And Ho's come on. I don't even care about the Ho's part.  And that term is used to mean everything from women in a non-demeaning manner to calling someone a whore. So, that isn't even a big deal.

Maybe he was talking about a garden hoe cover?

Would that be at every Home Depot, or can he trust the garden hoes to spread the word of his contrition amongst themselves?

A big deal was made because this is a gateway term to other more offensive comments.  If this isn't nipped at the bud now, what is going to stop him and others from calling them Nappy-Headed "N" words next time?

These particular terms are blatently racist. So YES he should be taken to task as should anyone else that contributed to the conversation.

I believe in free speech.  However, when it only serves to demean people, it should be called to the attention of those making the statements and they should have to atone for their behavior.

I wonder XahleenaXkajiraX how you would feel if he had singled a group of you and your peers out as stringy headed white bitches that were afraid to get naked in front of their husbands.  How would that make you feel about yourself?  6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other.

If he used jigaboos, well yeah that is pretty straight foward racism and CBS is justified in punishing him, and really has to to avoid a lawsuit. I've not seen the transcript, I  guess I'm going to have to dig it up. So, I can see the whole thing for myself.

Tuomas -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 10:52:45 PM)

Isn't repeating the word "jigaboo" in a discussion furthering racism?

And what does "jigaboo" mean, anyway, for us non-Americans? And the "N" word.... I'm kind of curious about that. I mean, what does it mean, and why is it Ok to say, "the N word" and not the actual word?

Jigaboo is a racist term from the 50's and 60's used to describe the darker skinned coarser haired black person.

Wannabe is a racist term from the 50's and 60's used to describe the lighter skinned finer haired black person.  (it is used today to describe other things but used in the context that it was used on the radio show, it was a racist term)

And the "N" word.... I'm kind of curious about that. I mean, what does it mean, and why is it Ok to say, "the N word" and not the actual word?

It's against CM TOS to use the full word, so we only use the first letter.

Well, the question isn't really whether he has the right to say "N word", or jigaboo. He can run around his house yelling it at the top of his lungs, and I don't care. The point here is that "jigaboo" is a term like "N word", whose origins and original meaning doesn't really matter. There really isn't a non-derogatory way in that context to use the term jigaboo, and it only applies to blacks. It's like what is a spic(spelling), a  term, everyone understands that used to describe hispanics in a bad manner. What is a "cracker", well the only time I've heard it used outside of the dinner table is a derogatory term for white people. Since the purpose of certain terms is almost always negative and racial, and in that context the term jigaboo could not be interpretted in other way than racist.

I'd have to change my opinion, that he probably shiould be fired. As he's working for NBC, and represents them, and thus NBC becomes responsible for his use of that terminology and reflects upon them.

Anyway, I just listened to the video and I don't think it was Imus that said jigaboo but his croney. So, either way, they have the right to be racist, or throw racially charged words around, but I can't believe they could be so stupid to say jigaboo. And NBC can't just say, oh that's okay, because then they'd get accused of being racist. If I were NBC I'd fire him. Who needs to deal with that.

edited to change N word to N word was unaware of that  policy, and change CBS to NBC.

I don't see how referencing a word not directed at someone can be racist.

I give my opinion on this in my previous post.

He is still completely covered by the first amendment.  That keeps him from being arrested and jailed for having an opinion and stating it.  However, no one should suffer the delusion that the first amendment means that nothing they say will have consequence.  Sometimes that consequence will be that people calling you an asshole (which the first amendment allows them to do).  Sometimes that consequence will be people boycotting you (and thereby asserting their own first amendment right.)  Sometimes that result will be you getting fired for being a complete dumbass.  The first amendment doesnt, and shouldn't, negate the concept of personal responsibility for your words.  It only protects your abilty to have it without government persecution.  It doesn't mean the general public can't come to the conclusion that you're an ass.  Actions have consequences.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/10/2007 5:46:29 AM)

we discussed this yesterday at Fearless Radio during the New Music Binge.  thank goodness that we're an internet radio station here in Chicago because we can say and/or discuss whatever the hell we like (including sex, BDSM, etc) without any FCC rules clamping down on our free speech.  i don't agree to what Imus said on air however he's no better than Howard Stern or Mancow or Steve Dahl (local shock jocks in Chicago).  its a case of double standard here imho - Black Americans can say jiggaboo or wannabe (see Spike Lee's School Daze) as insult to another however if a white shock jock utters it, then it's racism.  something's wrong here.
