Status: offline 		So, what have all y'all read recently?  I burn through books when traveling... a week ago it was:

1) a book by one of the shuttle astronauts (can't remember the name, I left the book in LA)
2) Bad Dirt (Wyoming Stories 3), Annie Proulx
3) Down & Out in Paris and London, George Orwell
4) Mutants: On Genetic Variety and the Human Body, Armand Leroi
5) The Master Plan:  Himmler's Scholars and the Holocaust, Heather Pringle
(needless to say, I blew my per diem on books that week)

Last week and this week I saved/will save money by re-reading the "Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R.R. Martin (he's a cool guy, you can see him at SF&F conventions)

Status: offline 		I was in the mood for something "different" and found one at the library that I'm really into.  It's called "Sea Hunter" by Paul Garrison.  In fact, I need to get back to it....

Status: offline 		i've been rereading the troy game by sara douglass...it's one of my favorite series, and has awesome character development even if the writing sometimes sucks. the name He calls me comes from that series, from one of the characters with whom i identify greatly.

other books i've read recently:
keeping a nature journal by clare walker leslie and...somebody roth
i'm working through the artist's way by julia cameron...finally. she gets on my nerves in some parts of it, but i know so many people who have been helped by it that i feel like i have to try it, at least.
eats, shoots & leaves by lynn truss
holy blood, holy grail by michael baigent and a few other people...crap, i know, but it appeals to my historical fantasy and secret society conspiracy side ;)
the ethical slut by dossie easton and catherine liszt
i'm reading neverwhere by neil gaiman to my best friend over the phone...i love that book
i also finally got around to actually reading thomas harris's hannibal books recently (hannibal rising, the red dragon, silence of the lambs, and hannibal)

i burn through books too and have read many recently.  The most recent ones i can think of are:
 
Nonfiction:
The No Asshole Rule: Building A Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't - Robert I. Sutton, PhD
Written by a Stanford professor, it's a surprisingly readable book with practical information/advice.  i really enjoyed it.

Made To Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die - Chip and Dan Heath
The title really intrigued me but i thought it was rather poorly organized and the ideas weren't expressed well.

Lone Wolf: Eric Rudolph - Murder, Myth and the Pursuit of an American Outlaw - Maryanne Vollers
A well written, interesting book on a fascinating subject.  Like the "Unabomber," Rudolph worked alone and was not part
of any organized group.  The book really draws you in.

The Murderer Next Door: Why the Mind is Designed to Kill - David M. Buss 
Very interesting premise (it's a wonder MORE of us don't kill people).  The author contends that the impulse to kill is not an aberration but has been hardwired by evolution into every human brain where it awaits certain triggers.  Yikes!  Interesting read.

Fiction:
Pig Island - Mo Hayder
Good twist ending - good potential - just never really lived up to my expectations.

The Grave Tattoo - Val McDermid
Again - ok, not one of my favorites

What The Dead Know - Laura Lippman
Very good, as are all Lippman's suspenseful novels.  i'd recommend it.
 
i much prefer nonfiction of the style above but sometimes i just need to read for fun and like a good fiction read............slave luci

Status: offline 		Huh. I just finished book 3 of RR's fire & ice. As well as Braniac by Ken Jennings, Deathstalker- Simon R green, and the Salmon of Doubt, Douglas Adams, Illuminatus! trillogy.

I am reading one in a series now called Speak no evil (wanna guess what the other 2 are called?)
Read Hannible, really good read.
Have a few new ones waiting on the trip to vegas

Love anything by Nora Roberts or Anne Rice (except her last book)

Status: offline 		Haven't read it yet, but I understand there is a bonafide new J.R.R. Tolkien novel out. The first in 30 years. Since he has been dead quite some time, I have to assume this was found amongst his mountains of notes, which his son has been culling through for years.

Status: offline 		Just found Vicki Pettersson's Zodiac series and am reading The Scent of Shadows which is the first one, and have the second one which is The Taste of Night. I have Shiver in my tbr pile and am also reading on Consensual Sadomasochism and Lynn Viehl's newest in the Darkyn series, Night Lost.

Status: offline 		Have to agree with you completely. The Cell was a pretty big disappointment to me. Granted it seems to be setting up for a next book in a series.

Just finished Brother Odd ~ Koontz. Loved it.

I tend to have 3 or 4 books going at a time. Here's my current short list of what I'm reading.

Obsessive Genius by Barbara Goldsmith (Biography of Marie Curie)

Marie Curie: A Life by Susan Quinn

Radium Girls: Women and Industrial Health Reform
by Claudia Clark

Deadly Glow: The Radium Dial Worker Tragedy
by Ross Mullner

Status: offline 		i haven't read anything especially interesting lately other than Christopher Moore's new book... which i've helpfully forgotten the title of. We acquired a pile of sci-fi books from a relative recently, and i've been plowing through them... not my favorite genre, but i've been hiding from my library fines. 

However... Kushiel's Justice (Jacqueline Carey) is due out in June *bounce* *twiddles thumbs impatiently*

The problem with GRRM is that you see him at cons WHEN HE SHOULD BE AT HOME WORKING ON HIS FREAKIN' SERIES! ARRRRGH!

Hamilton has a nice assortment. vampires, and were-critters, and faeries, oh my! and She doesn't skimp on sexual content, the cover-art can be eye-catchy so you might want a book cover or a hard-back you can take the paper-sleave off. a few years back i read a book that i think would be catagorized as; young adult, called; "Catherine called Birdie". sorry, i can't recall the author/ess. but still, it was an adorable little read about a noble's daughter determined to scare off all the suiters her father tries to bethrothe her to. i mean to purchase this book when next i find it. hope this can help- Phoenix
