ORIGINAL: sambamanslilgirl but that's the problem, velvetears, for every shock jock and outrageous talk show host like Jerry Springer you ban, a new breed is being created for eager radio/television mindbots especially on internet radio like where i work, Fearless Radio, where the FCC rules don't apply to us. i have heard many racial slurs on the shows ...making fun of everyone celeb as well as average joes in the papers for the purpose of entertainment. should i be offended if one of my bosses calls me a "knappy headed ho"? i would laugh because that's a white liberal or the hot italian stallion joking around in the office. the bosses even challenge Sharpton and Jackson to come here and protest us - oh yeah we're that starved for media attention and dollars. also to add, what Don Imus said on air, he has been doing for the last 38yrs before the likes of Howard Stern and Mancow (local shock jock here in Chicago) were ever heard of. so why should this one statement be any different than the many others he has uttered for decades? Just because he's been doing it for 38 yrs doesn't make it ok. i would hope if these men, and i use this term very tentatively, were to go away perhaps *gasp* they would be replaced with someone of quality who will inspire people, enlighten people and not just opt to shock, degrade and denegrate others for sport and profit. We need to change as a society and set standards for our youth, not raise them in a culture where anything goes is the norm. Where will they learn where the line in the sand should be drawn, if there is no line in the sand?? i think when shows rely on these tactics for entertainment, it's because they have nothing of value to offer us. One example i can think of to demonstrate: Jerry Springer had the KKK on his show - all he did was stand in the aisle with his microphone and encourage them to spout their hate and fight. What purpose did it serve? i would not want my teenager to watch that garbage. On the other hand Dr. Phil had a series of shows where he put a group of people together to live for a short time and each one held a prejudice. For instance a white man who hated blacks and a black woman who hated whites, a lesbian who hated hetero's and a hetero girl who hated lesbians, a really overweight guy who hated skinny girls and a very thin girl who hated fat people. In the beginning the hatred and anger being exchanged was incredible, but Dr Phil gave them tasks and engaged them in dialogue and by the end of the series everyone learned something from their experience and walked away a changed individual - you understood why those people held onto the prejudices they had, and to see the process of change happening was a wonderful thing. i am not fan of Dr. Phil either really and i don't generally watch Jerry Springer, although i do catch his show at times when i visit people and such, if i had my choice i would change channels, but i am glad i could bring these two examples to light to try to explain what i mean.
