. Technology and research are wonderful things, you never know what they're going to come up with next.  I improvise with things all the time, but we're talking about toy shopping here. ; )

10) Any more areas of shopping with points to ponder? Actually, yes: I'm disappointed that the shops are beginning to focus more on costume wear and less on truly beautifuly sexy clothing.  Looks like I'm going to have to go to Las Vegas, Chicago, New York to shop for corsets, legwear, etc.  So sad.  Another little teenager's school girl get up is not what I need; give Me serious beautywear for the boudoir.

** Edited to add bonus question**
What is the last toy you bought? The Aneros Maximus.

1) I do shop in my home town but like to go to larger cities when possible...selection is just better.

2) Oh gods yes I have, several times. I seem to have this knack of embarrasing and educating someone on whatever it is they are looking at, at the same time.

3) Usually yes, and I'm a hands on person as well, so I tend to pick things up and inspect them at length. Some of the sideways glances I get are priceless.

4) No I haven't. Guess their orientations really don't matter. We are all there for about the same reason.=]

5) Oh implement for sure! And I usually walk out with a bag full of them!

6) Nope, wait till I get home so I can inspect it for defects then I usually clean it and put it up till I want to use it.

7) I shop online because there are certain things I know I can't get at a local store.

8) Yes I have and for me the service was pretty good. Never had a problem with exchanges or refunds.

9) I perfer to buy or have someone make them for me.

10) Wow...seems everytime I go shopping no matter where I am I always look for 'toys'. Walmart lately has supplied me with fodder for my over active imagine and helped me expand my 'toy' needs.

Bonus question:  A feeldoe!

yes as soon as I can

hmmm, and are toys tax deductible, itemized as an educational expense?

I -wish- they were tax deductible!
I buy them either through some reputable online vendors, through a few local craftsmen/BDSM folks, or through a fetish shop in town. The shop doesn't have many toys other than vibes, it's about half that and half lingerie, soooo if I am buying anything else, yep, I'm usually the only one in that section!

I guess I've always been lucky enough to have great stores and vendors available to me- DC has their Leather Fleamarket twice yearly for a few years now, Boston has their Fetish Flea, MD & DC have a few good toy stores, PA has New Hope, even TX has events with vendors.

Mostly I see what others have, see what's out there, get cozy with a few vendors so I can know what really is the good quality and good prices of availability and then pick as I go.

I do online for price comparisons and window shopping, but I doubt I'll buy anything but clothes from the net because I'm just too picky.  Although I did buy a cupping set for a friend online.

I'd say treat buying toys as if you were buying very good kitchen appliances or electronic equipment.

There is no place to shop in my home town. There's a naughty lingeree place across the river. But the one time I was in that plaza and saw it, they weren't open.

Mail order for some stuff. Tack shops for others. But not the tack shop I normally use, they would know it wasn't for the horse! He has a fondness for kitchen shops; wooden spoons, wooden spatulas, chopsticks, wooden skewers - all totally innocuous looking and nasty when applied to my poor abused body.

Hair brushes make good paddles, buy them in any drugstore and burny stuff too like listerine strips, cinnamon strips etc.

Dowels and rope from any big hardware store, cable ties there also.

1)            Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?

Some things I have purchased locally, but I used to fly out to the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle) all the time to pick up toys.  I’ve had my share of encounters with Airport Security.

2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?

I have sent people I was involved with to stores specifically to pick up things, ask questions of the ‘help’, and make purchases, but for me I generally know what I’m looking for without much discourse.

3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section?

Generally, although if we’re talking films, anything I buy these days is generally online, and I have enough toys to ‘stock’ most stores

4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in?

Are you telling me there are other people in the store?  Wow.  I never notice.

5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement?

Used to get magazines – these days it’s limited to the major European fetish magazines and you don’t get those in adult stores.  Video’s not so much any longer.  Implement probably under the ‘most likely’ category, but I already have so MUCH.

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before?

I can wait.

7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so?

Selection.  Price.  Buying things in stores can be outrageous if you don’t know what ‘fair market value’ is.

8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service?

No.

9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own?

Buy.

10) Any more areas of shopping with points to ponder?

Sorry.

Have fun!
curious

Actually, the last thing I ‘obtained’ was free.  I was looking for latex gloves (for fisting, of course).  They don’t sell them, but as the particular store had a separate area for dancers, I guess they have some about.  I ended up with a full box and a half.  (I guess I’m set for a while in that regard.)

About 4 miles down the road.

I will ask if I have questions.

I've seen others looking there. It's a small store and the bondage items are in a corner.

No

It varies, sometimes video or implement, sometimes lingerie

I seldom shop online because daughter would ask what that package is when it arrives.

No. My first butt plug was way too big but I just tossed it.

We buy some but mainly use household objects.

Any more areas of shopping with points to ponder?

How about our first trip to an adult store. I was at our condo in Hawaii by myself years ago and found a very nasty video hidden in a cupboard that a renter must of left by mistake. I put it in and it made me so horny that i headed to the sex store and bought my first dildo, the beer bottle just wasn't cutting it. I did have a vib at home that Hubby had given me but it wasn't with me. That was my first time in a sex store and I had no idea what to get, just grabbed something that looked useful and got out of there as fast as i could.

1)     Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?

i live in a pretty small metro area, so there isn't much around. The "adult" stores are mostly porn, with some vanilla toys and token BDSM gear. But, when i travel to a bigger city, i like to see the sights

2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?

No! Don't talk to me! *eek* Although when i've gone to kink-specific "vendor fairs", i'll talk to people

3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section?

Usually... if not, i'll find an empty section and wait for the other people to leave.

4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in?

More like the reverse... take a look at someone coming in, and try to guess what they'll go fore.

5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement?

Implement. i'm a modern, high-tech, cheap individual... i get all my porn off the Internet.

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before?

Yup!

7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so?

Getting something i can't make or find locally.

8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service?

Nope, although there's one thing i should have

9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own?

i do both... some things i can build (heavy leather/wood/metal gear), some things i can't (insertables, clothing, finely finished leather gear)

What is the last toy you bought?

We went to a vendor fair and collected a whole bunch of things at once, mostly acrylic canes and other striking implements

1)     Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?  My hometown, but it's a large city and no shop is nearby.
2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?  I want to be served, so yes, I do communicate with people in the store.
3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section? No
  4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in? No, unless he's good-looking. Just a fantasy, I'm not interested, but everyone can dream.
5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement?  I buy toys
6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before?
  No
7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so? I don't because pâyment is not secure.
8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service? No
9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own? I buy thing, and my slave makes others.
  10) Any more areas of shopping with points to ponder?  No

1)     Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?
our hometowm is a tiny rural area, but that means good tack stores!  Nice for all sorts of stuff from crops to panic snaps, curry combs to chains and ropes.  In the largest place close to us, yes we ahve shopped in the adult toy stores there as well.

2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?
I have and do and would talk to other customers and or clerks, the thing i get red faced over is when they open a vibrator and out in the batteries to prove it is in working condition!

3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section?
nope not at all
4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in?
I am terrible at guessing that so I gave up trying.

5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement?
impliment

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before?
wait til i get home or want to show it off to someone
7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so?
we bought VW on line because it was easiest thing to do and get the one we wanted.

8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service?
no

9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own?
we buy and make, I love making and have made a lot of things, even "tought" toymakers workshops

What are curry combs and panic snaps?

Thank you.

I'm not overly familiar with west coast events other than Folsom, but here on the east coast, there's a huge fetish flea market twice a year in Boston, and another twice a year in DC.   Also, just about any BDSM convention has vending, and you can get a pass just into the vending area if you don't want to go to other convention going's on.

If you are on some local Yahoo groups, you can probably ask there what may be reasonably local to you.

I live in a very large city (Atlanta), and I am a novice but also familar to many of the people in the fetish scene here (I'm a rave promoter, and I usually throw my events at a fetish club that I rent out and am fairly friendly with the owners, and the rave/fetish scenes are somewhat intertwined here, especially for the under-30 crowd).

So I've done my share of shopping in the last few months after I got out of my vanilla marriage (long story) and especially since I met my girlfriend/sub (I'm still trying to figure out how I got lucky enough to meet somebody casually who *bam* shared my interests in BDSM and aproached me first about it) and I don't try to hide it. In a city of five million, the idea of running into day-job coworkers isn't a big worry (and I do my shopping mostly at Atlanta Leather Company, which is pretty much fetish-dedicated anyway). My day job is a very conservative company, so I don't think I'm going to run into coworkers, if I do, they're there too, and I don't feel like I have anything to hide.

Never really tried to guess about other patrons...atlanta leather has a mostly gay clientele anyway. I've done a little shopping at stockroom.com and bdsmtoybox.com ... had good experiences with all three of these outlets.

in reference to #5, I usually buy implements...why waste money on porn when I can buy things to entertain my girlfriend... I just bought a set of leather ankle and wrist cuffs that cost me half of my last bonus check...but well worth it.

Anyway, I hope that answers your questions from me...even if it was kinda scattered. But I think that pretty much answers the important stuff.

They also have a couple of fetish flea markets here...i just went to the fetish fair fleamarket a couple of months ago and bought a flogger...and got a Cecilia Tan book autographed! Amazing fetish erotica writer if you like the written word.

Oh, and to answer #9, I buy instead of make. I don't have the knowledge and it's easier just to buy stuff that looks fun.

It’s a mystery to me how everyone does their shopping for toys…

1)     Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?
I shop in my home town and online. Online because I can order out of the states and with shipping, duty, and exchange rate I still pay less. Go figure

2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?

Yes to all, do it quite often actually. Embarrasses the hell out of my nilla friends when they are with me

3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section? Most the stores here only carry the light "play stuff"

4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in? no

5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement? implement

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before? If I was shopping alone no. When i shopped with my former Dom, for some reason stuff alway got opened in the car.

7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so? More selection and cheaper

8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service? Never had anything broken

9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own? Buy. I'm not allowed to play with sharp objects

10) Any more areas of shopping with points to ponder?

What is the last toy you bought?

hmmm, and are toys tax deductible, itemized as an educational expense?

It’s a mystery to me how everyone does their shopping for toys…

1)     Do you shop in your own hometown or travel a bit down the road?

2)     Do you start a conversation with the patrons in the store? Would you continue a conversation on how a toy works or operates with a clerk or patron or were you prefer not to be noticed?

3)     Are you usually the only one in the bondage section?

4)     Do you ever try to guess other people’s sexual orientations by the section they are in?

5)     Would you most likely buy, paper, video or implement?

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before?

7)     If you shop online, what are the reasons you choose to do so?

8)     Have you ever had to send something back because it was broken? If so, how was the customer service?

9)     Do you not buy any toys and prefer to make your own?

10) Any more areas of shopping with points to ponder?

1) O/our hometown doesn't have a toy store that W/we know of so W/we do go to other towns as well as shop online.  O/our two favorite sites are JT Stockroom and Extreme Restraints.  Most of the "local" stores don't really have very good quality BDSM gear.  There is a place in San Diego called the Crypt that has good gear, but caters mainly to gay men.

2) I don't talk to the other patrons mainly because I don't know if they would be comfortable with it and I really don't need to ask them anything.  I have spoken to the store clerk and even gotten various advice but nothing major.

3) The local stores don't really have a decent bondage section.  It's just the cheezy stuff for the vanilla's who want to think they are kinky.  However, once in a while they do give me or Master some ideas to go look for online

4) No, the only time that thought even crosses my mind is if it is someone I think I would want to have sex with.

5) video (if there was anything decent) book (again if anything decent), usually what W/we are there to buy are basic dildos, vibes, plugs and lube.

6) Depends on how excited I am about it and if Master says it's ok.

7) W/we normally buy leather BDSM gear online because the quality of the merchandice is much better.

8) Nope

9) Nope, although W/we do also do some shopping at the local hardware stores

10) No, but I did recently find out that one of the local casinos won't allow you to bring dildo's into the casino

Bonus Question) Suction cup Dildo, lube, good head

Sincerely,
minxy

Similar to my general clothing, etc buying I tend to buy only from certain places (I'm a loyal buyer).  Mostly it’s direct from particular leathermakers.  I shop a little bit at the local kink store and also a little bit at the Boston Fetish Flea market.

At the local kink store I almost always run into people I know, so sure I’d talk to people if I know them.  Also the local kink store has a lounge area with coffee and sodas and free wireless internet so sometimes people hang out there and talk.  I know the people that work there (as well as the owners of the store) so if we go there we’ll talk to them also.  I guess my owner and me are just social butterflies.

I don’t go to vanilla stores that sell kinky stuff (except for the very rare stopping by for random stuff like lube), but the few times I’ve gone I don’t remember being the only person in the bondage section.

  Nope.

I’m not sure what paper is?  I don’t buy videos because I find BDSM videos to be really just… ridiculously boring and silly (and usually devoid of eroticism and/or male/female fucking).

6)     Do you open the product immediately when reaching the car, even though you just seen it minutes before?

No.

I don’t shop online.

Nope.

My owner makes stuff (he makes paddles that he sells, and has also made a posture/choking collar and some other stuff that we use).  I can’t make anything and I’d rather buy something made properly then spend hours making something that looks crappy.

I don’t think I’ve bought a toy in years (my owner typically buys the toys and we have a LOT of toys), but the last kinky thing I bought was gay SM porn.  The last toy was probably a violet wand about four years ago.  The last toy my owner bought was a fairly small slapper/stingy toy a couple of months ago.

Edited for wonky formatting.

Oh my, how did that come about? inquiring minds want to know. I've worn my butt plug to our casino.
