As most anyone can tell female dominants give themselves different titles. Some are more prestigous (spelling?! ACK!) then most. Some are very simple. Here are the titles I've noticed:

~Goddess
~Ma'am
~Lady
~Master (in MasterFireMaam's case.)
~Mistress

So, my question is why do you call yourself such? I chose Lady because to me (imho) "Goddess" seems too haughty and above everything. I am not. "Ma'am" is nice for military play and that style of discipline, but I like to think I am far more gentle. "Master" is uh... Well, MasterFireMaam was the first I'd seen it use in the context of female domination. "Mistress" is too... perfect?

I chose Lady because the type of dominance and particular style I would like to exemplify is that of a loving, caring, strict and gentle woman. What better then Lady?

As always, LA link me up if I've reposted. Because I can be goofy like that.

I didn't read the whole thread, but this is a question I'm asked every now and again, so I thought I would jump on board.

Of the list, I tend to use three.  Ma'am, of course, just in common respect or to those who do not know Me well.  It's highly accepted anywhere and has no real ties to it.

My title of Mistress is My actual preference, but it is reserved only for those who serve Me directly or have known Me and become close to Me.  It is saved for those that I bond with on deeper levels.  In some cases, it is expanded a bit to Mistress (insert real name here).

Lady Pact is the one that I use most often.  It was bestowed on Me by friends because of My personality and character (and after I told them that the name Mistress was reserved for other things).  I consider it a name/title of honor.

My screen name is reflective of My skin colour and the way My sub describes Me.  He sees Me as his Goddess and he often takes time to explain why.  He is Wiccan and he is used to using the term.  I do not consider Myself haughty or a deity, and I agree with GoddessDustyGold, it is the role I see Myself in more often than not.  During scenes I prefer Domina, or if with My boy - Mistress.  As for the others...

Ma'am - nope, can't stand it.  Makes Me feel about 500 years old.

Mistress - is only for the one boy I own.  No other submissive may use it.

My Lady - the boy loves to use this one, and I love it too.

Domina - this is the title I prefer above all besides Mistress.  It is generic and it holds such power.. "Lady of the House" is its simple translation.  Plus it was used by the Romans and they were such sexy, complicated creatures...

Padrona - this means Mistress in Italian...it was used by an Italian submissive I once owned.  Loved it every time I heard him say it.

With kind regard,
~Kara

I have gone by the name "Mia" for about 10 years online, I really don't care to use my
real name on the internet.
I have always been for women's rights so Mzzzzzz goes along way with me.
I ONLY want my special little one to call me Mistress, so that is my story!
Also by the way I don't mind being called Ma'am, I actually enjoy it.
It is just a sign of respect, so my little one can call me Ma'am or Mistress.

Greetings,

Well, online I'm usually Ms Wickad or Wickad as ... well, that's my online handle - lol.  I started my online life as 'wickadchick' and gradually that morphed into 'Wickadchick' .... then 'Wickad' ... .then 'MsWickad' because I kept getting called Sir by so many folks - lol.

In day to day interaction I go by Deborah or Deb as that is my given name.  If a boy wants to start a conversation with the intent that this is a D/s discussion a good way to address me is 'Ma'am' or 'Ms'.  I'll never be a 'Mrs.' as I refuse to be defined by my connection to any man and 'Miss' ... well, I don't see myself as a child any more either  - lol.  I really do hate when people I don't know call me 'Mistress'.  I feel that 'Mistress' is a term reserved for those people I have a negotiated arrangement with.  Thus, if I collar someone they address me as 'Mistress'

I must admit that I am in a state of flux about the word 'Mistress'.  On one hand I do understand that it is the feminine of 'Master'  but ... it also has so many connections with dis-empowered women that ... I find it hard sometimes.

I dont actualy have a title I prefer (except Mommy, and thats ONLY with Angel)
Though I can deal with Maam, I just dont really care for them. Angel used ot use Goddess, and I am ok with that one as wel becasue of how much he lied the wordplay of our titles. Goddess and her Angel still works well for us.  And sweetly enough he got me a Goddess teeshirt to match his Angel tee shirt.

But yeah, enough babbling.  Those are mine

I prefer Lady as well.  I tend to be a gentle domme unless provoked so it suits me just fine.  And I agree with those of you that said Mistress is more for a submissive you own 100%.

Ma'am is seen as rather American and not common here at all.  Some subs use it but My Lady is more common.

No-one in the local scene expects other people to call them Lady This, Goddess That or Queen Anything.  Its considered pretty naff (dorky) to introduce yourself that way at a BDSM event (and a dead giveaway that you are a newbie from the chatrooms).  Dominants just use their real first name or a one word nickname eg Cyppie, Ariel, Jewel, Blue, Fourchette etc

There's one exception- everyone calls the pro-dommes "Mistress".  Its done in a respectful way

In private, my partner only ever calls me Mistress.  Nothing else.  Once in a distracted moment he called me "honey" and that felt really strange.  When we go out pretending to be an ordinary couple (say at his parents for dinner) he uses my real first name (and nothing else).  I call him sweetie, love, honey, baby, gorgeous.......a million terms of affection :)

Edit to add - btw we live together as a monogamous hetero couple.

I have found that I prefer just "Miss" or "Miss Katt" when being spoken to. Ma'am seems too stuffy/older as Miss seems playful yet still in control. I don't know really. I just like the ring of "Miss Katt"... my subs know that when speaking they must use Miss or risk punishment... I guess, whatever floats your boat! I know that when meeting new people and they use Goddess or Ma'am or Mistress, it seems pushed... you have to have be involved with me for it to seem less obtrusive?

I prefer to be addressed by my Scene name without any titles as a general rule.
"Mistress" or "My Lady" are intimate terms to me, not for just anyone to speak.
And "Ma'am" always makes me feel like an elderly librarian.

I go by Mistress and only my sub may call me that. I've been involved in BDSM for a longgg time and earned the title so I reserve it for that special someone to use.

Greetings,
I was given the title Lady Melissa by a dominant in my local community for the way I handled some touchy situations. Most people in the local community shorten it to Lady Mel which sort of bugs me cause I don't really care to be called "Mel".

I prefer a simple ma'am since it works in any social setting.

If you look up Mistress in the dictionary it lists head of household. Since I am the head of my house, which I call Ds Haven, I list Mistress of Ds Haven in my signature line. I normally don't use Mistress Melissa except as a screen name.

If someone calls me "Mistress" it better be someone I own. The title by itself implies ownership and thus unless I own them, I don't wish to hear them address me as such.

Yes, I love that as well, I don't require it, but if it comes from the heart I get weak in the knees hearing it.

PS. It's really awesome hearing it in an Italian accent!!
