What I don't understand is if there was a British Warship right there how and why did they just "let" their personel be taken captive?
They'd have no problem sinking patrol boats with gunfire.
You don't just let people "take" your guys!

Well there has been an 'invisible' draft for some time now. Stop Orders and recall of service persons irrespective of age who have not had a full 8 years in service [the fine print]... a draft perhaps although such would follow same course as with Vietnam [that was not a 'war' either], or perhaps it may be that our chimpo in chief has no clue... once we are spread even thinner... well, we have few friends internationally nemore [odd, that] should some bully commence to beating upon us...

Just Saying [nods to Synergy... great Last Word, this]

I stated on these boards months ago, that war with Iran is inevitable. I just don't know where the manpower is going to come from.

Supposedly, there has been a plan on the table for quite some time, to replace the 1st Armored Division in Wiesbaden Germany, with a single Brigade from the 4th Infantry Division. 1st Armor has a bunch of attachments, and is an almost Corps sized formation ... right around 30,000 troops, not counting the two thousand troops from this division, already in Iraq ... and has all the latest equipment, etc ...

Lets hope we decide not to use them. Iran is just blowing smoke. Better to let them blow, until they blow out.

Because Europeans are gutless and afraid to start a war.
I remember back during the Kosovo conflict.
And people wonder how Hitler took over that continent so easily....

Taken across society as a whole I dont think it is true to say that the Brits. are gutless. What is true is that we have troops spread all over the place. Germany Ireland,Iraq Afghanistan and we simply dont have the capacity to do  a great deal when a situation like this arises. Clearly I dont KNOW what our troop capability is but I have read quotes by "top" soldiers saying we are doing too much with too little.
We also now have the problem of a large Muslim sector resident in the UK who's sympathies, to put it mildly, are divided.

T Blair is coming to the end of his time so is it possible that "things" could go either way. ie a last throw of the dice and more military action. I just dont know.

Whereas the Bush administration on the other hand ...

It looks to me like The Bush-Cheney house of cards is in the initial stage of collapse. Other than the fact he's a lame duck, homie has very little leverage. And with Rove, Cheney and the rest of the administration not only hailing to Straussian concepts, but being ''Atwater'' sycophants in a way that promotes using the latter time period/back end of the current administration to persevere and campaign for the next one, the ''lame duck'' concept really offers no leverage.

Besides, prominent members of the party he falsely identifies-with even talk of his ouster. Should he continue to act unilaterally and commence with a bombing campaign of Iran without the support of Congress and the American people, I think there's hellva good chance we'll have a constitutional crisis on our hands and a removal by force scenario.

The tale of Watergate held up the sign that says ''Beware'' of excessive unitary privileges within the executive branch. The underlying message through out that whole fiasco was that the instrument engineered by the framers we know as checks and balances, needs to be re-constituted and returned to the system. We can no longer allow any more ''push back'' or be decieved by false-provacations or we end-up with a mini dictator scenario.

I remember back during the Kosovo conflict. The UN designated a number of Dutch troops to watch over some muslim refugees in a designated safe zone. The Serbs violated the zone and slaughtered the muslims. What did the Dutch do? They watched...too terrified that firing a shot might kill someone or start a war. In the end, the Dutch government eventually resigned over the incident. But it shows you how Europe has become so pacifist that they even lack the ability to act to save themselves.

And people wonder how Hitler took over that continent so easily....

its the direction this country is headed
