I am considered a tree hugger by many, and I do like Sheryl Crow.  While I can appreciate her concern, one square is a bit absurd, and I would not want the toilet paper police breaking down my door.  The concept is silly, BUT in her defense... there are likely thousands of people around the world who may heed her advice for life, and perhaps many thousands of trees may be saved thanks to her words.  Her thoughts were harmless to all of us, and may even help our trees as a result.  Go Sheryl!

I suggest buying bathroom tissue made with recycled paper... (No,  it's not recycled (used) toilet paper).

one solution is to stop the chem tht make it white. its natural color is brown.  canada pointed out how toxic that is to our lakes etc. why must it be white? i would be for unbleached toilet paper- paper plates, tissue, paper towels, you name it.

each toilet paper square represents 1 serving. sorta like sncks.

consdier this. i am 43 - i see what i throw out. over my lifetime- im sure it is a fotball field of waaste. now- x that by 300 million.

there is a tipping point where stuff enslaves u. it doesnt set u free.

say there is a 911 this minute. you havr 5 minutes to grab ur junk and evacate 500 miles- and will never return to your home. what would u grab?

Dint work.

selfbnd411 -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 10:25:20 AM)

Um....am I the only one who noticed that this is a tongue in cheek/socially pointed joke along the lines of A Modest Proposal, or the University of Flinders philosophy paper advocating the return of slavery for the poor?  She also advocated washing out the square!  This was just a silly remark she made to get people talking about conservation.  And it worked, because we are all talking about it.  It was never a serious proposal, but it seems that most of the internets took it that way!

Lighten up people!

It's idiocy like this that have sent me screaming in the opposite direction from the greens. I despise the deforestation that goes on in my country, but for the right reasons: because of the wildlife and natural spaces displaced and destroyed so we can have another crappy subdivision. I will be the first to admit that the ecosystems threatened are a treasure trove of potential medicines and knowledge for the benefit of humanity, but this air argument is pure horseshit.

Trees are responsible for producing the earth's oxygen about as much as Rosie O' Donnell's punch bowl of a head is responsible for keeping the moon orbiting around the earth: Both are significant enough to have an effect, but they are by no means the key ingredient. It's the phytoplankton that dwells on the surface of the ocean, which covers over 70% of the earth that's worth worrying about. That's our bread and butter.

Love the post, Pulpsmack.  Missed that particular interpretation of gravity in Physics class, but I can see your point.

On a related note, I have been pondering trying to get people to start replanting trees over most of the southwest that was denuded thousands of years ago by the Anasazi.  Sort of a United States "Green Belt" approach to solving global warming.

We could try eating less, thus pooping less. ;)

What does sheryl crow do when she gets diahrrea?

windchymes -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 1:53:22 PM)

Remember the Seinfeld episode where Elaine gets stuck in the bathroom with no toilet paper and asks the woman in the next stall if she can "spare a square"? [:D]

"I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming. Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. One of my favorites is in the area of forest conservation which we heavily rely on for oxygen. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required."

Sorry but my 200lb ass needs a hell of a lot more than 1 square to clean it! Heck I couldn't clean up after URINATING with 1 square, let alone after a bowel movement!

Crush -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 2:05:38 PM)

So,
I guess we should set up a website so people can buy "TP Offsets"  by the roll?

Mercnbeth -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 2:08:18 PM)

Another "shut up and sing" moment. Hey - but she had "good intent" and that's all that matters.

I guess she using the Messianic voice of Albert Gore as a, I am too big and important to follow my own rules, role model

I'm sure she's purchased her carbon offsets. If not we can all buy her some from here: http://www.celebritycarbonoffset.com/

She should stick to having some fun..."Until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard.".

popeye1250 -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 2:49:12 PM)

I don't even know who she is and already I don't like her!
Is this like the "carbon footprint" thing?

Popeye,
No, I don't think that was what she had in mind. While identifying the importance of toilet paper's impact on global warming she forgot to consider her entourage.

The link didn't show properly, try this one: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/backstagetour/scrow/scrow1.html

Based on this source perhaps Sheryl's mind was a bit foggy. Depending upon what day of the week it was maybe she was influenced. Monday is Makers Mark Bourbon - Tuesday Bombay Gin & Tonic - Wednesday Couvosier - Thursday is Champagne Day! - Fridays of course Tequila for Margarita's - Vodka & OJ for Saturday - and Sunday is upscale Silver Tequila as either a Margarita or with OJ for some 'Sunrise'.  These, day contingent requirements, are in addition to the daily requirement of 12 Groisch beers, 6 local brews, a "good" Australian Cabernet and a "good" Merot.

After awhile alcohol turns the urine clear so maybe she employs the shake it method and dappling one square works. Or, maybe she's has a "roadie" who's into the water-sports aspect of the lifestyle and then would only need one square after he/she is finished?

Hey - here's an idea for a positive image of the lifestyle.
Fight Global Warming - Support Water-sports!

popeye1250 -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 3:49:15 PM)

Merc, nice! Three trailor trucks, 4 busses and 6 cars she uses on tour and she wants people to use "1 square" of toilet paper?
What an ASSHOLE!!!
The next time I take a dump I'm going to wrap the shit paper around my hand like a fuckin' GLOVE!
And I'll use my right hand just to insult the muslims too!

Zensee -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 5:18:37 PM)

Well I have looked high and low but I can't find the source for this report. All the articles refer to other articles which refer to previously referred to articles but none of them link to the alleged blog entry. Does anyone have such a link? Nothing in snopes yet.

In any case I tend to agree with selfbnd411 on this one - if Crow actually said this it was a tongue in cheek comment and not a serious proposal (people need to start taking their irony supplements again).

Zensee, you're in Canada, correct?
It'll probably be in the news there in 3 or 4 days. Keep a lookout for it.

Oh, she's a *SINGER.*
Sure, like I'm going to take the advice of a *SINGER!* lol
Hey, someone should market "Sheryl Crow Shitpaper".
You pull off  "one"  6 foot long page at a time!
Someone should toilet paper her tour busses!

littleonyx -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 5:29:04 PM)

Actually...I'd still like to know about fluffier bottoms and littler bottoms. [:)]

farglebargle -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 5:33:37 PM)

What kind of illiterate fool could take a blog entry which contained THIS:

"My request for the June Taylor Dancers was denied, however"

even somewhat seriously.

Sheryl GOT all of the people who fell for this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sheryl-crow/laurie-and-sheryl-go-to-s_b_46320.html

Suckers!

Zensee -> RE: Sheryl Crow: Limit toiler paper to 1 square per sitting (4/23/2007 5:45:04 PM)

Popeye - I know who Sheryl Crow is, thanks and we get the internet in Canada on the same day that the USA does.

My point is none of the reports on blog actually links to the source material. That's shoddy reporting. Where is it? I'm still looking for the blog entry itself.

And what's with all the whinging about her entourage? Guess what - no band walks to its gigs. So the tour consumes some booze, that's a crime all of a sudden? Anyone here have a drink or two on any given day or offer one to guests? Anyone here like live concerts? How about movies? They all use resources. You buy tickets you contribute, so quit yer bitching.

Z.
