I will keep working as a longshoreman.  I simply feel the need to finish my Masters and probably go get a PhD in something.

Status: offline 		i did it and regret it.  i feel  you need to look at why you want to change careers.  You might also suffer a change in wages that might not be in the right direction.  i wish you well!!

Status: offline 		      Susan, I can honestly say that offering to work for free would never have occurred to me.   I've started at minimum wage a couple times, but only for a shift or two.

Sinergy, I know a lady who works in the statehouse in Boston, Mass and she has two Master's degrees.
I asked her why and she said that she was told that if she had a PhD she'd be pricing herself out of the market.
Isn't this "Global Economy" great?

I am not going back to school to get a degree to get a better job.  I make plenty of money right now at a job I dont have to have my brain turned on to do.

I am going back to school to learn new stuff.  I might go be a visiting professor somewhere, but when I got pulled into the union I burned my resumes.

am in the process of changing careers.  Don't quit until you
have something else solid, unless you have substantial
savings and don't give a damn what job it is so long as it
is not the current one.
 
Updating resumes, learning new skills, making new contacts,
getting a new ward-robe and outlook are all positive steps.

        I bought my 'top of the line, so fast you won't believe it,' 386 from a guy with two MS degrees (chemical and electrical engineering) who sold computers out of his garage because Dow etc. didn't recognize his genius.  And no, his business never grew out of the garage.

Status: offline 		I had always done fairly boring secretarial and PA work but changed all that to become a horse trainer. I went from not wanting to get up in the morning to feeling like it was my birthday every day of the week.
I always believe that if you want something enough in life then it will come towards you but the moment you start to put hurdles in your way then your dreams will forever move away from you.

Two years ago my partner had a new fetish/BDSM club on the drawing board. We knew the huge risks involved because there’s a lot of fet clubs in London  but even with those in mind we decided to go ahead and launch the club. In its first year it won ‘Best club in London’ and ‘Best up and coming new club in England’ we still hold that award and we are going from strength to strength.
If we had allowed any of those huge hurdles to get in our way then we would never of gone ahead. All new venture has an element of risk but it’s the risk that often drives one to succeed.

Sinergy, "most" people get a degree because of it's earning power or implied earning power.
You don't need a degree to persue knowledge.

People who like knowing things are not very well regarded in the USA. I think some people fear those with a lot of degrees, other people just do not understand them, still others think that a person's worth can only be measured by the dollar amount on their portfolio. It is very sad that celebrities, athletes, and musicians are all better regarded, get more respect, and make gobs more money than teachers do. It shows where our priorities in this country are too. Unless someone makes a gob of money what they do just does not count.
