My own long-haired, yellow-eyed lapcat, who is otherwise the most docile little ball of fluff you're ever going to see, spent about two weeks hissing at our two more recent adoptions before learning to share space with them. They've just got to work it out among themselves...

Cat Update.

After a few days of observation, it appears that the source of new kitty's hostility is plain jealousy. She'll approach me as soon as I pay any attention to my other baby, and tries to rush her off.

It makes total sense considering where they were both brought up. My first was raised in a totally different shelter, with plenty of open space for the cats to run around and interact with each other. New cat was raised where she got more one on one affection from people. In other words, she's a diva. ;)

I'll give my alpha cat credit, though. She's older, stronger, and has her claws. She spends a ton of time outside, too. So she could beat Gypsy's ass if she were so inclined. Her reaction so far is to just walk away and shrug her shoulders, so to speak, lol

Good deal. When i got my last kitten, my older cats stalked her. Everyone now is family and friends with some minor issues every now and then. Eventually your two will get along...... or agree to disagree and keep their space.

When i was younger, my mother and i got two cats from a shelter. One that was 8 years old and a kitten. Those two never really got along, but they learned to co exist. Can you imagine a wee baby kitten trying to play with a sedate older cat........ and then that wee baby kitten growing up and antagonizing the older cat just COS. LOL

It's best to introduce two cats SLOWLY together. Personally, I think you should stick one in an enclosed room for at least a week, without any contact with the other cat.

It gives the new resident time to get used to its new environment without feeling threatened, time for the cats to become adjusted to new smells and curious to eachother.

When you introduce them formally, open the door and see what happens. Do not allow one cat to bully the other and spray them with a water bottle when they physically attack, but hissing, spitting, puffing up and general signs of aggression are normal and just something to observe.

After an hour, separate them again. Then repeat over the next few days. Hopefully by then they've gotten used to eachother enough to be allowed without direct supervision all the time.

Give them each a nice ball of duct tape with the sticky side out to play with.

They will not even notice the other cat.
