just skimming over some of the replies in this thread, shaking my head and almost dumbstruck at the fact that there are people living in "modern" western society, in the year 2007, who don't see the "big deal" in a white man on a national media forum referring to a group of accomplished, bright, young african-american women (who had to struggle mightily to achieve their current success, btw) as "nappy headed hos." wow. just wow.

I would just like to add that no person regardless of skin color, artistic expression,  or gender has the right to publically d (hopefully privately as well) degrade anyone by using racial or sexist slurs.  The fact that he was white and most of the players were African American is not the issue  He was wrong to defame ALL of the girls.  My problem is not saying that Imus was wrong because he was, but it is the double standard that does not apply to all people.  All people should respect all people including people inside or outside of his/her own gender or race.  Once people start isolating who can say what.....that is when the true racism is enforced and hate is spread by example of the media. I agree that "freedom of speech" is not an excuse for bad behavior. We all should be accountable on what we say to publically defame someone...There are many people who are guilty of this offense. .Pop culture and the boundary lines are blurred to the upcoming generation which, to me, is the major problem.

nothing new there - heard a teacher in private saying that to another teacher at my oldest UM's school. so i wouldn't be shocked if she came home and repeated the racist remarks made by her 8th grade teachers (oh btw she's attends a predominantly white school in a white neighborhood). better yet, i can go one step further down - i too have been on the receiving end of racial comments made by my teachers (again i attended a predominantly white schools all my life) as well as the students. did it affect me ...was i emotionally damaged? perhaps but i have thicker skin than the other Black students who attended the same schools because i knew that certain people ignorant in their perception of others.

Not everyone will have the ability to not internalize these kinds of remarks like you did.  i am sure your thick skin has helped you in life to be the woman you are today, but no one should have to suffer such indignities when they attend a public or private school.

my point is - what you might see as a racial slur by the one and only founder of the shock jock radio i see as a double standard screamed as racism by our so-called Black leaders. so my question back to you - is it okay for us Blacks call another within our own race a "knappy-headed ho" and then condemn a White radio personality when he uses the same term?  better yet, if the tables were turned and a Black shock jock called a group of Hispanic basketball players "a bunch of Mexican frijole burrito eating wetbacks",  would there be the same media and protest outrage like Don Imus'?  would Sharpton and/or Jackson rush to the guy's assistance or leave him hanging for the slaughter?

i grew up in a very culturally/racially diverse neighborhood, most of my friends were hispanic, black and a few asians. i was the only white girl in my group of friends (not in school).  i heard blacks call their friends the n word... it perplexed me but i came to understand that it was a part of their culture and said as a term of endearment not a racial slur. Outside of the word cracker, there really isn't a deragotary word to call white people... and what a silly term, white people just don't use it on each other because there is no history attached to it, not like the history attached to the n word - perhaps it is a way of processing their history with such a hateful word, i don't know?   i do know if i said it, even just trying to be part of the crowd, it definately would not have been appreciated - you tell me why?  It's not a double standard, it's something much deeper.  i can call my sister a bitch (in a fight) but if anyone else called her that, she'd prolly take more offense - why - because we have a common history together as sisters.

Sharpton and Jackson got what they wanted - blowing this thing into an international media frenzy saying the Black community was offended. HA! they shouldn't speak after firing racial comments themselves. i don't see them being outraged over the video seen around the world and net - the beating of a White bartender by a White police officer only because it doesn't affect the Black community here. isn't that a much more worthy cause to get outraged over than a radio personality uttering a few words?

If they make racial slurs and then condem others for doing it they are hippocrits for sure. i am no fan of either of them. Sharpton lost all credability he might have had after the cover up in the Tawan Brawley case.  i am sure they used this to further their own agendas. It would have been interesting to see how this would have been played out if they both were totally out of the picture.  i for one am glad Imus is gone - i can't stand Howard Stern either - he degrades everyone [:'(]  i never listened to either of them - i wouldn't lower myself to their level by listening to them - they have nothing to offer.  Same with Jerry Springer - he exploits ignorant people for ratings.  i don't care what brings them all down i will just be happy when they are all gone.

Imus may or may not have the right to speak as he did.  i am not up on what constitutes "fighting words" and other exceptions to the 1st Amendment Guarantee of Free Speech.

CBS, however, had every right to fire Imus and remove him from their radio and tv airwaves.  Presumably CBS did so to maximize profits, like any corporation.  In this instance it was likely CBS acted to minimise damage to the company.

N/no O/one has a constitutional right to speak in a public forum such as radio or tv.  O/one must attract an employer by dint of talent and other attributes.  Imus showed his ass and thereby lost it.  Seems simple enough to me.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/14/2007 3:22:01 PM)

but that's the problem, velvetears, for every shock jock and outrageous talk show host like Jerry Springer you ban, a new breed is being created for eager radio/television mindbots especially on internet radio like where i work, Fearless Radio, where the FCC rules don't apply to us. i have heard many racial slurs on the shows ...making fun of everyone celeb as well as average joes in the papers for the purpose of entertainment. should i be offended if one of my bosses calls me a "knappy headed ho"? i would laugh because that's a white liberal or the hot italian stallion joking around in the office. the bosses even challenge Sharpton and Jackson to come here and protest us - oh yeah we're that starved for media attention and dollars.

also to add, what Don Imus said on air, he has been doing for the last 38yrs before the likes of Howard Stern and Mancow (local shock jock here in Chicago) were ever heard of. so why should this one statement be any different than the many others he has uttered for decades?

Just because he's been doing it for 38 yrs doesn't make it ok.  i would hope if these men, and i use this term very tentatively, were to go away perhaps *gasp* they would be replaced with someone of quality who will inspire people, enlighten people and not just opt to shock, degrade and denegrate others for sport and profit.  We need to change as a society and set standards for our youth, not raise them in a culture where anything goes is the norm. Where will they learn where the line in the sand should be drawn, if there is no line in the sand??

i think when shows rely on these tactics for entertainment, it's because they have nothing of value to offer us.  One example i can think of to demonstrate: Jerry Springer had the KKK on his show - all he did was stand in the aisle with his microphone and encourage them to spout their hate and fight.  What purpose did it serve?  i would not want my teenager to watch that garbage. On the other hand Dr. Phil had a series of shows where he put a group of people together to live for a short time and each one held a prejudice. For instance a white man who hated blacks and a black woman who hated whites, a lesbian who hated hetero's and a hetero girl who hated lesbians, a really overweight guy who hated skinny girls and a very thin girl who hated fat people. In the beginning the hatred and anger being exchanged was incredible, but Dr Phil gave them tasks and engaged them in dialogue and by the end of the series everyone learned something from their experience and walked away a changed individual - you understood why those people held onto the prejudices they had, and to see the process of change happening was a wonderful thing. i am not fan of Dr. Phil either really and i don't generally watch Jerry Springer, although i do catch his show at times when i visit people and such, if i had my choice i would change channels, but i am glad i could bring these two examples to light to try to explain what i mean.
