A question then. If being masochistic is just liking various degrees of pain, and not related to dom/sub, then why so much connection between the d/s and bdsm? I've hardly seen any doms that much appear to enjoy being on the receiving end, and there's quite the active lifestyle community here lol. Just wondering.....

Oh, lots of dominants enjoy receiving things. Many enjoy receiving oral sex and massages. Fewer enjoy receiving punches, bites, scratches, and, as WhiplashSmile pointed out, electricity.

It has been AGES since I've been on the bottom, but I still think about it a lot.  Maybe one of these days, again.

I wouldn't necessarily consider myself a masochist, but being 'broken' sounds interesting.

I don't think it's really correct to say that D and s have nothing to do with S and M. To me it's more like they tend to be related but are not insepparable.

I'm all Dom, but I've been called a switch because I do enjoy recieving sensation from time to time. For one thing I really like a good flogging from time to time. I enjoy the sensation of being tied up ocasionally but am more likely to enjoy breakling free as a challenge rather then actually giving up power. I'd never call the one topping me "mistress" or any other such title other than friend. Additionally there is the "scientific" aspect in that I always want to know what it's like to be on the recieving end of any new type of technique or tool before employing it on someone else. Some of the older Traditions in the community actually had that as a rule... Some can understand this and others can not. On the flipside my wife cannot sepparate the two emotionally. Logically she can sepparate them but in her heart the power and the practice are insepparable. Thus I have to maintain a certain "pack leader" status and could never allow her to flog me or any such thing because such a thing will actually interfere with her submission. I never let her see me bottom, though she is quite aware. On a related note when she watches me fight (martial arts, not bar fights) it really matters when I win or lose. If I kick a lot of ass, she gets really wet and "needy" but (on the rare ocasion[;)]) I don't do so well she can't help but withdraw a bit. Of course she feels guilty for it, but there it is. So there is a link between power exchange and S vs M but the link can be very weak or very strong.

Of course there are, but I will let them speak for themselves.

Who else could tolerate, biting, scratching, physically rough and tumble sadistic submissives? :)

Dom/mes can enjoy pain, and the subs can enjoy giving it. none of this blurs the lines of D/s imho. i like nothing better than to pierce my claws into flesh, and my Mate seems pretty found of it too, though i think He finds it cute...

Are there any Masters here, who are also Masochists?

Tons. I'm not one, but I'd submit the similar case that my nephandi is a submissive sadist. [:D]

I fall under this catagory. I enjoy pain a lot, physically. Both getting and giving. I like to do both at the same time so that we can "feed" off each others energy. To each their own.

I don't see how the dom can much be on the receiving end, I was under the assumption that masochism relates more to submission, for you are surrendering control or baring your ass (or whatever)to the giver of pain. I do like to be bitten in return while sexually engaged, haven't thought of it as masochism so much as animal responses...interesting topic......to each their own tastes lol

I've found it to be a very common misconception. If you actually think about it, though, it makes no sense at all. Control and pain are entirely different things. As another poster pointed out recently in another thread, athletes are generally, probably universally, masochistic. Does that mean athletes are always submissive? Hardly.

If you enjoy being bitten you have a little maso streak. Most people do, even if they cant admit it.

I gotta say, this thread alone made today's posts worth reading. I see your point but if - prior to reading this - someone had asked me, I would have laughed and said, "Of course not!". A masochistic master.

Thanks all for opening my eyes to this hybrid. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it.

Hmmm, I'd say I dislike pain but I do spar on occasion and the folks I spar with aren't particularly gentle... but that's different? And as far as I wear a cup when we spar, they stay far away from my dangly bits! DON'T like any pain there. Had mild NSU once and that was enough!

I do NOT enjoy sharp pain but I LOVE being scratched and I enjoy it done fairly hard, especially on my back.  I enjoy being LIGHTLY bitten on my neck and upper shoulders.  The most pain I like is that of my nipples being bitten when I am really aroused and that is the only sharp pain I like.  Not bitten as hard as I might bite someone elses but hard enough a vanilla person would slap you.

And I get off ordering someone to do the above and spending lots of time training them to do it exactly how I like it.

Hybrid? Like you said, you've not your mind around it yet... no hybrid ;)

How is it different?

I, too, enjoy sparring. Very much more than would seem to be rational.

Agree, I don't like to be hurt there at all. But minor scrapes, bruises, scratches, etc whether from sparring or good sex, are both quite enjoyable to me if not excessive, and that definitely falls under the heading of masochism.
