subsfaith -> Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 6:00:49 AM)

  As a masochist, I have, through years of reading forums akin to this, read that pain cannot be used as an effective punishment on a masochist.  I have given this great thought and still cannot understand why anyone would make such a claim.

In my masochistic world, living with my sadist Sir, it is completely untrue.  There are so many differing types of pain, for example toothache.  As a masochist, should I enjoy toothache?  Of course not, it seems a ridiculous idea to even suggest such a notion, just as one wouldn’t expect to orgasm every time you stubbed your toe.

However, even though I am a masochist, there have been a few occasions when I have not enjoyed the pain given to me.  The most memorable have been pain punishments.  One immediately springs to mind, presenting myself at the end of the bed on the hour and half hour for about 15 minutes caning from cold until he saw fit to cease.  This went on for about 6 hours before he let me sleep, albeit with an instruction that upon waking I was to present myself for more of the same. Initially it was thrilling to be part of the dynamic, to enjoy his dominance and revel in my submission, bask in the pain, however four hours in it was not a pain, or an experience I enjoyed at all (and yes I learnt my lesson and the infraction has never been repeated LOL).

One could liken pain to another pleasure, orgasm for example.  Something else I thoroughly enjoy, however there have also been occasions where that has been used against me (try being set a target of six or seven orgasms in a day when you normally have only one).  Or something in the vanilla world, say alcohol, I enjoy it right up to the point where I have had enough, after that it makes me sick.  Both are good examples of both painful and mentally stressful situations.

In conclusion, for me, enjoyment comes several things, one of which is the right amount for each individual, but I do believe that everyone, even masochist, have a point where enough is enough, at which time pain is an effective punishment.

Now that is my point of view, and I am specifically looking for the thoughts and perspectives of other masochists.

And for those who don’t agree with pain infliction, find a stick and come and beat me with it :: grins ::

i always have had a rather high threshold for pain, which i knew from a younger age, and now that i have dived into this world, i find it even more pleasurable.  So punishing me with pain isn’t the ideal punishment, but He does find different kids of pain that I am uncomfortable with, which he uses as punishment, but then after using it once or twice, i channel it to be very pleasurable, and then He has to find new ways.  So often, my punishment is more psychological, than physical because of this.

Casie -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 7:36:36 AM)

I agree, I'm a masochist and pain can be used very effectivly as a punishment for me. Like you said there is a point where it is no longer pleasureable. And for me even being a masochist I don't really have a high pain tolerence, I'm a bit of a whimp. Luckily Andy knows exacally where that line is (and he should after4.5 yrs lol). He knows exacally how much pain I find pleasureable and uses that to his advange. But I think even when inflicting a punishment through pain there is also something very mental about it. The mind set for me is night and day when it come to having pain inflicted as something sexual or a release vs punishment

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 7:37:30 AM)

One of the biggest myths of bdsm is that you can't use pain to punish a masochist- of course you can.

Punishment is in the MINDSET, not the action.  If they know it's a punishment, and are internalizing it as such, then it will be a punishment.

If they don't internalize it, then it doesn't matter if they are a masochist or not, no amount of impact will turn it into a punishment.

  hello,
WOW!!!!!
just reading this gave me shivers up my spine.
i am a masochist as well ,and yes there are certain types of pain that i dont enjoy. my Master knows this and has taken the time to find out which "tools" i like and which i dont like.  the ones that i dont like are reserved for punishment. as of yet he has not caned me past learning that i dont like the feel of a cane. " sigh of relief".  also when being punished it is not all about the pain that is being inflicted, it also about knowing that i have displeased him enough to warrent a punishment, which makes it also a psychological thing as well.
so physical punishment does work on a masochist, it is just up to the master/ dom/domme to find out what their slaves/subs like and dont like, and then using that as a punishment.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 11:56:43 AM)

I have certain types of pain I do not enjoy also. For me though physcial punishment does not work for me no matter what it is. Thats just me. So Master uses other things for punishment. Yes there are alot of forms of pain and not all pleasurable. In my case the physical punishment would still not be a deterent. Everyone is different and punishments that work are different for everyone, even a masochist.

Viridana -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 12:00:53 PM)

I am a masochist and for me using pain doesn't work effectively as a punishment. Punishment doesn't have to be physical, just something that you really hate to do.

slavegirljoy -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 1:32:47 PM)

The worst punishment ever used on me was when my Master wouldn't allow me to serve Him in any way for 3 days.  i wasn't allowed to make His bed or get His newspaper for Him or make His coffee or fix Him anything to eat or anything.  What made it even more painful for me was knowing that my Master wasn't getting any pleasure from it.  When He whips me, even if it is to punish me, He is getting pleasure from it.  This punishment gave Him no pleasure, at all.

A lot of people might have considered those 3 days to be a vacation, not a punishment.  But for me, it was the longest 3 days of my life and far worse than any whipping or other type of physical punishment used on me.

For me, it's not so much what form the punishment takes, but knowing that my Master feels the need to punish me at all, that makes it hurt.  The disappointment i see in my Master's eyes and the shame i feel about the behavior that caused the punishment is far more painful than any physical "abuse" i have ever been subjected to.

There is also a big difference between punishment and discipline.  A whipping for my punishment doesn't feel the same to me as a whipping for my training and discipline feels.

Most people know the difference between play and punishment. However if you use an implement for punishment you run the risk of the s not being able to tolerate that implement for play.

littleone35 -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/18/2007 5:49:57 PM)

I don't take pain well (i take it if i hav earned it) And i have had only one punishment ing the 14 months we have been together he used the strap.  For displine he uses his hand.  Since i don't like pain to begin with that reduced me to sobbing.  So from the other side of the coin pain is a very effective punishment for me.  As slavegirl joy said not being able to serve him would be horrible.  I don't think my Master would do that however he always said that would be punishing him as well.

Yes i agree that for a masochist as myself there is always a level beyond which it really becomes 'pain' for punishment sake and very unpleasant--- its just up to the Mistress/Master to become facile in executing to that level and form, and yes with the different punishment mindset.

Jasmyn -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/19/2007 10:23:26 AM)

As LA said, unable to physically punish a maschist or pain slut, will go down in history as one of the great myths of our times.

leili -> RE: Pain as a punishment, but I am a masochist….? (4/19/2007 12:46:56 PM)

i personally think there are two different ways you can beat/whip someone.  you can beat them for fun, you know, have a beating and have fun with it.  that's not a punishment.  but i see it as if you beat them out of anger/wrath, then that is a punishment.  i dunno, maybe just my opinion, but that is the way i see it.  and i don't really care for much pain.  some light pain, but anything harsh is too much for me.

Pleasurable pain can be earnt.  If i get a good thrashing it can be because I have been exceptionally good, or exceptionally bad, and just sometimes I get one because I have asked for one :: smiles ::

Since I like pain, I too can be reduced to sobbing.... I don't think having a preference is relevant at all.

But thank you for your comments, it is good to hear about it from a less favourable viewpoint.

There have been several examples of psychological punishments, and I concur, they can be extremely punishing.  The most basest of punishments for me is denial.  denial of anything from having a biscuit with my mid-morning coffee, or denial of his physical touch.

I am pleased that generally I don't earn punishments, and i would never invite one willfully :: smiles ::

My Sir, being the BEST bastard, has found the most effective punishment is the cane on the back of the legs.  There are times he does this for his pleasure of course, but that is again very different to punishment.

TIP: Try not to piss Master off enough to cane you on the back of the legs... hurts like billy-o!

slavegirljoy,
Thank you for sharing that with us.  Never having been denied that specifically I cannot fully comprehend how that would feel, but I do get a sickening feeling when i think about it.

As I have said previously, denial for me, is one of the most detested forms of punishment,all the time knowing that you have displeased.  Complete torture!

Be well

Out of all the replies this is the one that concerns me the most.

The difference between a pleasure pain, and a punishment pain is self evident for most who play with pain.  However being beaten out of anger/wrath? No!  Quite emphatically, this should never been done!

In a power exchange relationship one person has the power, one person submits thier power.  For the one in control to LOSE CONTROL steps into another field complete, one of ABUSE.

If one cannot control oneself, one should not be attempting to control another.

It is quite simple, if a person is claiming to be a dom/me, or Sir, or Master, or whatever otehr title them give themselves, they lose all status the minute they cannot control themselves.

Besides anything it is as dangerous as hell!  My Sir is responsible for my safety during any act of his dominance, if I cannot trust him to NOT be fuelled by his emotions then he is no Master of mine, nor is he fit for the job.

So we have a third category, beating for fun, beating for punishment and beating out of a lack of self control.

Food for thought...... :: smiles ::

For you perhaps.  There are plenty of people who can play in anger and still be controlled.
