had I been able to choose my race, it would have been the race of the filthy fuckin' rich.  Hands down winner, for me.

I agree and I believe we all have walked in different shoes before, black white or red like my background,irish and red woman makes up the start of our family tree..bounty

LotusSong -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/4/2007 9:39:46 AM)

Yep.  And in that netherworld were we chose our 'gifts'- I wasn't willing to wait for "Patience". I spotted the MS line and mistakingly thought it meant "Money and Sex" and ran up and said "Give it to me quick and lots of it!".

Then for some reason I chose to be born a Catholic.  They teach that we must bear our 'crosses' with Grace.

(If I EVER find that bitch Grace, I want to know where she's been and why she isn't holding up her end!)

I'm glad I took a big helping of Humor there- it sure came in handy :)

could also be a gang banger thing.

As for the do rags.....there are a few different reasons for that.

1. It is to train the hair to lay in a certain pattern or direction

2. It is to protect the scalp from sunburn

3. It is a fashion statement

I am sure there are more that I am not aware of...but that gives you something to go on.

daddysprop247 -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/4/2007 10:06:41 AM)

when i was a little kid, i always had a fascination with native american culture. part of it came from visiting my great-grandmother twice a year (her birthday and mother's day) on the res. she was a mix of mattaponi and seminole, real tough and gritty, wouldn't leave the res for anything. but i admired her because she was a free spirit and never tried to conform...was never married a day in her life, and had 10 children (of various races) with various fathers...and never felt the least bit of shame about it. i remember visiting her mother's day when i was 15, and she looks at me kinda funny then holds my face in her hands and kinda sniffs my forehead. she goes "so you're a woman now eh?"..which was her way of saying i wasn't a virgin any longer. somehow she could smell it! lol.

but right now i think if i could choose to be born again as any race, i'd still choose to be black, only i would like to be african rather than american, and i'd like to have a beautiful, smooth dark dark ebony complexion, no body hair because i've shaved and waxed enough for 10 lifetimes.

Having grown up in Watts (Los Angeles) I watched the trends change.  I don't think there is really anything that can signify a gang banger according to dress anymore.  Everyone wears everything.  It used to be colors, then hats to the side, then sagging pants, then this, that and the other.  I think people tend to see a specific group within a specific ethnic group wearing something in a way that no one else wears it and they want to automatically tag them as gang bangers.  They might indeed be a gang, but that doesn't make them bangers (gun carrying or violent).

Lets take the Red Hat Ladies.  They all walk around wearing Purple/lilac clothing and Red/Pink hats.  They are in essence a gang, but they are not bangers. But they are not considered a gang because they are a GROUP/Gang of older women.

Let's cut people some slack...Every ethnic person that dresses a certain way is not necessarily a gang banger....sometimes they just like the fashion statement.

StellaByStarlite -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/4/2007 11:53:43 AM)

Hello =)

Race and ethnicity. Well, my ex-husband is half Korean, half Italian. There is Japanese on my stepdad's side of the family, too. =)

Japan and Korea have, shall we say, a bit of tension in their joint history. The bigger family togethers were a study in fake politeness.

The majority of my ex-husband's family is full Korean. I had my cultural battles with his mother, lol. Yes indeedy. Looking back on it, though, I realize that in her Korean way, she was trying her best to be a good mother-in-law. I just couldn't see it at the time.

My kids are physically gorgeous. <g> We shook the genetic dice around and came up with two Yahtzees.

Cheers

If  I could have chosen my race (metaphysics side of the belief that we do chose this all before our incarnations)- I would have chosen to be Asian- (Japanese specifically because I like the discipline of their culture).  This hulky Hungarian/German body of mine is a pain in the ass.

In my next life I'm going to be probably Amerasian - because I want to keep my green eyes.  But I want to be petite.  I want the thick, straight blue-black hair and small feet for a change.  I love the almond-shaped eyes.

LotusSong:
What you are discribing are the women of Malaysia, absofuckingloutly breathtaking.
Not the green eyes though...med height, thin, dark dark brown almond shaped eyes and blue black straight shinny hair.

Hulky Hungarian/German body......mmmmmmmmmmm! ....Donuts.

For some reason "mixed" children end up with the best offered from both parents.....They are often the most physically beautiful and visually striking people I have ever seen.....And they get the "good hair"...lol

kisshou -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/5/2007 4:08:19 AM)

Greetings LotusSong,

often times when filling out a job application or financial aid for college there is that extra sheet of paper. On top it will state that filling it out is voluntary and just a way for them to have statistics , the paper will ask what race, sex etc you are.

I always fill it out but I always wonder if I was of a different race if I would fill it out. It always makes me slightly angry filling it out also because the evil side of me wonders for a moment if I checked off being a minority race if I would get more scholarships or if it would effect my employment application.

I also wonder if I was in a minority race if I would think the opposite. ie Check off that I am in a minority race and then be automatically disqualified.

Maybe those forms universally bug everyone but for different reasons. Or maybe they don't bother other people at all. Jus twondering.

LadyEllen -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/5/2007 4:53:58 AM)

Yep - those forms bug me too. I know what theyre for, but really are we still at the stage where it matters, or is even relevant? I suppose so, unfortunately.

For me, someone's background is interesting, like their religion and other things about them, but when I make a decision on who gets the job, its the best person every time, regardless. Not because of some PC thing, but because my future prosperity relies on the best possible performance of the person in that job.

StellaByStarlite -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/5/2007 5:14:59 AM)

Hello. =)

As far as I know, checking something the race box in a job application is optional.

and I think the race section in public university applications have a lot to do with how much government funding they recieve as well. Not sure, tho

RosaB -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/5/2007 6:47:32 AM)

I guess I was just privileged as a child.  I grew up having a widely diverse group of friends from varied ethnic groups.  I remember my best friend in kindergarten, Maria, was Latino, Anna, a few years later was another best friend, she was Italian and my play group, was of every background imaginable.  We played with our dolls, rode bikes together, did each others hair, played dress up.  I've never felt uncomfortable around people outside of my ethnic make up and I guess it was mostly due to my upbringing.  There was never talk of race around my home, people were people. But don't get me wrong, I've grown to feel the tensions brought on by other peoples discontent; and since my move to where I live now, and reading comments from some on the forums, I've  felt it more so than ever before of late.  But over all, I'm happy to have known and had the wonderful experiences with people from so many varied backgrounds.   My only standing curiosity is what might it be like to candle wax every single part of Brad Pitt.  [:D]

MSUgirl -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/5/2007 9:28:03 AM)

im happy with who I am, and what race I am. ive grown up in a 99% white community, but ive had best friends of every color of the spectrum

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/5/2007 9:50:04 AM)

red hats is a society for women 50 to 60 + 50 wears pink 60's the red.  you're taking my words gang banger to litterally a GANG of women can not be compared to a gang like the crpts and the bloods and the nortay's and most gangs are violent. Gang fights gang retaliations, Gangs sending out hit lists on other gang memebers. Infact a highschool senior about to graduate was murdered by a gang doing a drive by. She was an innocent bystander. Yeah not ALL gangs are violent, but most are.

I forgot to say she went to the highschool I  did. she was prepairing for prom, and had been accepted to acollege and now she's being burried in her prom dress instead of going to prom.

BBBTBW -> RE: Let's talk about Race (4/9/2007 3:15:36 AM)

To some of us that have lived in the gang banger infested areas, the words people use are LITERAL.  They have origins.  The word BANGERS when used in conjunction with the word GANG, implies violence.

It doesn't matter the age, ethnicity or gender of a person.  If they are a group, they are a gang.  The word "gang" does not imply violence.

I have known many people that have been threatened, hurt or killed by gang bangers, me included.  On the flip side I know many people that have been helped by gangs of people.  The gangs that help people are not as notorious as the gang bangers that hurt people.  The good gangs don't get airtime.

Learn the origins of the words and learn the difference.
