Why are so many folks hung up on labels? Old, when are you old; bottoms, are they slaves or subbmissive or both or are they a 3rd type; Master, Dom(me)or top, are they same? Do they need to be different? Of course it's even worse in the vanilla world like Irish-american, German-american, African american or the siiliest one of all Native-american. I think if you are a citizen here you are an American! What say you( is it Y/you?)?

I agree, all "labels" do is bring clarity and enhance understanding when communicating, esp between strangers.  we should confine ourselves to speaking only in generalisations in order to keep eveyone happy - that'll work!

greetings totalmaster4you,

labels are our way of trying to communicate certain things about ourselves to other people. because different people have different definitions of certain things, this often ends up being a messy process. it's the only one we have, though. in some general kinds of ways it does work; after all, if we didn't have those nifty dominant/master/switch/slave/submissive identifiers, how would people who enjoy being in a position of authority in a relationship find people who enjoy giving up their authority in a relationship? it'd be just one big jumble of profiles. i think the labels a person chooses for themself does show something about them, though; people who get hung up on hyphenated americanism, for example, often do it because they are trying to be overly politically correct or because they are trying to preserve/reconnect with the heritage they originally came from.

the problem with labels is when people get hung up on them and look at them as a be-all end-all. labels are a sophisticated example of the way that language is used as a whole. we use words like "tree" and "chair" to denote matter in certain states of being so that we can adequately communicate with each other; we use words like "slave" and "submissive" for the same reasons. of course, there are all kinds of trees and chairs, just as there are all kinds of slaves and submissives, so i think it's important to recognize how getting caught up in labels can cause just as much havoc as simple linguistic miscommunication, in much the same way.

respectfully,
annabelle.

I say you need to stop worrying/obsessing so much about what other people are saying and doing and just worry about you.  Complain less, live more.

Labels are useful for effective communication. We humans love to classify things. Ever looked up how many kinds of rock there are? I mean, you'd think rock is rock...but...ask a geologist about rock sometime.

There are those in life who have to label and dissect things in order to feel secure. They have to have specific terms for specific things so that they keep their lives in oder. But as with most thing it's all left up to iterpretation. Sure that can make things confusing. But what in life isn't? I suppose that when splitting hairs with titles and descriptions that it's not so much what others think but what you yourself feel it should be. Poe-tay-toes, poe-tah-toes and what not. I say get the gist then apply it to your life as you see fit.

Labels are like signposts on a street. Interstate 10 is REALLY long.
They are a starting point. A reference. They say "in this general vicinity" and then finding out specific details takes a bit more work.

I'm a switch. That's a starting point for you. You can safely realize that I'm not always in one role. But what is MY switching about? That takes getting to know me.

My self identification is different than how others might define me based on my actions...and I have found situations where I define someone as something, but they self identify differently. That is when labels start to conflict.

For a completely unrelated example, I have lots of hosiery. And lots of lil tubs with hosiery in it. Some are stockings, some are pantyhose. MY definition of stockings is "thigh high, stays up with elastic or needs a garterbelt". Some other people define stockings as an umbrella term, the way I use hosiery. Thankfully, context "please bring me a pair of stockings with a garterbelt" usually clears that up. When it doesn't, it causes laughter.

We could wish that confusion with labels in kink caused laughter rather than anger more often.
