ORIGINAL: devoT But anyway, what I really wanted to post about was the idea of name changing, specifically the husband taking the wife's surname at marriage. I don't know what the laws are like in the US about this, but here in the UK it is only tradition for a woman to take the man's name, not law. So there is nothing stopping such an action at all. In fact, we actually considered me taking my wife's name, and the only thing that stopped us was the fact that i'd already changed my name legally a couple of years prior (I was adopted, and then I found my real father: I took his name), and the sheer bloody hassle of doing it all over again was too much to bear. I'm sure one of our more knowledgeable members may know the answer to this. Although I don't know why it couldn't be simply just recognized legally as a woman's is when she's married. There's no formal procedure that is done aside from the wedding certificate and having her Driver's license changed to reflect her taking on the new name. I don't know why the male wife couldn't do so as well or even have both of them hyphenate their combined names with Her's coming first. Professionally he could still use his surname if he wished to. Professional women do this all the time as well rather than change everything to reflect the married surname. One of my friends is a Physician. Professionally she still goes by Dr. Smith and for everything else she goes by Dr. Jones-Smith.
