FelinePersuasion -> Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/11/2005 11:45:28 PM)

Other than water what would be a good low cal or other wise pretty much non fattening liquid to substitute snacking with. Sometimes I get really hungry or just feel hungry at night and I don't always want to eat, expesially if I have eaten my fill of meals earlier.

food snack suggestions that have no calories or less than 50 would be ok too.

Throw some stuff in a blender. Yogurt mixed with some fruit, milk, even some cheap high protein powder doesnt taste so bad. Make your own smoothies or shakes out of whatever fruits or juices you like. Dont be worried so much about calories. A "calorie" is just a measure of energy burned. It means nothing beyond that. A calorie can be good or bad as in someone can get their calories from junkfood or clean food.
Try to get a decent protein to carb ratio. Carbohydrates are what makes people tend to gain or retain weight. If your body is not getting enough protein it goes into "survival" mode and will burn the "calories" it needs from your muscle stores and NOT from fat. Our bodies are designed this way to to ensure that a certain amount of fat stores are maintained so we wont freeze to death etc. Especially women to protect if we are pregnant. It might seem stupid in todays world but in that regard we have not evolved much from our ancestors who lived in caves. :)

Isn't it cute how all the gals suggest some type of food. Meanwhile the other guys like me are thinking of something that is high in protein, low in carbs, and you'd probably be eating it with a hand on the back of your head.

Coffee has zero calories as long as you drink it without sugar or creamer. And the caffeine helps to zap appetite too. [:)]

I love chocolate milk. Make it with non-fat milk and low-cal chololate milk mix. i like it even better when it's hot because it makes me feel full fast.

There's no other than water for me...
It's honestly 1 of my good dietetic habits, I love water, and coffee, rather than juices and soda. I do like the sparkling fruit flavored water, but not sure how healthy those are as far as additives. M

I love Crystal Light. Very few calories and still tastes wonderful.

FelinePersuasion,
You can eat Tortila chips (look on the bag for: per serving size) and salsa (salsa is a free food). I have worked with a Dietician for a few years now and the one thing that has been great when you feel that urge to just HAVE something are these items. The salsa is also an added zing for your tastebuds.

hope this helped...happy Tuesday!

Oh yeah!! i forgot something. As far as liquids go...you can get these flavored waters at sams club. Some of them taste really good and satisfy that urge also.

I love those flavored waters from Sam's, and Crystal Light. Alberton's carried some for a while that were wonderful as weel but I haven't seen them in a while. For now I've been sticking to hot tea with lots of Equal, mint and lemon juice to get rid of this nasty cough.

MistressJadeMTL -> RE: Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/14/2005 2:27:31 AM)

I have always enjoyed hot teas during the cold winter months, and I make my own versions of ice tea during the warmer months. If you want to avoid caffeine before bedtime, there are plenty of wonderful herbal teas that have no caffeine. I do not use any cream or milk and only sweeten with a substitute such as Equal (I never use "pink" cyclamate-based sweeteners due to concerns about their health risks).

I am one of those people who is rarely satisfied by water alone, and simply *cannot* force myself to drink the much stereotyped "8 glasses a day" that people bandy about. What most people never realize that that standard came from 1940's tests that did not take water content from daily food intake into account in their calculations. (I even found one of the articles that I bookmarked that covered some of this topic, for those that might be interested in knowing more: http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/deanfulltexttopics.cfm?id=47420 )

However, I do find that I am much more likely to be able to drink more liquid if it is flavoured, however subtly. I make my own herbal ice teas by letting one or more tea bags of a "Celestial Seasonings" brand tea sit in a chug-style bottle of filtered water overnight and sweeten to taste. I particularly like "Sleepytime", "Orange Mandarin" and "Passion Peach" flavours.

Best bonus? Very inexpensive to make at pennies a glass, no artificial colourings or preservatives, and you can customize it to your specific flavour or sweetening preferences.

Hope this tip proves helpful! It sure has helped me...

It certaintly does sound good MistressJade.

Caffein doesn't have the sterotypical reaction everyone thinks it should.Cafine doesn't make me wide awake or keep me awake. Infact a hot cup of hazle nut coffe makes me sleepy and full* grins*

junecleaver -> RE: Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/14/2005 12:10:47 PM)

I chew ice all the time. Sometimes I feel like eating even though I'm not hungry, so that helps cut down on the calorie intake

siamsa24 -> RE: Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/14/2005 12:18:32 PM)

I also drink Diet Vanilla Pepsi (or the Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper if I can find it), at least a 24 pack every week. It;s not very good for you, but it will fill you up.

sweetnygirl -> RE: Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/14/2005 4:36:32 PM)

Count me in on having chocolate milk when I get hungry at night. And for those times when water won't quench my thirst I'm also a big fan of Celestial Seasonings Green Tea with Honey, Lemon & Ginseng & also the Raspberry Green Tea, both with Splenda (I find it doesn't have an aftertaste like the other sweeteners do).

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/14/2005 7:57:24 PM)

Sia the whole point is for the snack to be good for you lol. Diet soda's the fake sugar in it has been prooven to cause cancer with some of the sugar brands. There's also no medical proof diet aids in weight loss, so all the people drinking it thinking it won't affect weight gain are operating on false belifes mostly
