Aneirin -> Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 2:02:04 PM)

Apologies if this question is the wrong place, but could not think where to put it.Those who administer this site please feel free to move it to where it should be.

From time to time I create things BDSM from various materials,I have it in my mind now to extend my carving skills into carving things BDSM,namely wood objects for use and pleasure within the human body.My question is,safety being of a paramount concern, does anyone have any information as to what hard woods may be used for this purpose, has anyone any experience or knows of others using wood for items of pleasure?

BondageTopJere -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 2:08:51 PM)

All wood is porous to some degree or another, so none can be considered safe from picking up whatever biological odds and ends in human cavities, so none are truly safe in that regard. Same reason why they stopped using ivory many many years.  However, if only one person is going to be using the object in only one paticular cavity over its lifetime, not so much a problem.  If your going to want mulitple uses out of it, it will have to sealed using some kind of polyurethane, peroid.

WhiplashSmile -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 2:23:30 PM)

Same type of wood used for Surf Boards,
just polish it up with Sex Wax!

Aneirin -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 2:24:33 PM)

I intend to use only dense hardwoods, though a sealant of some kind will be necessary, wax or other. But I know some hardwoods can be poisonous to humans in that they may irritate or worse,Gombeia,a wood I am playing with at the moment is one of these,it,it's wood dust causes severe irritation of the throat and nose,a burning sensation, even with a dust mask,it is my concern to avoid woods like these, but would a sealant nulify these properties?

mnottertail -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 2:26:44 PM)

Don't take the chance, why?

But seriously, safe woods have been discussed alot on these threads some swear by them and some swear at them.

Red, Yellow, Green are common safe woods.

I would stick with furniture hard woods. They are tried and true. Maple, many oaks, cherry wood, walnut, black walnut, purple heart would be very cool but I would talk to an industrial technologist first.

Oh! Shoot a c-mail to SimplyMichael, he is an industrial tech! That is the man to talk to!

Sounds like a good question for Bob Vila !!!

Obviously, you want something fairly dense, and lacking in splintering as possible. I've made several insertable toys myself out of poplar, and one or two out of a fairly exotic wood used for pattern-making. All of them were given about 30 coats of clear acrylic. BTJ is quite right however, the bio problems with wood make it rather limited in its use. (The same reason tounge depressors are disposable at the Dr.'s) Not to mention, wood's inflexibility tends to make it somewhat dangerous for internal use. (The toys I made were only around 4" long, meant for anal and use in the mouth.) Frankly, there are so many other materials out there that do a much better job. Casting latexes, RTV silicones, etc. Now, on the plus side, wood is wonderful stuff for use outside the body: paddles, kink furniture, restraints, and even things that cause discomfort like a straddling horse, with an inverted "v" saddle...

i would agree, except for purple heart... most of your "exotics" tend to be toxic to some degree, although i can't say for certain about that one. i'd probably use maple or walnut.

The woodworking supply shop that i go to has a particular type of food-safe sealant that is designed for use on turned wood salad bowls. i can't remember the name of it, but that is what i'd use for insertables.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 3:01:50 PM)

There are also some very yummy floggers on the market which have wood handles specifically meant to be "dual purpose" :)

WhiplashSmile -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 3:18:56 PM)

If your sub/slave is allergic to something such as Hickory, I would avoid it.

I have built aquariums on occaision.  Fish are a lot more susceptible to environmental contaminants than human orificidae.

Food grade resin will cover everything in a coating that nothing will cling to, hide in, or be able to leech out of.  This would be the resin that comes in 2 parts, epoxy and catalyst.

Enjoy!

I'm not sure about the different types of wood but it seems a simple answer to your problem wood be lol use a condom. No matter what kind of wood you use or what kind of finish you use it would still make sense to use a condom that way cleaning would be much easier

domiguy -> RE: Human safe wood? (3/25/2007 7:19:10 PM)

Sounds like a job for balsa.

Hahahaha...I thought this was a typo.  safe word...safe wood.
Silly me.  Imagine my surprise when it's all about the wood.

Agreed, I'm a chemical engineering student so this question really stuck out for me.  I can't think of any finite answer sadly, since almost all sealants and woods themselves can be potentially harmful =(
