"U.S. show of force in Persian Gulf"

POSTED: 9:51 a.m. EDT, March 27, 2007

"ABOARD THE USS JOHN C. STENNIS IN THE GULF (AP) -- The U.S. Navy on Tuesday began its largest demonstration of force in the Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, deploying two aircraft carriers and conducting simulated aerial attacks.

The maneuvers, involving 15 U.S. warships and more than a hundred planes, were certain to increase tension with Iran, which has frequently condemned the U.S. military presence off its coastline.

The exercises began only four days after Iran captured 15 British sailors and marines whom it accused of straying into Iranian waters near the Gulf. Britain and the U.S. Navy have insisted the British sailors were operating in Iraqi waters. (Full story) "

It doesn't take a magic eight ball to see what's coming.

On an unrelated business note, military supply companies are posting record earnings, with very strong forecasts....

mnottertail -> RE: "U.S. show of force in Persian Gulf" (3/27/2007 9:08:29 AM)

and even more unrelated.

Haliburton is entrenching in the middle east by moving there.

Guess the retirement plan is being implemented for the Bush twins.

With regard to the capture of the Brit. marines then I think ,is the Poker term, we have been called. What have we got ?

Tho' I still support the invasion and removal of Saddam we should have realised that sooner or later if we go throwing our weight about a situation like this would be likely to occur.
Have we got the military resources to deal with it ? I just dont know. I am sure the will exists, but thats not sufficient. Watch this space

cyberdude611 -> RE: "U.S. show of force in Persian Gulf" (3/27/2007 3:36:45 PM)

Capturing of those Marines is technically an act of war if they were not in Iranian territorial waters. The Iranians have no authority in international or Iraqi waters to detain anybody.

The bigger question everyone is ignoring is what was on those ships those Marines were inspecting that freaked out the Iranian government?

I would not be surprised if the Brits soon expel Iranian diplomats from their country. And then this just will just continue to escalate until Iran releases the hostages. Tony Blair today did not rule out military force.

This isn't the first time Iran has pulled this tactic. In 1979 the Ayatollahs took 55 American diplomats hostage. It lead to a crisis. Many of those 55 hostages today believe Amadinejad was involved in the seizure and mis-treatment of those hostages.

I've said it before....Bush II will be the first retired President...that within 24 months, will have a net worth of 100 million dollars.

(Or more).

Unconnected events, and beyond bullshit.

Look, the fuckin' water has been disputed between Iraq and Iran since Christ was a corporal.  Blair, I have to say is doing this one thing right and it is something the USA cannot do, take it to world court. Settle the disagreement in the world.

If every fuckin'  aggriegement in this world is going to rezult in a  fuckin' muzzle flash, woe to you and yours.

Interestingly enough, you all need to go to bars some of you, and get shit faced drunk and stand next to the most obnoxious people in the house.  Don't run you men of honor.  Don't sweep out a little place to stand. Don't jump in the middle of the fray as a peacekeeper, cause they are gonna take your fuckin' head off and you need to take that to the bank.
It will be or not be their water, but it is at this point a CIVIL matter and no cause for war. Nobody is terrorizing anyone.

What I don't understand is if there was a British Warship right there how and why did they just "let" their personel be taken captive?
They'd have no problem sinking patrol boats with gunfire.
You don't just let people "take" your guys!

For some reason I am assuming Iran could care less what some stupid court ran by Europeans have to say about their foreign policy. The Ayatollahs is a religious extremist regime. They dont give a damn about international law.

Because Europeans are gutless and afraid to start a war.

I remember back during the Kosovo conflict. The UN designated a number of Dutch troops to watch over some muslim refugees in a designated safe zone. The Serbs violated the zone and slaughtered the muslims. What did the Dutch do? They watched...too terrified that firing a shot might kill someone or start a war. In the end, the Dutch government eventually resigned over the incident. But it shows you how Europe has become so pacifist that they even lack the ability to act to save themselves.

And people wonder how Hitler took over that continent so easily....

I actually don't know enough about politics or the world scene to have an opinion...but at 48, I've read a few things, lived long enough to see things happen far more than twice....and I gotta think...(and I'm not a gloom and doom kind of guy)....

We're kind of like coming to a time in the world that, there's a bunch of people bouncing chests, and I have to believe we're coming to a place where someone's going to debate someone else's sisters virginity or something.

Invading (by whatever euphemism) Iran is inevitable. Plausable excuse preferred but not necessary. Some have suggested this Brit Marines incident was put forth as 'bait'. Others have suggested that Iran may have acted in hopes that having Allied hostages might ward off or at least delay the inevitable.

Iraq was THE ONLY SECULAR STATE in the Mideast.

Just saying

Sternhand4 -> RE: "U.S. show of force in Persian Gulf" (3/27/2007 6:19:25 PM)

Invading Iran is not "inevitable" unless they make it so..
All you have to do is listen to them. They said almost a week ago that they would capture allied personel.
Only days before that, the Revolutionary Guard’s weekly newspaper had threatened the abduction of Americans in Iraq and elsewhere, saying, “We’ve got the ability to capture a nice bunch of blue-eyed, blond-haired officers and feed them to our fighting cocks. Iran has enough people who can reach the heart of Europe and kidnap Americans and Israelis.”

But a better source for what may be happening.

'Capture of UK sailors response to Iranian officers’ arrest'

Iranian military source quoted by al-Sharq al-Awsat as saying that decision to capture 15 British sailors in Persian Gulf was reached after diplomatic efforts to release ‘Al-Quds Force’ officers seized by American troops in Iraq failed; Fars news agency reports soldiers transferred to Tehran to explain their ‘aggressive action’

You have astounded me with your insight for the last time.  I am humbled and can only certainly agree that this must be the case.  I hope you are the next president, you can spell from time to time.

I stated on these boards months ago, that war with Iran is inevitable. I just don't know where the manpower is going to come from.
