MistressJadeMTL -> RE: Good liquid substitions for snacking? (4/14/2005 2:27:31 AM)

I have always enjoyed hot teas during the cold winter months, and I make my own versions of ice tea during the warmer months. If you want to avoid caffeine before bedtime, there are plenty of wonderful herbal teas that have no caffeine. I do not use any cream or milk and only sweeten with a substitute such as Equal (I never use "pink" cyclamate-based sweeteners due to concerns about their health risks). I am one of those people who is rarely satisfied by water alone, and simply *cannot* force myself to drink the much stereotyped "8 glasses a day" that people bandy about. What most people never realize that that standard came from 1940's tests that did not take water content from daily food intake into account in their calculations. (I even found one of the articles that I bookmarked that covered some of this topic, for those that might be interested in knowing more: http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/deanfulltexttopics.cfm?id=47420 ) However, I do find that I am much more likely to be able to drink more liquid if it is flavoured, however subtly. I make my own herbal ice teas by letting one or more tea bags of a "Celestial Seasonings" brand tea sit in a chug-style bottle of filtered water overnight and sweeten to taste. I particularly like "Sleepytime", "Orange Mandarin" and "Passion Peach" flavours. Best bonus? Very inexpensive to make at pennies a glass, no artificial colourings or preservatives, and you can customize it to your specific flavour or sweetening preferences. Hope this tip proves helpful! It sure has helped me...
