nah...because even the most extreme of us are still just playing a game....albeit a very complex and socially evolved game, but its still a game:

it is activity done for amusement (no one is forcing us to live this way)

it has a structure and rules (protocols)

there are tactic and strategy's (self explained)

to some it has competition (we know who those folks are...[:)])

now i know that some will say ...oh this is not a game, i live this....i was born this way...but to those i say, listen i am not doubting that you have found a structure and a framework that makes you feel like you belong...that is the same for all of us, that is why we are here, that is why we play....but its still a game, just like golf is a game.

tiger woods most likely was born with  natural ability's and inclinations, and he found a structure that supports his innate strengths, challenges his weaknesses and and makes him his most realized self, and i am sure it feels as though he was born to play golf, in the same way that sometimes it feels as though i was born to blow glass. but had he never been introduced to it, his life, and history would have been vastly differnt....just as our lives would.

but back to your question OP does it bother me that there is seemingly all this bigotry...no, cause it is all part of the game, part and parcel of the character traits and special powers each person dons as they play, but when you meet any one of them in real life they mostly are polite, normal folks.

where it gets sketchy for me is when folks get so engrossed in the game they forget that they are living by an external construct for their own amusement (ie:taking them selves so seriously) and then feel like they have to proselytize and convert non-believers to their particular version of the game.

Bigotry is an element of society as a whole. We are simply a microcosm of that society. It bothers me here as much as it bothers me elsewhere. I am very turned off by those who want to serve me because I am a "Superior Female" or white.

I agree completely. The fact of the matter is that, those that are into BDSM or "the lifestyle" or "this thing we do" are simply part of the world's general population. We are no better or worse. We are people within general society that come together as a result of "one or more common factors". Just like the people that join groups for quilting or NASCAR or any other type of gathering of people that share some common factor.  Chances are if the person is a "supremacist" (or racist or sexist, etc) before they got involved with BDSM they will be one after they get involved. Some were not, however, as a direct result of having exposure they adopt that way of thinking by choice.

From my experience supremacy (female or male), racism, sexism, etc. are no more or less accepted within the BDSM public scene as they are accepted in general population. Those that share those mindsets tend to "cling together" and those that do not tend to "cling together". A supremacist, racists, etc. would NOT be accepted in any of the groups of friends I have either BDSM related or not. Not only would I NOT tolerate it, no one I choose to associate with would tolerate it either. I have experienced sexism within the BDSM public scene where a male Dom treated me as a submissive simply because I am a female, however, they simple have no meaning to me. I will not and do not associate with people of that mindset and I will not tolerate that behavior plain and simple, as they will be left standing their talking to themselves after I have told them what I think about their mindset. Male or female, it makes no difference.

The fact that there are people that are bigots, racists, supremacist, etc. in the world and the BDSM realm does not shock me in the least, as people are people. What matters is how I handle it. If confronted with a racist, etc. I must stand my ground. I must let them know that it is “not ok” with me. If I simply blow it off and ignore it then I am simply enabling them to continue behavior around me that I find offensive and ignorant. It is one thing for them to spout that type of mindset within their own “personal relationships”, however, when expressed or shown publicly to or towards someone they asking to be agreed or disagreed with. I am not going to agree.

Someone once said, “Evil prevails when good men do nothing”.  I certainly agree with this statement.

I do not think I or anyone can “change the world”, however, I do think by not tolerating that behavior within our own personal space, it does send a clear message to those that may invade it. All we can do is not tolerate it “one person at a time”. This includes watching carefully for whom we vote for.

Bigotry burns my ass - no matter what the lifestyle, ect.
It is just another way to be intolerant (in mho that is just another way of saying i'm ignorant and have no wish to change)

I am submissive but that doesn't mean I'm less than a Dom (in fact I can outsmart more than a few Dom's) but i'm not any better than they are.

I am not less of a woman since I choice to be submissive (put that in your feminist Domme's pipe and smoke it).

I'm not equal either - to be equal means to be the same.

I'm me - and there is no one else like me.

Blessed Be

stella40 -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/4/2007 10:46:16 PM)

I'm transgendered, so for some people (and it is some people) I'm at the bottom of the pile, not just in the community but also in society.

I don't subscribe to the view that I can only be offended if I allow myself to be offended. This is as logical as saying Iraq was invaded because it allowed itself to be invaded. Or a woman is raped because she allowed herself to be raped.

People make judgements about others in terms of their own understanding of other people, empathetic and intellectual capabilities. It's always their judgement and never the majority view.

Am I bothered when someone makes such statements? Personally no.

I just feel sorry for such people who are so limited to make such statements.

And I know the world needs idiots to be able to know what intelligence is.

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/4/2007 10:56:45 PM)

I think you have hit it out of the park bliss,so many think they are so much better then most others,it all come down to what kind of human we are I believe. One can skip thur life thinking his shit doesn't stink and in the end has nothing..bounty

So the point of this thread: Does it bother you as much to see these statements, or one insulting submissives of either gender because they submit, as it does to see someone insulted for their race?

Thank you for your time in reading and responding.

None of those statements, applied in any context, would bother me in the slightest.
People express what they experience, and it tells me more about them. I think W.C. Fields sumed it up the best when he said," I am above discrimination, I hate all people equally."
If someone thinks that all men are superior, all mexicans are superior, all white protestant doms of germanic heritage are superior, I say so long as your pride is not at the expense of pushing or holding another party down, you do you and I will still go right along doing what I am doing. If though their pride is oppressive or violent than I may attempt to express my pov and cast things in a different light, but I accept I can not change the world.

SusanofO -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/4/2007 11:50:47 PM)

If there are Dominants out there who really do believe all submissives are congenitally "weak", then that really doesn't say much for their ability to "dominate" - does it?

I mean, if they were up to the job, wouldn't they be choosing partners who were a slight bit more of a challenge, even if those partners are submissive, and not just choosing people who were "weak" to begin with, and therefore, supposedly easiest to dominate?

Maybe they are just interested in dominating anyone, and don't require a sense of discrimination.

So much for the term "Master" then, I guess - because what are these guys "Mastering" really, if their premise is that any person they dominante is so inhernetly weak to begin with, that that they could presumably be dominated by, say, a scare-crow in a cornfield?

DocTSH -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/5/2007 2:09:10 AM)

I suppose I can only comment from words of wisdom I recieved years ago from my godfather.  He once told that me "Ignorance is curable, but stupid is forever".  That phrase has never left me, and never will.

My view is rather two fold...and the first may come across as crass, but hear me out.

1)  I dont care who you are, what race you are, what religion you follow, your orientation.  It doesnt matter one bit.  If you dont like the way I am or think,  it doesn't matter.  I am not here to impress anyone.  I see people as who they are and assholes come in all of the above catagories.  I have friends from different races, religions and orientations.  I like all of them, and some of them I love.

2) Bigots; you are some of my favorites simply because you have no groud to stand on other than an argument of what you think is right.  Slamming your ignorant ideals gives me pleasure simply because they have no basis of point.  So thank you for the entertainment value...thats all you have.

As far as the "Hippie" part of the thread goes...here is a little Q&A:

Q: How many hippies does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: I don't know, I always thought hippies screwed in dirty old sleeping bags.

SusanofO -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/5/2007 2:43:48 AM)

Cute joke about the hippies.[:D]

I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. Nice thought but will never happen. Bigorty and supremacy are a by product of centuries of war. What can you do to change it. Nothing really. Deal with it and try to make the right choices in your life to help combat it.

While I agree that the only thing a single person can do is 'deal' with those who think that they are somehow 'better' than anyone else; I disagree that there is nothing that can be done. Education is the key. If you can educate ONE person and they come to see the other side of the fence; then that is progress.

tulinwl -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/5/2007 8:09:14 AM)

As much as I would like to think otherwise, we will always have discrimination in every facet of our existance. It could be as broad as gender and race, or narrow as the who checks out the groceries to the one who bags them. People seem to always want to one-up another.

tulinwl

Laura -> RE: Bigotry in the lifestyle? (4/5/2007 10:35:05 AM)

It's not the words that matter it's the emotion and intentions behind them. I can call a male sub a slut at one time and it's playful and at another time I can call a guy a slut and it's meant as an insult and I want it to be taken that way.
