If this has been discussed adnauseum, feel free to direct Me to threads or posts, but I am curious about the naming of your sub(s)--what criteria do you use, how do you select them--do they stay when the sub leaves you? Subs--how did you get your name? does it reflect this side of you? and how many times do Y/you slip and use it in public?

I got my first name from my mom when I was born. I changed my name in high school and have gone by my middle name ever since.
I have 'pet names' like "baby", "baby girl", "my bunny", "my kitty" or that typical "sweetie" and "honey." I don't have a specific name, It changes depending on his mood. And those nicknames are that uncommon to be heard in the vanilla world so he calls me them all the time. They are more terms of affection.

Edited because I can't type in the morning

Master has felt no need to change my name. He either refers to me simply as "slave" or by the name given to me by my parents.

I call my subs by their birth or chosen name. Otherwise, "boy" & "girl" are often used.

During humiliation scenes, the names can vary based on a particular sub's triggers.

Then, I have little affectionate pet names I give each individually.

Master has seen fit to give me the name 'river'. Granted, it came originally from my own chosen CM user name, but He decided it fit me fine. Slips in public with the name? i wouldn't call them slips...He just uses it as He sees fit. In the home, in public, whatever...but He also calls me by my given name, or 'honey' 'sweetie', 'sweetheart', 'girl' and other various less "vanilla" names as well...depending on His mood and the tenor of the given moment. 'river' He has called me in front of my children and in public...and its no big deal...many people out in the world have other 'names' they go by. i have an uncle who's name is Dave who goes by the name "Robin"...because he's always his best friend's side-kick. i suppose i've run off on a tangent...lol....so i'll end now...*grinz

What you are called in public is really what you and your master feel comfy with, where sweetie, honey ,precious, princese, dear, love are all "acceptable" in the public eyes, other names may not. I perfer to speak to anyone with their birthname,as oppossed to a nickname, even if the person goes by a nickname. There is always "pet" names, that are reserved, but do occasionally slip out, however some of cousre in a vanilla world setting may offend others. At dinner in public, you may turn a head or two with"slave" "slut" or other names. My sub I call her "pet",and I use it in the possive form in public sometimes. What is interesting is that if I say "My Pet" and others in a public place respond with a look....As if they have heard that before spoken to them.......It really is a choice after all as to what you are called in play or in public and the distincation between the two areas....

I usually refer to subs by their first name or a term of endearment, their puppy name( if we do puppy play) is given to them and usually has a story behind it.

~Angel~ is a name that I have been given as a nick from teenage years. It 'kind of' altered because to my hair colour change...lol...

Demon calls me Angel, or my real name on however He sees fit. Most people call me Angel, family call me by my real name.

It was just an evolution...

These are the related threads i found, but they don't directly address your question.

how did you decide on a bdsm name

how did you decide on your screen name

what name do you use at gatherings?

I have had boys ask Me about a new name. For some this seems very important. I am told it is an indication of a rebirth. But I don't do it. I think a given name is just fine. "slave" or "boy" also works well, and if it is really necessary to him, I can use something from a favorite screen identity (providing it's appropriate!) or let him choose something which I will approve.

We have never renamed a sub/slave, I liken it to a similar situation as getting a pet (the 4 legged kind), they are used to their given name, or nickname, so I don't see why it would be necessary to rename them unless their given name was offensive in some way. But again, that would be a "to each their own" preference I would have to assume. If the Dominant wished to rename their sub/slave and it was a joint decision, I don't see a problem with it either.

I haven't been given a new name. Fangs refers to me as pet, but that's more a label than a name. Usually he just uses my name, and I use his.

This is an interesting subject. When my Master introduced me to the lifestyle, He told me to think about a name to use. My name has many meanings to me. I love the musical Cats, and the character of Grizzabella. When I joined another website, I used bellaglamkitty. Most everyone got the reference to Grizzabella and Cats.

When I chose my name, I shortened it to just "bella" or subbella. My Master will either use my given name, bella, baby or baby girl. Sometimes he also will call me kitten. It depends on his mood. He loves the name, and when I shared it with Him, He said it fits my personality perfectly!

I am also an artist, and have chosen to use the name bella in my new artwork, and my writings. After 44 years, 20 of which were spent in a BAD marriage, it is sometimes comforting to shift identities and become someone new. I love my sub name!

bella

My girl was very new when she came to me. She had researched and explored a little and even interviewed with several who claimed to be dominants, but had yet to experience a committed D/s relationship. In order to help her make the internal adjustment, I named her playtoy. Being addressed as 'toy' had a profound effect on her, which was the point. I wanted to assist her in disassociating herself from her unowned life without invalidating who and what she was when she came to me and the name 'toy' was perfect. It has a taste of objectification without provoking the knee-jerk reaction that 'slave' often elicits. For us, 'girl' had a completely different effect, one that was much less efficient. Of course, as in all things, know your /s because YMMV.

I wanted my submissive to have a 'slave name' so I asked him what he would like to be named.

He replied "Spartacus"

slut, baby, toy, pet, cum-guzzling road whore or bitch nugget would all seem to fall under the category of "terms of endearment" rather than "slave name"....this slave is not familiar with the practice of taking or getting another name when one submits other than in various religious connotations, marriages or Gor.

Master chose to call His slave a derivative of the name she was born with(Elizabeth), that no other friends or family members ever refer to her as....beth.

one example: Master expects this slave to refer to herself in the third person...so her "slave name" would be "this slave" to others and "Your slave" to Him.

this slave has lost count. most memorable was the look on the faces of about 15 shoppers within earshot in IKEA!

when the girl got here a year ago she requested a new name, seeing as she absolutely detests her given birth name..... she responded to "slut/slave/girl" until I came up for a suitable name for her. I looked back upon both of our Irish heritage and chose a Gaelic word for her name... cailin. (which incidentally means "girl") and its followed thru to her everyday life in public... all of her coworkers and friends, and My family call her cailin and she's a happy slut.

a rose by any other name smells like a rose. Sometimes I have given a sub a new name but only to be used by Me in addressing her. Names are like cars to Me...I care not what it is or who makes it, the question is...does it perform well?
