What you say about social constructs is absolutely correct. Throughout the world, you find that love, sex, relationships, male/female gender roles, etc., etc., are not consistant. There are tribes where the males job is to be prestine and proper, primped and beatiful while the women are out hunting. Other tribes file their teeth, shave their head, and try to get their children's heads to be as cone shaped as possible while the skull bones are still soft enough to manipulate, all in the name of beauty. In Japan, people get married in red most of the time. In some carribean arenas, mothers don't touch their children for the first two years other than when it's absolutely necessary because they believe that getting attached is futile due to high infant mortality rates and, therefore, motherhood isn't a universal feeling.
