These people are truly nutcases, Imo, and are hiding above and beyond the laws. Untill now. One of the families of the soldiers, that these people have protested had filed a lawsuit againt Westboro Baptist Church and they won. the family didnt get much monitarily but it is the start of taking the wind out of Fred Phelps sails. http://www.kake.com/home/headlines/4892916.html?source=enews&c=y     As well as, last year. My local talk radio was talking about these people and they stated that the Baptist church Organization do not reconize Westboro Baptist as any bapist church. But I would almost bet that whom ever offs these people. The courts would have a hard time finding a jury that would send the killer to prison.

Well, I dont know if this will help you, SusanofO, but I wanted to point out that one of the guiding principles of my life and willingness to respond to people I have a distaste for is summed up in the following statement.

"It is better to be hated than ignored."

He is an asshole for doing this.  But his approach is to capitalize on the tragedies of other people in order to further his "in her face" approach to spreading his bile.

Doing anything which shows you are paying attention to his bile is giving him what he wants.  Simply gazing at him indifferently and turning the other way is the purest form of hostility to those of his ilk.

Just me, etc.

Mac37180: I am really glad someone finally won a lawsuit against him. Gred and many members of his family (which is mostly waht the membership f his church consists of, his extended family) are lawayers, and so far, this really has managed to intimidate people from suiing him. Glad it succeeded. I am not in any way surprised the real Baptist church has said they are in n way connected with this guy - if they were, I'd realy wonder about them. Thanks for the link.

Sinergy: I know you are absolutely right. Mostly, I do ignore these types. I think the basic reason I get riled about this is because my next door neighbors are very activist lesbians and we yak a lot. They absolutely cannot stand Fred or his "cuhrch", and they keep me up-to-date on his latest insane escapades. I appreciate the thoughtful advice. How could any sane person take him seriously?

I have had not very favorable  encounters with Jesus people, maybe its just me but the hypocrisy just gets too thick and I have noticed ZERO difference in their behavior compared to so-called "unsaved" people.
If they lived what they preached it would be fine but they, in general don't.
Why anyone would picket the funerals of these slain VT folks is beyond comprehension. Sickos.
Freedom of assembly, freedom of speech is a  principle that takes real courage to support in some instances, but support it we must for a free and open society.

Jack45: I think you're right, even if it turns my stomach to give this guy an open podium. Actually, all he is doing is convincing more of a majority of folks he and his followers are really nuts, IMO, although I suppose occasionally, he gets new recruits via his weird tactics.

Susan,

While I am intellectually convinced that Sinergy is correct.  I think
it would be much more fun to contact the Gay Men's Chorus in the
nearest metropolitan area.  And then provide them with the a sound
system and all the appropriate permits so they could be near this
group, drowning them out by singing hymns.

I know one member of the local Gay Men's Chorus here in LA.
He is a six foot four ex marine.  I am sure he would volunteer.

Please dont get me wrong, this is the sort of thing I would not only set up but I would wear tasteful clothes and go sing in the choir with them.

Mostly just to see the look of horror and revulsion on their narrow minded faces.

I think you all ought to set up a fund and encourage them to come to RAF Lyneham to protest when British soldiers are brought back draped in a flag.

That way, they could all be arrested, charged and imprisoned under our laws - free speech within the confines of not generating hatred.

Being US qualified in law, they'd be well out of their depth with our laws, and possibly bankrupted by the fees of the British lawyers they'd have to hire.
