Your idea of dedicated submissive friendship (I really like the phrase) sounds like a role I've been comfortable in before.  Its a warm caring intimate relationship without having to be romantic in any recognizable sense.  Its almost like being a little sister, because the aysymetry of D/s is there but its not a strong power/authority transfer.  The hiearchy is flattened a bit but is still perceptable.

I have had a long time friend like this but I've found that I need more bd/sm stuff to really feed me.

Holy Crap.. this is really thought provoking thread for me.  It's made me stop, think and realize a few more things.  I never really looked at or viewed groupies as being submissives or an entourage as being the same.

I think the energies that inform D/s are present in a lot of areas outside the lifestyle.

I've never actually been a groupie by any stretch of the imagination, but I saw a "documentary" on Poison once and was absolutely intrigued by some of the rituals between female fans and the band.  I'm way way way more conservative than that but could certainly identify with why the women might want to engage in those rituals.

I have worked for a local presidential campaign, and the same thing happens without the sexual overtones.  The one candidate I worked for had a right hand man sort of guy and an entourage.  I really got a kick of watching the right hand man and wanted to be him not to get close to the candidate, who I wasn't that impressed with, but  because he had such a cool behind the scenes job.

The few groupies I've met have all got one thing in common and that was not to be backstage and admire and support. They were in it to get their own 15 minutes of fame. They were in it to be able to put something on their "CV" so to speak. Based on that I wouldn't categorize what you described to being a groupie.

Professionally, my C.V. is full of experience I've gotten behind the scenes.   That kind of experience just kind of acculmulates without me having to do anything except be available.  It aggravates me because on paper, I present a very strong profile that doesn't really match who I am or who I want to be so I look like an "underachiever."

It's tough to get at the "motives" behind a groupie's behavior.  Certainly, some of them want to benefit from trickle down fame.  But, I'm sure there's a place for those who just like the role/position for its own sake and not because of any extrinsic rewards.  I'm thinking of the idea of just basking in another's glow.

The good news is that it isn't just a gay male or gay female thing. There are lots of straight Doms (Men and Women) who are into High or Medium Protocol... they love the structure and discipline of it, especially in public venues. They will feel truly blessed to find you. I suspect that like them, you just like protocol.

I do like protocol, and am much more comfortable in situations with a clearly defined structure and protocols for moving within that structure.  I haven't been successful in finding partners with a complimentary interest, but its good to know they're out there.  I do think the style of bd/sm that emphasizes protocols and rituals gets something of a bad rap as being cliqued.
